Model Test Three

V Writing
(30 minutes)
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic My View on Disposable Products. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

My View on Disposable Products
Life is becoming increasingly convenient, especially to those busy people who are always rushing, and no doubt disposable products contribute a lot to this convenience.
Owing to disposable lunch cans, people can have their lunch without worrying about the dishwashing. Disposable toothbrushes, combs and other stuff ensure personal hygiene of the guests in hotels. At the same time, however, large scale use of disposable products
will certainly hurt the environment because natural resources are very limited. Besides, huge quantities of garbage resulting from the use of disposable products have been another problem puzzling human beings.
In my opinion, the existence of disposable products is perfectly justified, but its use should be strictly restricted. More eco-friendly ways such as thorough cleaning and reusing should be introduced to achieve both convenience and conservation of the environment.

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities

To Work in Big Cities or Small Cities
Some college students dream of working in big cities after graduation. They believe that there are many better up-to-date research institutes, higher living conditions, more entertainment facilities, and better working chances. All these will do great good to their future development.
Others prefer to work in small cities. Though living and working conditions in small cities are not as good as those in big cities, there are still some advantages of working in the small cities. For example, living expenses are low. Housing condition is quite better than in big cities. Pollution problem is not as serious as that in big cities. Your life will be less competitive and closer to nature. As the Internet technology has developed so fast, you don’t need to worry about being isolated from the modern world.
As to me, I think both of the above opinions are reasonable. If I have a chance to work in big cities, I should seize the chance and try to achieve more in my career. I’ll have to suffer from crowded housing, air pollution, and traffic jam. If my field does not need many students in big cities, I’ll accept it happily and enjoy my life in small cities. Our country needs me to serve the people there. In addition, I may develop fully in a small city. In a word, what counts is not where to work, but what to do in your future life. Model Test Seven

V Writing
(30 minutes)
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic College Life in Internet Era. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:
College Life in Internet Era

A. College Life in Internet Era
Seeing so many college students using the Internet, some people feel quite pleased and argue that the Internet has provided a more convenient way for students to study and communicate, but others feel much worried and argue that it has made some students neglect their studies.
In my view, the Internet does offer students an efficient way to study and exchange views. What’s more, the Internet may provide timely information which otherwise cannot be obtained. Through the Internet, students may also communicate with overseas students or professors whom they will probably never see.
Indeed some information on the Internet is not so decent or proper, but so long as students guard against such information, the Internet will certainly become an indispensable partner in their study.
Model Test Eight
Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?

Do You Agree “All Work No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy”?
I agree with the above saying. To begin with, work, includes mental toiling and physical laboring, and play are not contradictory but interact with each other in a positive way. The following will show how they work side by side.
First, work is necessary to our mind and body, but we need time to refresh ourselves as machines do to be refueled. Neither our brains nor our muscles can do without sufficient relaxation, since both are inevitably worn out after a certain period of work. We should know that our capacity is limited. Too much work will dull our wit. Without recreation our brains could become blockheads. I strongly hold the idea that one should stop working in order to continue to work and work better.
Secondly, play can do us good in many ways. Play is one of the natural sources of human ability. Life experience is what we get when we are playing, besides learning and working. In return, we apply our experience to our work. Play will help develop our minds, sharpen our intelligence.
In short, no matter what you are, either a mental toiler or a physical laborer, you have to follow "Hard work and adequate play make Jack a clever boy", if you desire to have a successful life.

B) Annual Expenses on Learning English
The pie charts show us the proportion comparison of English materials purchase made by the college students in X city in the early 90s and in 2003. In 2003 there are more
new choices for the students to spend money on, like Internet(10%), CD\VCD(30%), and tapes(20%). In the early 90s there were only tapes(35%) and reference books(67%). At the same time, the other graph shows that the average outgoings on English materials have increased from 60 yuan in the early 90s to 170 yuan in 2003. From these two graphs, we have learned that there are more choices of materials in learning English and students spend more money on English learning.
Some reasons can explain this trend. First, many students realize the importance of learning English. English is widely used all over the world. It has become an important international language. Second, since China entered WTO, learning English has become more popular. It is difficult to find a decent job without fluent English communicating skills. Third, as science and technology have been developing so fast, these latest English learning facilities have already been proved far more useful and effective than the books. In my opinion, this growing trend might be different in the future. Nowadays most pupils begin to learn English. One day in the future college students don’t need to spend so much in learning English. Their English will be as fluent as those native speakers. Model Test Nine
Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?

Which do You Prefer—Living in or out of the Campus?
Recent years college students are allowed to live alone off campus. Some people still take it for granted that college students should live on campus where they can learn from each other. They often neglect the fact that living in such small, noisy, crowded, inconvenient and simply furnished dormitories re stricts the students’ freedom, hinders their individual character development, and cuts off the students from the latest happenings of the world.
Therefore, my attitude for living off campus is positive. The reasons are just as follows. First, it benefits my study. I can stay up as late as I want. I can read aloud, listen to the tapes to practice my listening skills, and even learn things through Internet surfing. What’s more, it broadens my social cycle. I can meet my parents, relatives, and friends freely, and invite them to my place. I can even practice my cooking skills. And at last, living alone off campus provides necessary privacy for me. I can enjoy a comfortable, convenient and independent life. I don’t need to worry about bringing inconvenience to others and to be bothered by others.
In conclusion, it’s really nice living alone off campus. There are so many advantages. If you have enough financial support, you can try this appealing way of college life.

(30 minutes)
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic What to Emphasize in an Interview? You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

What to Emphasize in an Interview?
Interview is the most critical moment in getting a job. Some people argue that it is important to show one’s educational backgrou nd and academic performance during an interview; others argue instead that one’s social experiences and practical competence should be more focused on.
Personally, I incline to agree with the latter. The reason why a company chooses an employee is not that he has high marks, but that he will bring practical help to it. High marks
in examinations are nothing but theoretical and cannot prove one’s use value to a company. Yet use value is what a company most concerns while choosing employees.
So during an interview, one should show his practical ability as much as possible to convince the interviewer of his value to the company.

C. A Letter to a Friend
Dear Li Hua,
Your letter has given me a pleasant surprise. I am very glad you can come to Beijing this summer. I have been looking forward to your coming.
In your letter you asked me about the SARS situation in Beijing. In fact, the resent situation is not so serious as months ago, but you should not treat it lightly. During this critical period I’ll give you some suggestions on your traveling. For one thing, when you go to the crowded places you’d better wear a mouth-mask, which can decrease the chance of infection. For another, do not make yourself too tired during your tour, or your
body's immune status will decrease. The last but not the least, wash your hands frequently and particularly after any contact with other bodies. By the, eating more vegetables is also recommended.
I’m eager to meet you soon in Beijing. Wish you a pleasant trip in Beijing.
Yours sincerely

Can Success Be Measured By Money?
Can Success Be Measured by Money?
Many people now think that money is the first important thing in their life. They think that money can talk and make the mare go. In their eyes, if one can make a lot of money,
he is successful, no matter what means he may use to gain the money.
In spite of this there are still some others who hold different opinions. Money does not mean everything. Accordingly, it can not be used to measure whether one is successful or not. They have other measures — the benefit one brings to this world and the influence
he may cause on others.
I am in favor of the latter. If one is some of , he should bring benefit directly or indirectly to this world. He should influence others positively. Can we say that some of the notorious corrupt officials were successful while the world famous musician Beethoven not though he suffered great poverty in his lifetime? Apparently not. We can see that
success can not be measured by money.
Opportunity and Success

Opportunity and Success
There is a humorous saying in English—“The grass is always greener on the other side of the valley",which is used ironically to point out that there is a temptation in us all to insist that others are more fortunate than ourselves. Many eople have such kind of view that their failures are due to the absence of a good chance. According to their opinions, the key to success is opportunity.
On the other hand, other people hold the opposite idea that their own wisdom and diligence are the one and only way to success. For example, successful businessmen have often
worked long hours in their youth.
Chance goes away swiftly if we can't grasp it when it passes by. What can we do
with it and what can we depend on? In my opinion, the answer lies in our own wisdom and diligence. We have to work hard and ,at the same time, grasp the opportunity. In fact, nobody can succeed without any preparation even if he gets a good opportunity.
Wealth and Health
Wealth and Health
When asked what the aim of their life is, the vast majority of people may say making money. They believe that wealth means everything. For one thing, wealth can ensure them a comfortable life. They can enjoy fashionable clothes, Luxurious houses etc, for example,
wealth can also make them feel superior to the common people.
However, as far as I'm concerned, I would prefer health to wealth. On the one hand, as to the people who are rich, they don't need to work hard, since they can afford everything they dream of. As a result, they will feel dull about life. People who are healthy, on the other hand, can make money by their hands and can enjoy the fruit of labor. Consequently, it leads to meaningful and colorful life.
In conclusion, health is more important than wealth. Those who are rich but lose their health are no more happy and fortunate than who are poor. If you want your wish to come
true, health is the most important ingredient of your success.
Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way
Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way
No man can achieve success without strong will. We hear some people have got fruitful results, but hardly realize that they had been making painstaking efforts before they won success. Just as we can't reach the terminal of the long distance run without trying hard
and having the determination to win, we can't get to our destination without firm resolution
and great willpower.
Business success requires an unusual amount of energy and the courage to overcome difficulties. So it is important for us to have great resolution and to hold on to the
end under any circumstances.
Some people tend to be afraid of difficulties. When difficulties arose, they would complain that they were born not in the right place at the right time and claim the success factor is largely a matter of luck. Such people don't know the key factor of success —
the will.
In short, the proverb “Where there is a will, there is a way" is true of us all.
Let's make up our minds, stick to it and surely we'll succeed in our career.
Euthansia
Euthansia
To Euthansia or not, it's a question to be tackled. As we are more and more familiar with this medical term, this question becomes urgent to discuss. Euthansia refers painless killing of people who are incurably ill or very old. Some people hold the view that Euthansia is a kind of murder, for it tramples on humans' right to live. They think that every individual has the right to enjoy life, which should not be terminated by outer forces. Euthansia imposed on the individual denies his chance to survive. So it’s definitely
inhumane.
However, other people regard Euthansia as a respect to the patient's choice. They say that just as a person has his right to enjoy life, he also has the choice to end his life when life becomes a complete torture. In fact, they claim Euthansia not only ends the pains
of the patient but also save his relatives from the sea of trouble.
As far as I am concerned, I suggest a cautious and thoughtful use of Euthansia. It should be a decision seriously made by the patient, relatives and doctors. Only when the patient is trapped in an extreme hopeless state and beyond any hope of recovery or survival, can doctors give the final say to Euthansia or not. Anyway, terminating a human's life when necessary is also humane to the patient himself as well as to people around him.
Advertisement
Advertisements have become a part of modern life as they appear everywhere.
Some people hold that advertisements play a very important role in society, which create mass markets for products and supply the most direct and detailed information on goods, services, culture, employment and so on. What's more, advertising itself is a business that has provided a great number of jobs, and equally imortant is that it is a process of artistic creation, thus well designed advertisements make great difference to a drab
wall or newspapers.
However, there are still a lot of others who believe that advertisements are unnecessary. They take it for granted that high quality commodities naturally attract most customers. Besides, advertisements of the same type of things are often shown one after another, which
are so confusing that people do not know which product they should choose.
In my opinion, advertisements are indispensable to our daily life and help a lot in maintaining the economic prosperity of a country. On the other hand, there are some fake
advertisements which cheat consumers and we must always be on guard against them.
Students' Use of the Internets
1. 上图所示为1996年、1998年、2000年和2002年北京某校大学生上网情况,请说明其变化;
2. 分析发生变化的原因(可从上网的益处、上网的途径和社会发展等方面加以说明);
Students' Use of the Internet
Students tend to surf the internet more and more frequently nowadays. Reading th
e chart we can find that the average number o
f hours a student spends on the Net per week has increased dramatically. In 1996, it was less than 2 hours. In 1998,it increased to almost 4 hours, and in 2000,the number climbed to 8 hours. When it comes to 2002,the number
soars to 16 hours.
Obviously internet is penetrating our daily life. There are several reasons contributing to this fact. First, easy access to the Net attracts more and more students. The quick spread of personal computers, telephones and internet cafes make it easy to go online. In addition, internet facilitates us in many aspects of life. Cyber space offers you libraries, shopping malls, booking offices, banks, nearly everything necessary in daily life. A click on the mouse means your desire is fulfilled. Still another reason comes from the requirement for the development of the nation. Many people believe the Net is the
perfect vehicle to transport China into and through the 21st century.
However, there still exist some problems. For example, the crowdy dormitory bars students from surfing comfortably and false information or unhealthy trash make their minds confused. By the way, the charge for online is also beyond students' ability to bear. What is worse, some students indulge in internet cafes and ultimately affects their academic achievements.Anyhow, let's surf the Net but do it properly.
On Annual Increase of Students' Participating in NETEM(考研)
On Annual Increase of Students' Participating in NETEM
Recently, the annual increase of students' participating in NETEM has been brought to public attention. Graduate schools throughout the country seem to be attracting greater numbers of students upon graduation and people from all walks of life. Different people have different answers as to the reasons why there is such a boom in NETEM. Some people especially college students consider future employment to be full of grim possibilities; therefore they are determined to secure a higher degree with a view to adding some weight to their future occupation competition.
On the other hand, some other people find themselves lacking in the proper skills or abilities required for a particular job, so they hope to make up for their deficiency this
way.
As far as I am concerned, whatever purposes people have, taking up graduate studies is beneficial in every sense. Higher education provides individuals more opportunities in
society, and helps to enhance the quality of the entire population.
Competitive or Cooperative
Competitive or Cooperative
Competition and cooperation coexist in today's society. Various countries as well as different groups and individuals are competing sharply and cooperating closely. But which is more important, competition or cooperation?
Someone thinks that com
etition means more than cooperation. Being competitive is the first capital one should possess in order to live and beat others. If one is not competitive at all, he will confront
the danger of being left stranded. And only when one is more and more competitive—edged,
cooperative he will be simultaneously.
As far as I'm concerned, I also support the above idea that competition accounts for a large part in terms of one's success. To be competitive, one should be ready to endure hardships and pay more efforts. Thus he could find partners more easily and strengthen himself further.
Is Pressure a Bad Thing?
Is Pressure a Bad Thing?
In a society marked by increasing competition, people have to cope with various kinds of pressure. Those who are employed feel heavy strain because they are afraid of losing their jobs, while those who are out of work are faced with the greater burden of applying for jobs. Whether you admit it or not, pressure is everywhere in life and has become a problem
we have no way to avoid.
Different people adopt quite opposite attitudes towards pressure. Some are anxious about pressure and resort to constant complaints. Life is bleak in their eyes because time is always pressing, examinations are tough and the job is stressful. In contrast, there are some others who seem to pay no attention to pressure and regard pressure as a driving force which can motivate them to make greater efforts. Pressure is never a bad thing to them, instead, they even benefit from it. They have a balanced life and can always enjoy what life has bestowed on them in that they love their work sincerely and always work hard but
at the same time they play hard in their leisure time to relax themselves.
As for me, I think the latter is the right attitude. Pressure is inevitable but it can prompt us to exert ourselves in work thus bring our initiative into full lay. On the other hand, we must learn to relieve ourselves of great burden in life for too intense pressure is harmful to our psychological well being.
About Self-education
About Self-education
There is a very famous saying, “It is never too old to learn", which indicates that learning
is a nonstop process throughout one s life and self education is the key.
Self-education is not only a complement to formal education but also an indispensable part of one's life and work. Countless examples suggest the importance of self-education. A good case in point is English study. Though one may have aworking knowledge of English by knowing grammar and building one’s reservoir ofvocabulary, the truth is that language is changing. Without self study a learner will find himself failing
to communicate effectively in his field and society alike.
Two things are noteworthy. First, what counts is to keep on learning and never “to spend three days fishing and two days drying nets" as the Chinese saying goes. Second, we must always bear in mind that education means much more than learning from books or in classrooms, we should try to get to know society so that we could be more adaptable
to real life.
How to Learn English Well
1) 全民学英语是一件好事,应该鼓励;
2) 国家、学校、出版业和个人都应该做出自己的贡献;

Dear Sir or Madam,
It's nice to find a hot discussion about English learning appeared in your newspaper, and I'd like to join in the discussion myself. It seems that more and more Chinese people begin to learn English today. Men and women, young and old, all attach much importance to English learning. They learn with the hope to create better job opportunities, to read more English materials or to communicate with some English speakers. Such enthusiasm in China deserves praise and encouragement.
To learn English well is not an easy job. It needs the help from every aspect. Schools and colleges have done quite a lot for English learners. For example, a large number of English training classes are opened around us, giving us much convenience. But this is far from adequacy for English learners. They want more, more TV programs to watch, more quality books to read, more native speakers to ask for help. To meet the needs of these learners, our government, media, publishers, individuals as well as schools and colleges
should all make their efforts and contribute to English learning in the long term.
For most English learners, the aim of learning is not to do research, but to communicate and obtain information. Therefore they should place more weight on oral English, English reading and practical writing. In my opinion, there is no necessity for them to learn some
advanced academic books.
Sincerely yours,
Li Ming
Information in the Modern Society
Information in the Modern Society
It is widely accepted that information plays an important role in modern society. There is much evidence that the acquisition of sufficient information as well as the proper application determines an individual's success in his field. It is hard to imagine what
our life would be like if we were deprived of any source of information.
Information can be got through many channels. As college students, library is a major source of information that is related to our major. Of course much of our general knowledge is obtained through various forms of media: TV, radio, newspaper, etc. Now people in growing numbers are getting to realize the function of Internet, which keeps people informed of what is going on at home and abroad. Needless to say, the most available way is through
talking with other people to exchange message.
With the development of modern technology, we can anticipate an age of the real information explosion, when we may be introduced to things we never thought of in some unbelievable ways. However, in dealing with information, we must always keep in mind that a wise selection is very important in that some seemingly interesting but basically harmful
information may have side effect on our mental health.
Working at Home
Working at Home
Back to a few decades ago, the idea of working at home would still be strange to us. However, working at home has become so popular nowadays that some even claim that we have ushered
in the era of working at home.
Like all newly emergent phenomena, working at home has brought about controversial arguments on its pros and cons. Some argue that thanks to the advancement of communication technology, which makes working at home possible, human beings are provided with an alternative way of working that enables them to work at ease, arrange their schedules flexibly, and be freed from the waste of time in transportation to offices. However, there are also people who suggest that working at home deprives a person of the chances of communicating with others through work, isolates him from the outside world, and
discourages the spirit of team work.。
