The author express his outrage at the spectacle of misery in the following way: • 1.the factual description of the miserable life of the natives is in itself a reflection of the author's sympathy for the natives and the hatred for the rules. • 2.the author uses rhetorical questions to add force to his outrage.for example,"Are they really the same flesh as yours? Do they even have names?"

• para 8 uses some rhetorical devices to describe the unpleasant living condition of the Jews. • para9 and para 10 uses a lot of contrasts to achieve the effect of irony and shows sympathy to the Jews. • para13'isn't it a fact that the average Jew is a labourer working for about a penny an hour'shows how little money the Jews earn directly.
The author talks about the invisibility of the natives at length to reveal the fact that the natives, especially those working by hands, are ranked rather low on the social hierarchy (等级制度,层次),leading the readers to think about the cruelty of colonialism and imperialism.
• 3. the author employs to show his sympathy for the poor. for example,in para15,he makes an analogy between the Jews and the poor old woman a couple of hundred years ago who used to be burned for witchcraft when they could not even work enough magic to get themselves a square meal.
the burial of poor inhabitants
in his description of a burial scene, the writer suggests that, for the poverty-stricken people of Marrakech,a proper burial is impossible. The dead are carried on the backs of friends and family, thrown into a shallow, unmarked grave, which is barely covered by the 'lumpy earth',and then neglected.
