第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Does a good mood help when doing your job?Happy thoughts can stimulate creativity, but for common work such as reading a dull textbook, being sad may work better.Stress, anxiety, and a bad mood are notorious for narrowing people’s attention and making them both think and see only what’s right in front of them.
But whether a good mood also expands people’s attention to visual details was unknown. To answer that question, psychologist Adam Anderson of the University of Toronto asked 24 university students to take two kinds of tests after listening to sad, happy,or neutral music. In one test, the students were asked to think of unusual words, thus testing them for the breadth of their thinking. As previously reported by various other researchers, those who have listened to the happy music—and who claimed to be in a better mood—were more successful in recalling unusual words than the other two groups.
In the second test, students were presented with a row of three letters and asked to ignore everything except for the letter in the middle. This measured the breadth of their visual attention and ability to focus on what was in front of them. This time, the happy-music students were 40% more likely to be distracted by the unnecessary information than students who had listened to sad music were.
“Attention can act as a beam of spotlight,” says Anderson.A good mood broadens that beam,he says, and in some cases leads to more distractions. But when focused inward, the broader beam yields creativity.“I like this study quite a bit,” says psychologist Elizabeth Phelps of New York University. So does Jeremy Wolfe of Harvard Medical School in Boston. But,he cautions,“this is a modest manipulation of mood in a laboratory situation.” Future studies should address the effects of mood variation “in real-life situations”,he says.

C.A good mood must cause more distractions.
D.People with creative thinking are used to controlling their attention.

Inventor Le Trung spent Christmas Day with the most important woman in his life—Aiko. The science talent enjoyed a wonderful dinner with his mum,dad and his £30,000 female robot, which he designed and built by hand.At home,Aiko helped cook the turkey and hang up decorations happily.“My mum and dad chat away to her after the meal.It helps by talking to her,as it improves her vocabulary,” said Le.
Aiko is “in her early 20’s”.The beauty is so lifelike with real silicone(硅树脂) skin and real-hair wig(假发) made by a Japanese doll company. She can speak 13,000 different sentences in two languages fluently—English and Japanese. She can recognize faces and say hello to anyone she has met.Her touch-sensitive body knows the difference between being touched gently and struck rudely.Like a real female she will react to being touched in certain ways.Better still, she is always helpful and never complains.Le even bought gifts for his dream girl.“Aiko is like any woman, and she enjoys getting new clothes,” he said.
Le once built his first robot when he was ter he devoted his life to creating the perfect robot, and his success so far with Aiko has won him worldwide attention. However,Le Trung still has one thing on his Christmas wish list for Aiko, mastering the problem of how to make her walk.He said,“It is the most difficult thing for any inventor to do.The problem is finding a way
for Aiko to walk that looks human-like without influencing any of her other abilities.I have spent the last six months taking her apart and trying out lots of different systems, but I haven’t been able to get it right yet.”
Working on Aiko,Le has spent a lot of money. He said he would market clones as home helps for the elderly or people recovering from hospital treatment in the future.

C
How soon will it be before robots become so intelligent that they will be able to do things, such as teaching languages or looking after patients in hospital? Some experts believe this will happen within twenty years while others disagree.
One London company,UAS (University Automated Systems) has already developed some machines that can be used as “home helps” for old people unable to look after themselves and who are living on their own or in special homes. These machines can now do such things as cooking eggs and cleaning the floor, and the company says that future models will also accept simple voice instructions and be controlled by a “brain” that is the equivalent(替代品) of the latest IBM microcomputer. The director of UAS,Mr. Henry Jeffries, believes that in the next five to ten years companies will have developed even more sophisticated(复杂的) robots for use in industry.By that time,it is likely that they will also have begun to sell new forms of these
machines into ordinary homes.Robots could do a wide range of household tasks, such as preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning houses and so on.By then, the price of such machines may have come down to as little as $1,000.
But Dr. Sandra Lomax, who has done some research into artificial intelligence at Sussex University and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology),believes we have a long way to go before we can develop truly intelligent machines.
Preparing an omelet (煎蛋) may seem easy enough. But suppose one of the eggs has gone bad even the most “intelligent” robot would probably still use it.If something slightly unusual needs doing—something that requires a little of ordinary human imagination,a robot is useless. They need programming for even the simplest of tasks and are not able to learn from experience.“Teaching a robot how to recognize a bad egg is far more difficult than teaching it to prepare the omelet,” she says.
64.A London company called UAS has already developed a machine which ________.
A.can teach languages and care for patients in hospital
B.can help old people do certain jobs in the house
C.is controlled by microcomputer “brain”
D.can accept simple voice instructions

A.do anything with imagination

D.making an omelet is easier for a robot than recognizing a bad egg
67.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to this passage?

D.Such machines are already being sold into ordinary homes.

LINKENHOLT,England(Reuters)—An entire English village, complete with 22 houses and cottages, two blacksmiths and a cricket pitch, goes on sale this week.
The charitable trust(慈善基金机构)which owns Linkenholt in Hampshire, southern England, has decided to sell up and use the capital it raises elsewhere.
The asking price when Linkenholt goes on the open market on Wednesday is 22 million pounds-25 million pounds, according to Jackson-Stops & Staff estate agents who are handling the sale.
One of the few things a buyer would not own is St.Peters Church, which originally dates back to the 12th century, but was significantly rebuilt in 1871.
Locals, who rent their properties, are expected to stay on after the sale, and most hope that a change in ownership does not mean a change in lifestyle.
“It would just be nice if somebody looked at the village and said,‘Well, let’s keep it as the village it is.’But you never know,”said Colin Boast, one of the village’s two blacksmiths.
Tim Sherston of Jackson-Stops called the village a “safe and sound investment”despite the economic slowdown. He thought the asking price for the village was reasonable.“You’ve got an entire village—22 houses,a cricket pitch,a village shop,a forge(锻造车间)and 1,500 acres of farmland,450 acres of woodland...We think actually there will be a lot of potential buyers for this.”
The estate is owned by the Herbert and Peter Blagrave Charitable Trust. With no heir, the late Herbert Blagrave,a caring racing figure, left his family fortune to a trust, along with orders that the money should be spent on sick children, the elderly and injured jockeys(赛马骑师).68.Which of the following will NOT be sold with the entire village?
A.Twenty-two houses. B.A cricket pitch.
C.An old church. D.A village shop.
69.We can know from the passage that the residents in the village ________.
A.will have to move somewhere else
B.only have the right to use the houses
C.live a simple and hard life
D.are angry with the sale
70.The late Herbert Blagrave was most probably ________.
