荆州市中考英语英语阅读理解练习题
一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷
1.阅读下列短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Social media plays an important role in our lives. We check our social
media accounts(账户) such as emails and Facebook almost every day. Lately, people like posting pictures just for th e purpose of getting others' attention through their “flowers”, no matter whether these pictures are good or not. Recently, I was very annoyed with these types of posts, so I decided to stop using social media for one week.
After not using social media for a week, I can honestly say that everything has changed. Before last week, I used to check Facebook more than five times a day, as well as of my other social accounts, and I couldn't understand why I did that. Now I check Facebook much less.
People are so obsess(迷恋的) with posting pictures that have no meaning to them just for the purpose of posting something online. Whenever I look at Instagram, all of the comments on pictures are the same. People depend on how many “likes” they get on what they pos t as an achievement. I just want to say, “None of it matters!” As I start to fully understand this now, I wonder why I have social media if all of this annoys me so much. But then I realize that I actually post meaningful things that my friends enjoy, and to me, that's more important than getting “likes” on a picture.
Maybe as a society, we are using social media wrongly. I think we sometimes forget that social media helps us contact with people who are far away from us. I think it's a beautiful thing that I am able to go on Facebook and feel connected with people that I don't have the opportunity of seeing every single day anymore.
(1)Why did the writer decide to stop using social media for one week?
A. Because she had very few “flowers”.
B. Because she had got tired of the posts on it.

(2)What do we know about the writer from Paragraph 2?
A. She didn't know how to use Facebook.

D. She has given up using social media forever.
(3)According to the writer, people should use social media to ______.
A. receive important comments
B. learn about other people's lives

A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the north-east of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 177 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery and the cool summer night while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war over 1, 500 years ago, and built homes there.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there's nothing special but when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it's underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimetres. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt (融化).
Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be built under the seawater to stop the rising water. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.

The year was 1859. America and England had already fought two wars. Now, they were at peace. But one day a pig got hungry. And it nearly caused another war between the two countries. The pig was owned by a British man who lived on a small island. The island was just off the western part of North America. Both England and the US said the island was theirs. Across the island from the British man lived some American farmers. Everyone on the island got along peacefully. But the peace ended the day the British man's pig decided to eat some of an

The British and Americans began to argue, and the situation got worse. The farmers asked the governor over the island at that time for help. He sent a group of soldiers to protect the farmers. The British answered by sending 2, 000 soldiers. The British were on one side of the island, and the Americans were on the other. The problem that began with the pig was about to become a shooting war.
When news of the problem reached Washington and London, both leaders were surprised. Neither country wanted another war. They sent some men to try to fix the problem. After a discussion, it was decided that each country would keep a small group of soldiers on the island. They would stay there until the two countries could decide who owned the island. Great changes have taken place in family life because of science and industry(工业). In the past, when most Americans lived on farms, the typical family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Usually, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and move
again whenever necessary. And large families cannot move from place to place as smaller families. So, at present people tend to have smaller families.
In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consist only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take raising children as their chief work. At the same time they may also raise other people's children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.
(1)Which of the following topics is discussed in the passage?
A. The development of science and industry in America.
B. The influence of science and industry on American families.
C. Harmful effect of industrialization.

A. Families of the past and the present.
B. Families of the present and the future.

D. Families of the past, the present and the future.(3)What is one of the reasons that families are getting smaller in America?
A. Children tend to leave their parents and grandparents when they grow up.
B. People stop caring for children.
C. The need for workers who are able to move at any time has been increasing.
D. Both old and young people prefer to live by themselves.
(4)What can you infer from the passage?
A. Science and industry have caused thousands of families to split(破裂).
B. Children do not live with their parents or grandparents.
C. Large families can hardly survive in modern society.
D. Americans are very choosy about their jobs.

In the UK, Saturday evenings have always been a popular time for families to watch television together. One of the most popular programme genres is the talent show, partly because people of all ages are interested in it.
Early shows, like Opportunity Knocks(1965~1978), required people to vote(投票)for their favourite acts and performers, although in those days voting was done by postcard instead of by telephone, text, or over the Internet. Today, the success of television talent shows has reached a new level. Here are the UK's top three TV talent shows:
The X Factor In this wonderful singing competition, performers have to face a celebrity judge panel(名人裁判组)before the public vote. Many excellent singers became popular because of it. The show is now made all over the world, from China to Colombia.
