In the very early 1800’s, a young boy about 14 years old named John lived in an orphanage (孤儿院) in Old England along with several other children. Orphan meant unwanted and unloved.
Christmas was the one day of the year when the children didn’t work and received a gift, an orange. Usually they tried to taste and preserve it for so long that it often rotted before they ever peeled(剥开)it to enjoy the sweet juice. Many thoughts were expressed as Christmas time approached. The children would say, “I will keep mine the longest.” John usually slept with his next to his pillow. This year John was overjoyed by the Christmas season. He was becoming a man and stronger and soon he would be old enough to leave. He would save his orange until his birthday in July.
Christmas day finally came. The children were so excited as they entered the big dining hall. Immediately the master shouted, “John, leave the hall and there will be no orange for you this year.”John’s heart broke violently wide open. He turned and went swiftly back to the cold room. Then he heard the door open and each of the children entered. Little Elizabeth with her hair falling over her shoulders, a smile on her face, and tears in her eyes held out a piece of rag to John. “Here John,” she said, “this is for you.” As he lifted back the edges of the rag he saw a big juicy orange all peeled and quartered and then he realized what they had done.
John never forgot the sharing, love and personal sacrifice his friends had shown him that Christmas day. In memory of that day every year he would send oranges all over the world to children everywhere.
56. The first paragraph is mainly to tell us that ______.

58.According to the text, where did John’s orange come from this year?
A. It was made up of what these children donated.
B. His master gave him a whole one again.
C. These children bought him one.

How old is “old”? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. That was the average life then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span(长度) increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.
So, how old is old? The answer is one you’ve heard many times, from all sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel!” The calendar(日历) simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you’ve lived.
“Youth,” wrote an author, “is not a time of life --- it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by living a num ber of years; people grow old by deserting their ideals.”
There are neither biological nor physiological reasons to connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be affected with illness and physical disabilities than you are, but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to remain physically fit throughout your life.
Older minds can be as bright as young minds. Senility (衰老) is part of the normal aging process, but it is not a sign of disease. In a 1985 study of men aged 20, 40, 60 and 80 years, no evidence was found to indicate that aging was associated with an inevitable (不可避免的) fall in intellectual performance, in generally healthy people. Older people give up smoking and break other bad habits just as successfully as younger people.
59. This article is mainly about ____.
A. the average life span
B. aging
C. life
D. youth
60. According to the article, which statement is true?
A. Aging does not mean you become unhealthy.
B. Older people are not as smart as young people.
C. Most older people are physically fit.
D. Most older people are in poor health
61. Which question is NOT mentioned in the article?
A. The average life span today.
B. Senility is a normal part of aging.
C. Older people don’t have more trouble breaking bad habits.
D. You’re old only when you feel old.
62. In the writer’s opin ion, today a healthy 70-year-old man is most probably considered to be
____.
A. really old
B. in poor health
C. a sign of senility
D. more active
C
Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have
no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. "It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone." Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen. It is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year.He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. "The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person," said the 30-year-old.
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: "Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness."
63.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
A.Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
B.It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C.It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D.Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
64.Traveling alone is challenging because .
A.you have to make things on your own
B.it is hard for you to prove yourself to others
C.you depend on yourself whatever happens
D.it will finally build your character
65.What can we infer about Chris Richardson?
A.He started traveling at an early age.B.He was once shot in the arm.
C.He used to work as a salesman.D.His website inspires others a lot.66.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Travel Abroad B.Travel Unaccompanied C.Travel Light D.Travel Wide and Far
