My grandparents believed that you were either honest or you were not. They had a simple saying hanging on their living roo m wall: “Life is like a field of newly fallen snow. Where I choos e to walk every step will show.” They didn’t have to talk about it; they showed this truth by the way they lived.
They understood that honesty is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately, honesty is in short supply today . But it is the real bottom line in every area of society and a di scipline we must demand of ourselves.
There’s a story told about a surgical(外科的)
nurse’s first day on the medical team at a well-
known hospital. She was responsible for all surgical instrume nts and materials during an operation. At the end of the opera tion, the nurse said to the doctor, “You’ve only removed 11 sp onges (纱布), and we used 12. We need to find the last one.”
“I removed them all,” the doctor assured her. “No, you didn’t,
sir,” insisted the nurse. “Think of the patient.”
Smiling, the doctor lifted his foot and showed the nurse the twelfth sponge.
So when you know you’re right, you can’t yield. Don’t be afrai d of those who might have a better idea or who might even be more intelligent than you are.
Self-
respect and a clear awareness of right and wrong are powerfu l parts of honesty and are the basis for enriching your relation ships with others. Honesty means you do what you do becaus e it’s right and not just fashionable or politically correct. A life of principle, of not easily yielding, will always take you forward . My grandparents taught me that.

Dressing against the cold is hard when you are a 6,000-pound elephant. But thanks to some generous knitters (编织者) in Mathura, India, a group of elephants have giant handso me sweaters to help them stay warm during the cold winter. When worn with their bright red leg coverings, their new outfit s look like comfortable nightclothes for them!
The huge sweaters were made for elephants at the Wildlife S OS Elephant Conversation and Care Center. It takes care of 2 0 blind, lame, or injured elephants. They were saved from abu se (虐
待). Some lived in circuses, some were brought and sold illeg ally, and some were not receiving enough care. In India, elep hants are sometimes kept in crowded inner cities and used in street performances or for begging. This causes physical and emotional harm to the wild animals. Wildlife SOS provides foo ds, care, and medical attention to those animals.
Because most of the elephants housed at the center are reco vering from injuries or are elderly, “it is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme wi nter,” explains Kartick Sayan, the co-
founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS. “They are weak and vulner able (脆弱
的), having suffered so much abuse, making it easy for them t
o catch diseases such as pneumonia. The cold also worsens t heir arthritis (关节
炎), which is a common issue that our saved elephants have t o deal with.”
At first, Wildlife SOS made giant jackets out of tarp (防水帆布) for the elephants to wear. Then they asked people in near by villages to help out by making colorful knitted sweaters. Kni tting the sweaters is a big undertaking. Each one takes about four weeks to create, with volunteers working together on the very large sweaters. Wildlife SOS hopes to save 50 more elep hants this year, which means there could be a lot more knittin
g to do!
33. What can we learn about the knitted sweaters for elephant s?
A. They are made of tarp.
B. They are all in bright red.
C. They are made entirely by hand.
D. They are designed for the elderly.
34. What do the 20 elephants who dress in huge sweaters ha ve in common?
A. They are all good at street performances.
B. They all weigh over 6,000 pounds.
C. They are all found in the wild.
D. They are all badly treated.
35. What does kartick Sayan mainly explain?
A. The current situation of elephants in India.
B. The possibility of better protecting elephants.
C. The necessity of making sweaters for elephants.
D. The reason why Wildlife SOS rescues elephants.

My grandparents believed that you were either honest or you were not. They had a simple sa ying hanging on their living room wall: “Life is like a field of newly fallen snow. Where I choos e to walk every step will show.” They didn’t have to talk about it; they showed this truth by the way they lived.
They understood that honesty is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately, h onesty is in short supply today. But it is the real bottom line in every area of society and a dis cipline we must demand of ourselves.
There’s a story told about a surgical(外科的)
nurse’s first day on the medical team at a well-
known hospital. She was responsible for all surgical instruments and materials during an ope ration. At the end of the operation, the nurse said to the doctor, “You’ve only removed 11 spo nges (纱布), and we used 12. We need to find the last one.”
“I removed them all,” the doctor assured her. “No, you didn’t,sir,” insisted the nurse. “Think o f the patient.”
Smiling, the doctor lifted his foot and showed the nurse the twelfth sponge.
So when you know you’re right, you can’t yield. Don’t be afraid of those who might have a bet ter idea or who might even be more intelligent than you are.
Self-
respect and a clear awareness of right and wrong are powerful parts of honesty and are the basis for enriching your relationships with others. Honesty means you do what you do becau se it’s right and not just fashionable or politically correct. A life of principle, of not easily yieldi ng, will always take you forward. My grandparents taught me that.
