I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like t hat. It was because she was afraid of something and conquer ed that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn't seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. Although is often considered the city of romance, close to a million adults who call it home are single. Many single people say that ’s capital is one of the most difficult places to meet pe ople. The complaints of this lonely group have inspired a new phenomenon known as “supermarket dating”. At Galerie Lafa yette Gourmet, singles can shop for more than just the items on their grocery list. They can look for someone who has blue eyes,
brown hair, and is 1.8 meters tall, or whatever may be on their romantic shopping list.
At this location, single people of all ages can schedule their s hopping for Thursday nights between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. Whe n they walk through the door, they pick up a purple basket to advise that they are looking for love. When they are ready to pay, they can go to the checkout line for singles who want to c hat.
Most of the people who look for love in the supermarket are s keptical of Internet dating. They know that it is easy to embelli sh (美
化) one’s appearance or to lie about one’s age over the Intern et. The supermarket, on the other hand, is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another’s grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person’s character or intentions. Buyi ng pet food can be a man’s way of showing a potential match that he has a sensitive side. Women who fill their baskets with low-

Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to l ook for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefu lly consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.
A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos(纹
身) nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judg e a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in ord er to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tatto os and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as pe ople convey messages about themselves with their appearan ces, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.
Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom,
but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearan ces of their employees, because those people represent the c ompanies to their customers.
As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who woul d make the best impression on our customers. There are plen ty of well-
qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.
There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices d oes not match that of your preferred employer. No company s hould have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because h e or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its sta ndards are legal.
32.Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph2? ______
A. People’s appearances carry message about themselves.
B. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companie s.
C. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treat ed.
D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the work place.
33.What can be inferred from the text? ______
A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an inte rview.
B. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for compan ies.
C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their can didates.
D. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candid ates.
34.Which of the following would be the best title for the text ? ______
A. Employees Matter
B. Personal Choices Matter
C. Appearances Matter
D. Hiring Managers Matter
35.The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as ______ .
A. enthusiastic
B. negative
C. positive
D. sympathetic

化) one’s appearance or to lie about one’s age over the Internet. The supermarket, on the oth er hand, is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another’s grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person’s character or intentions. Buying pet food can be a man’s way of showing a potential match t hat he has a sensitive side. Women who fill their baskets with low-
fat food show their healthy style of living. These days it’s possible to find much more than foo d at a grocery store.
