When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got interesting homework in electronic class. He decided to invent an alarm clock.
“Everybody has to stand it every day, and it is really unpleasant!” he says. He asked different people what they would like to be woken up instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon(培根肉)”.
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up. He explains, " There's no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bubs(钨卤灯) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically(自动地) after ten minutes. Yes, the clock itself can do it. Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm.
“What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm, "says Sallin.
“If you set the alarm for 8: 00, it will turn on at 7: 50 and slowly cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs, " he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan
blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.
“So instead of an alarm, you get a bacon smell awake, "says Sallin. "Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. "I wanted to make a lift in my backyard and a special tree house, he says. "But I never really thought I could be called an inventor!”
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things- but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.

Learning to read is one of the most important periods in anyone's development as it opens up so many opportunities. So many things in everyday life depend on your being able to read clearly. Here are a few examples.
If you want to find out the latest news about your favorite film star or the result of the latest match, you will pick up a newspaper and read what it has to say about these topics.
If you are on a long train or plane journey, you will probably have a book, a magazine or an e-book to help you pass the time. Even if you are someone who " doesn't read books", it is possible that you will have to read the rules of the computer game that you are playing.
Very often, you read something without realizing that you are reading. For example, you might check the time table at an airport or make sure that you drive carefully as you see the road sign"HILL". If you are unable to read, these necessary actions become either very difficult or possible to achieve.
So, you understand how important a part reading plays in your life. Everybody who is using this textbook, To Be A Better Reader, has got the art of reading more or less. Why, then, you may ask yourself, is it necessary to have to read a book that tells you how to become a better reader-- if you can read already, what is there to improve Well, please think very carefully about what you mean by "reading". Does it just mean that you know the meaning of words on a page and then speak them
aloud or to yourself Or is it something more than that
In fact, reading without understanding is worthless. The main purpose of reading is to help you understand the world better and achieve a more colorful life, So no matter where you are, try to read with understanding and be a better reader.
23. From Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 4, how does the writer prove(证明)his opinion
A. By telling reasons.
B. By giving examples.
C. By showing pictures.
D. By comparing differences.
24. According to the passage, people are reading when they .
①see a movie poster in the theater ②find a NO SMOKING sigh in the library
③enjoy a big meal in the restaurant ④notice a Great Sale ad in the supermarket
A. ①②③
B. ①③④
C.①②④
D.②③④
25. It can be inferred (推断)that the textbook, To be A Better Reader, can help us to .
A. learn new words
B. read out sentences
C. improve reading skills
D. know about game rules
26. What’s the main purpose of the last two paragraphs
A. To help us make a reading plan.
B. To help us be able to read clearly.
C. To advise us to read more textbooks.
D. To advise us to read with understanding.

One of the biggest street parties in the world took over London recently.
The Notting Hill Carnival, which took place from Aug 28-29, is recognized as the largest street party in Europe.
But in these troubled times –with terrorist (恐怖主义的)attacks and religious anger on the front page of newspapers – is it appropriate to spend the weekend dancing in the streets without a care in the world
Right now, “people must stand up for themselves”, said Patrick Bullock, 53, an artist who builds floats (花车) for the parade each year. “The smiles and dancing do not stop all weekend –the spirit of the carnival can’t be broken.”
The festival, now in its 50th year, started in 1966. But it was much smaller –around 1,000 people attended –and began as a way to bring together the different groups who called London’s Notting H ill their home.
Creator Rhaune Laslett, herself half Native American, half Russian, had the idea for the first carnival after having a vision (愿景). “I could see the streets full of people in brightly colored costumes, they were dancing and following bands and they were happy,” she told the Caribbean Times in 1989. “Men, women, children, black, white, brown, all laughing.”
During a period of racial tension (种族关系紧张), Laslett believed that music and laughter could bring together the different nationalities in her west London neighborhood.
“We felt that although West Indians, Africans, Irish and many other nationalities all live in a very small area, there is very little communication between us,” she explained in an interview in 1966, shortly after the first carnival took place.
Over the years, the party has grown into its modern day form.
“Our participants find themselves in a space of music, color and creativity which brings about the emotion of joy and encourages the freedom to express themselves,” said Debora Alleyne De Gazon, the carnival’s creative director.
However, not everyone is queuing (排队) up to join in, despite (不管) the carnival’s all-inclusive (全包含的) idea.
“I can’t go out from my door on that day with all the rubbish around,” said Fortuoso Cruz, who lives in London.
But when a million people come together for a weekend of eating, laughter and music –forgetting about life’s troubles for 48 hours –perhaps a little rubbish is a price worth paying.
27. When did the Notting Hill Carnival start
A. In 1950.
B. In 1966.
C. In 1978.
D. In 1989.
28. What was Rhaune Laslett’s original purpose when she created the carnival
A. To allow people in the neighborhood to communicate more.
B. To show off the neighborhood’s music and dancing.
C. To encourage people to show their creativity in the street.
D. To invite people around the world to have a great party.
29. What does Fortuoso Cruz think of the carnival
A. It has brought a lot of fun to his life.
B. More people should be invited to take part.
C. It should be canceled immediately.
D. It has caused him a lot of trouble.
30. Which word best describes the author’s attitude toward the carnival
A. Supportive.
B. Critical (批判的).
C. Disappointed.
D. Complaining.
