第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A
The following are four books that will help you change your mind and change your life.
1) You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay: A groundbre aking book when it was released in 1982. It is still the book that I turn to when I have physical unrest that requires deeper understanding. Louise Hay is the pioneer in looking at the connection between the physical unrest that we have in our body and the emotional connection. At the time that she wrote the book many people scoffed at this idea, but it is now widely accepted and millions of people refer to it on a daily basis.
2) The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz: Maintaining a sense of reliability and faith is developed thr ough understanding to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz written in 1997. We are faced with rules and regulations; don’t do this, don’t do that, watch what you are doing, be kind, loyal, faithful etc. The four agreements represent a simple system of maintaining your own inner authority while practicing being
a true person with other people.
3) Slowing Down to the Speed of Life, Richard Carlson and Joseph Bailey: This is a new one in my “bedside collection” and one that has made the b iggest impact on me lately. Written in 1997, it is even more relevant today than it was when it was written. The idea of “slowing down” to get there faster was extremely hard for me to understand. As a human species we seem to enjoy moving fast and expecting quick results, especially from ourselves. I should be successful now, I should be slim now, get me to my destination now —in contrast to “in the fullness of ti m e” when I am ready.
4) The Game of Life and How to Play It, Florence Scovel-Shinn: A classic book that was first
published in 1925 and remains one of my favorite books of all time. Scovel-Shinn understood the power of our words to express either our deepest desires or our most horrible nightmares.
So where does this leave you? The way I see it is if you want to ‘Heal Your Life” then you had better learn how to play “The Game of Life” by learning how to “Slow Down to the Speed of Life” and keep the “Four Agreements”. The solution may not be easy to do but it is simple. In fact, most solutions are p retty simple, and it is us humans that want to complicate it.
21. According to the author, people who are lacking in personal freedom should read ______.
A. You Can Heal Your Life
B. The Four Agreements
C. Slowing Down to the Speed of Life
D. The Game of Life and How to Play It
22. In which part of a magazine would you probably find this passage?
A. Book Re views
B. Self Improvement
C. Arts & Entertainment
D. Reference & Education
23. In the author’s o pinion, the four books ______.
A. tell us four interesting stories
B. represent four stages of life
C. represent four attitudes
D. offer four ways to change our life and mind
B
Football is a popular game in the world. It is the duty and responsibility of each of us to make sure that it is kept in its proper perspective(角度) and it is protected.
We feel that spectators(观众) can be most influential in helping keep it in its proper perspective and protect it if they develop the right attitudes.
Of all the attitudes that must be developed, the first thing is we are supposed to realize that there must be a winner and a loser in football. The fan who recognizes this principle gets more enjoyment from the game than one who becomes upset, angry, and rude when the team he/she supports loses. We should never think winning is less important. It is very unfair to the coach, the player, and the school when the fan forgets it is impossible to refuse to accept the law of mathematics—there must be a winner and a loser.
Secondly, it is important for e ach of us to develop the art of appreciating great plays made by opponents(对手). We should always give our opponents praise, and not criticize our team when the opponents make a great play. We should believe that perfection in a football game is to be admired and appreciated, just as we appreciate and admire the work of a great artist in any field.
Thirdly, spectators should remember football players are just human beings. They perform at times
under great pressure, and they, like all other people, are likely to make mistakes. Therefore, you should not feel angry w ith them if they make a mistake. We should always keep in mind that football, with all its charm, thrills and chills, plus everything that makes it great, has one thing more important than all of these combined—the boy who plays it.
24.What does the 4th paragraph tell us?
A. We should show respect for our opponents.
B. It’s important to learn from past failures.
C. Our opponents know us well in a game.
D. Football games can be regarded as a kind of art.
25. What does the author think of footballers’ mistakes?
A. Amazing.
B. Forgivable.
C. Stupid.
D. Unbelievable.
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It’s up to players to decid e who will win.
B. Footballers are different in their skills.
C. Football games have very strict rules.
D. Mistakes may happen in a football game.
27. Who is the text mainly intended for?
A.Teenagers.
B. Coaches.
C.Football players.
D. Football spectators.

Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. Th ey did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other
way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere(干预) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression. 28. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?
A. The environment.
B. Their peers
C. Mother’s sensitivity
D. Education before birth
29. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?
A. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born
B. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies
C. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills
D. To prove that babies can learn before they are born
30. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A. The children of women who did not suffer from depression
B. The children of depressed but caring mothers
C. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children
D. Children with high communication abilities
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies
B. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth
C. Scientific findings about how ti me has an effect on babies’ intelligence
D. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old
D
Nature has its own way of balancing itself out, but when we humans get involved, we tend to throw things out of control. Forests and oceans are natural carbon sinks that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but since we’ve been pumping too much into the air, those sinks can’t keep up. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, led by biologist Tobias Erb, have figured out a way to supercharge plants to make them better at absorbing CO2, which could be a key defense against climate change.
Erb and his team figured out a way to make plants more efficient at absorbing carbon, so that they consumed more carbon in a shorter amount of time.
“If you think about plants, they are efficient CO2-fixing filters, but they are not fast,” Erb said.
“I think there is a chance to improve existing biology with synthetic(人造的) biology.”
Erb’s team identified 17 enzymes(酶) from nine different organisms, re-engineering three of them, that had an enlarged carbon consumption. When those enzymes worked together as a team, they worked better at not only plants’ natural enzymes, b ut also themselves individually.
Exist ing enzymes in plants consume about 5 to 10 molecules(摩尔) of CO2 per second. The
team of enzymes that Erb used consumed 80 molecules per second.
So far, these enzymes have only been tested in test tubes in the lab, but the next step is real world testing where the enzymes would be introduce d into plants to see if the same result occurs. If those tests show that plants really can be supercharged, we could have a new tool in the fight against climate change where not only do we protect the amazing carbon-absorbing forests we have, but we also add these super plants or an artificial leaf technology using the enzymes into other mixed fields.
32.Why can’t forests and oceans balance nature?
A. Because oceans and forests are getting smaller.
B. Because we human beings give off too much CO2.
C. Because a large number of forests are cut down.
D. Because there are too many creatures in the world.
33. Which is the key defense against climate change according to Erb and his team?
A. To increase the plants’ ability and efficiency to absorb CO2.
B. To make oceans and forests to absorb more CO2 quickly.
C. To reduce the human’s activities giving off too much CO2.
D. To increase the number of plants in the world.
34. What can we get from the last paragraph?
A. The enzymes have proved useful in real world.
B. The technology has worked against climate change.
C. The enzymes have not been used in the lab.
D. The technology may have a bright future.
35. This passage is intended to __________.
A. introduce a possible way to better plants’ ability of absorbing CO2
B. call on people to pay more attention to the balance of nature
C. analyze the cause and result of climate change related to plants
D. explore the possibility of using plants to fight against climate change

Why we still need to read Dickens
Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into”Charles Dickens. Many of Dickens’ works still sell well today. 36
As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often on my mind. 37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’s writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type of thing that generated crazes. 38 “But why should we still read this stuff?”the student asked. The answer I gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said.
The question annoyed me for years, for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences.
39 But these are not exactly the reason why I read Dickens. My search for an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens’s novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the explanation I had sought for years.
Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times.
40 If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself.
A. Then a hand shot up.
B. I know that wasn’t really the reason.
C. And they are placed on outstanding shelves.
D. That question was never more troubling.
E. That’s why we still need to read him today.
F. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels.
G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens.
