Beside, he also invented the telephone in 1876. However, at the beginning, what he actually tried to design was not a telephone but a multiple telegraph. During his search to improve the telegraph, Bell invents the first telephone. One of his most famous saying is:“Leave the beaten track occasional and dive into the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something which is completely new in your life.” Indeed, what it was his acute curiosity that made his success.

13. A bright and impressive bus carrying fresh local produce appeared in a community of North Carolina in June 2022. It was the first pay-what-
you-can Mobile Market. As the name implies, shoppers could pay any price out of their own will. Even the suggested price was about 25% less than that offered in grocery stores. This market gave shoppers a dignified way to provide food for their families regardless of their budget.
Seeing the joy in shoppers’ eyes, Will Komegay, the founder of this non-profit program—Mobile Market, felt a sense of accomplishment. He had once witnessed a wasteful and unfortunate reality. At that time, countless pounds of food had to be thrown away by farmers due to the interruption in the supply chain. Meanwhile, millions of people were struggling to afford enough food to feed their families. Kornegay didn’t want to stand by.
With much working experience in food industry and background about how food system was designed, Kornegay decided to use his company’s vast network of farmer and food industry relationships to address the issue. His team used buses to bridge the farmers, the food industries and communities that needed food most. Thousands of pounds of food that was sourced from local partners was placed into homes.
Kornegay still remembered how the first Mobile Market came into being. His team made a detailed plan and chose the colors and images they preferred. Then they purchased a “retired” school bus and renovated it, giving it a new different look and equipping it with refrigerators and freezers.
Thus was born the first Mobile Market.
To date, the project has partnered with dozens of local farmers and food producers and has already served an estimated 10,000 families over 150,000 pounds of food. In 2023, the team hope to serve 80 sites across 20 counties in Eastern North Carolina. Their vision is to perfect the project where they live, and scale into every state nationwide.

14. Bamboo is one of the world's most useful plants. For thousands of years, bamboo has been used in many different ways-from food to
medicine to clothing and, in small ways, as a building material.
However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world. A professor at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is trying to change that. The professor and his students are testing the strength of bamboo. They are testing how much pressure or weight it can take before breaking.
Kent Harries is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Harries says that testing methods for bamboo need to be the same for all. They need to be standardized. Standardizing test methods for bamboo will help to bring the plant into common use. It will also give engineers and builders around the world a dependable standard.
Harries says that bamboo is strong in nature. The strength of at least three species of bamboo is similar to steel.Besides its strength, bamboo has other features that make it very useful in building. He says it is resilient(有弹力的), meaning it keeps its shape and strength even under pressure.
Bamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo that is suitable for construction needs much less resources than wood. The harvest cycle of bamboo is about 3 years. Softwoods such as cedar, pine and spruce have a harvest cycle of about 10 years. And hardwoods that come from flowering plants such as oak and walnut need more than 30 years.
Bamboo is widely used as food for panda bears. It is also used for flooring and window covers. However, for building, bamboo is not used much outside its native growing area. This is mostly because of its round shape. But there are other reasons too. People think -- or have the mentality--that bamboo is a low quality building material.
1. What is the author mainly talking about in the passage?
A.Make bamboo a common building material.
B.Take advantage of bamboo in our everyday.
C.Consider bamboo to be a common plant.

3. What does Harries think of bamboo in the passage?
A.Harries sees bamboo as a great building material.
B.Harries thinks bamboo is as strong as steel.
C.Harries sees bamboo as the most ideal Plant.
D.Harries thinks bamboo has the reliable shape.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?

15. A situation in which the student is troubled by his parents pressuring him to go into a job area that makes good money but he doesn’t want to go into that career area, is bad. The question is whether he should go into this job or not.
To start out, you need to go for what is best for YOU even if there would be some negative consequences. Y ou can't be happy unless you make decisions that are right for you. If you do not make your own decisions and make decisions that will benefit you, your life would be a big lie to yourself.
Living a lie would not be a very good life. The truth is much better than living a lie or some fantasy world. If your whole life is a lie, then it is not a very beautiful life at all. vaccine (疫苗). Y et like millions of others, he wasn’t having any luck scheduling an appointment. Nick would sit with computers on his lap trying for hours to book an appointment on different sites, which ended up in vain no matter how concentrated he was. “I felt hopeless,” Nick says.
Then he heard about Zwinggi, a 40-year-old mother of three who was helping to secure appointments for vulnerable individuals like Nick. So he messaged Zwinggi on Facebook: Can you help? Thirty-five minutes later, Zwinggi reported back—Nick successfully had an appointment to get the vaccine.
Zwinggi’s vaccine hunting started on February 1, when she learned that her parents—her father has diabetes and her mother is a breast cancer survivor with a heart condition—were unable to get appointments themselves. 文章介绍了袖珍日历的特点及未来。

17. Pocket calendars are information planners that fit neatly into breast pocket found on the inside of a suit jacket. 1 The smaller size makes
it possible to easily carry the calendar in a jacket pocket, a purse, or a computer bag or a briefcase without taking up much room.
The typical pocket calendar includes pages that are very similar to a wall calendar. 2 It also includes enough space to allow the user to write in notes on each date. Some calendars of this type will cover a total or fourteen months.
Many pocket calendars also serve as a day planner, and include other pages to record in-formation such as phone numbers, and email addresses.
These handy pocket planners and calendars keep a great deal of information in a small binding(装订). 3
However, the arrival of digital technology has cut into the market for pocket calendars somewhat. All the same functions can be handled with calendar and planner software that are included in handheld devices such as cellular phones, and in software included on laptop computers. 4 So this makes them more attractive to people with busy lives.
5 Card and stationary shops still routinely carry several different brands and models of the pocket calendar. The diversity in materials used to
create various brands of the pocket calendar makes it possible to purchase inexpensive types that are functional, or more elaborate and costly versions.
A.A full month will be laid out on one or two pages.
B.This allows us to make room for what’s important.
C.There are countless applications for a Web calendar.
D.In appearance, a pocket calendar resembles a basic checkbook.
E.The pocket calendar still has no danger of disappearing any time soon.
