There are many pe ople who could be Olympic Champions. I’d estimate (估计) five million people could have beaten me in the pole-vault(撑杆跳高) on the years when I won it, at least five million. Men were stronger, bigger, and faster than I could have done it, but they never picked up a pole, never made the efforts to vault their legs off the ground to try to get over the bar.
Greatness is all around us. It’s easy to be great because great people will help you. What was fantastic about all the conventions(大会) I went to was that the greatest in the business would come and share their ideas, their methods and their techniques with everyone else. I have seen the greatest salesmen showing young salesmen exactly how they did it. They didn’t hold back. I have also found it true in the world of sports.
I’ll never forget the time I was trying to break Dutch Warmer Dam’s record. I was about a foot below his record, so I called him on the phone. I said, “Dutch, can you help me? I seem to have leveled off. I can’t get any higher.”
He said, “Sure, Bob, come on up to visit me and I’ll give you all I got.” I spent three days with the master, the greatest pole-vaulter in the world. For three days, Dutch gave me everything he’d seen. There were things that I was doing wrong and he corrected them. To make a long story short, I went up eight inches. That great guy gave me the best that he had.
Great people will share. Great people will tell you their secrets. Look for them, call them on the phone or buy their books. Go where they are, get around them and talk to them. It is easy to be great when you get around great people.
24. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My Hearty Thanks to Warmer Dam
B. Many Men Are Better than Me
C. Share Your Greatness with People around You
D. Benefit from the Greatness around Us

A. a world record holder in pole vault
B. an Olympic Champion
C. a Dutch pole-vaulter
D. a student of Warmer Dam’s

A. Stayed in a certain level.
B. Go down in level.
C. Gone up in level.
D. Progressed on.
27. Why does the author think well of the conventions he attended?
A. Because many great people also attended them.
B. Because they were supported by many great businessmen.
C. Because great people were willing to share.
D. Because he learned to share his greatness with others.
C
It is rare to find someone who jumps out of bed fully awake as soon as his or her alarm clock goes off in the morning. According to a survey of people in England, the average adults there do not feel fully awake until 9:55 am. Of course these survey results do not apply to everyone. When it comes to what affects our sleeping habits and what happens in our body while we sleep, scientists have found two systems that adjust people’s sleep and also decide how difficult it is for a person to wake up from sleep.
Our system for adjusting sleep is like a clock inside our body. This body clock makes us feel sleepy or awake at certain time each day. Age can also affect the time set by our body clock to make us sleepy or awake. Most people go through a sleep phase delay when they are teenagers. During this phase, teenagers feel naturally more awake later at night. Thus, it might be difficult for a teenager to fall asleep before 11:00 pm. Since teenagers typically have to wake up early for school, it becomes difficult for them to get through sleep each night. On the other hand, those who do get enough sleep at night will feel less sleepy in the middle of the day when the clock in their body signals a peak sleepy time.
In addition to the “sleep clock” in our body, there is also a “sleep meter” in each
of us. The sleep meter keeps track of how much sleep we get each night. This meter also helps our body stay asleep throughout the night in order to balance the hours when we are awake during the day. So the sleep meter is like a natural device in our body that helps us balance the amount of sleep we need with the amount of time when we are awake each day. Some people seem to have a meter that tells them they need less sleep each day than others. Thus, while health professionals recommend 8-10 hours of sleep for children to have a healthy lifestyle, some people can be healthy with a bit less sleep.
28. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the processes of sleeping and waking up.
B. To describe systems in our bodies related to sleep.
C. To recommend the minimum amount of sleep per night.
D. To compare people who work well at different time of the day.
29. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “phase” in Paragraph 2?
A. Quality.
B. Balance.
C. Suffering.
D. Period.
30. What can be inferred about a girl who feels very sleepy during a peak sleepy time in
the afternoon?
A. She needs more than 9 hours of sleep each day.
B. She has a very active sleep gene.
C. She didn’t get enough sleep at night.
D. She spent a long time waking up in the morning.
31. What does the “meter” inside our body do?
A. It helps keep us asleep at night.
B. It determines if we dream or not.
C. It makes us sleep less when we are busy.
D. It changes how much sleep we need as we get older.
D
Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you’ve visited, or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.
In fact, it’s likely that some of these things have already ha ppened to you. Who would
watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girl friend, a marketing company,
a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended
to be seen — the 21st century replacement of being caught naked.
Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain.
The digital bread crumbs(碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.
The key question is: Does that matter?
For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.
When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a strong bad feeling about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me”.
But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements.
And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run
a series of tests that reveal people will give away personal information like Social
Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon(优惠券).
But privacy does matter —at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.
32.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To lead to the main topic.
B. To tell how important the privacy is.
C. To criticize the unexpected strangers.
D. To introduce the advanced technology.
33.What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?
A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.
B. There should be a distance even between friends.
C. Friends should always be faithful to each other.
D. There should be fewer arguments between friends.
34. Why does th e author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?
A. People leave traces around when using modern technology.
B. Modern society has finally developed into an open society.
C. There are always people who are curious about others’ aff airs.
D. Many search engines benefit from giving away people’s identities.
35. What do most Americans do as for privacy protection?
A. They use various loyalty cards for business.
B. They rely most and more on electronic devices.
C. They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.
D. They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

Fitting in fitness
Do you find excuses not to exercise? 36 Here are a few ways to get you going.
Do what you love.
The easiest way to fall into the habit of doing exercise is to choose an activity you enjoy —one that doesn’t feel like exercise, even though it is. 37 If you play to your strengths, you’ ll find fitness activities you can enjoy for years.
Choose your hour.
Studies have shown that people who work out in the morning are most likely to stick with a routine. By doing exercise before the day starts, they can avoid the last-minute scheduling conflicts. But if you’ re not a morning person, choose whatever time works best for you. 38
Call it by another name.
39 If it’s something you have to do anyway — like washing the car or planting some bushes in the yard —you’ ll achieve two goals at once.
Partner up.
Exercise is more fun when you do it with others. 40 On days when your motivation is lo w, you’ re more likely to stick with the programme to avoid disappointing your exercise partners. You can also train with an expert. A personal trainer will help you set goals, design a personalized fitness programme, and vary your routine to keep it challenging.
A. Ask yourself: what am I good at?
B. Make fitness part of your social routine.
C. If you’ re in top form from noon to 1 pm, aim for a lunchtime workout.
D. For example, you can join a running, walking, hiking, biking or tennis club.
E. Substitute some challenging household activity for the standard exercise routine.
F. Would you rather do anything else — even sort your socks or clean the fridge?
G. If a damp T-shirt is not your idea of a good time, try gentler forms of exercise.
