Stay-at-home kids are named “generation nini” in Spain. They are those adults who still live at home and are neither working nor studying. But the problem is not limited(限制) to Spain. It is a worldwide problem.
In Italy, they are known as “bamboccioni” or big babies. There are nearly 60 percent of 18- 34-year-old adults still living in their parents’ home, up from almost 50 percen t since 1983. Once kept there by the love for their mama’s home-cooked food, the economic crisis(经济危机) has seen a rise in adults left unable to hold down a steady job or afford a home of their own. Last year, an Italian government minister said that his mother washed his clothes and made the bed for him until he was 30. He demanded a law forcing young Italians to leave their parents’ home at 18 to stop them becoming hopelessly dependent on their parents.
In the UK,the government has made the term NEETS —not in employment(就业), education or training for these children. In England alone the percent of NEETS aged 19-24 surged to 18.8 percent of the age group — in the last quarter of 2010, up 1.4 percent on the same period a year before. The number of British men in their 20s living with their parents has risen from 59 percent to 80 percent in the past 15 years, while the number of women has risen from 41 percent to 50 percent. The average age of the first-time house buyers is now 38.
In the US, the problem is kn own as the “full nest syndrome(综合症状)”. Adults there are left struggling to support adult children who have stayed at home with student debts and facing few job opportunities in a weak economy. A recent study showed almost a third of American adults aged 34 and under are living with their parents.
14. “Big babies” mentioned in Paragraph 2 may refer to those adults who ________.
A. depend on their parents for a living
B. are not as smart as others
C. lose their jobs in the bad economy
D. are poorly educated
15. The Italian government minister thinks that ________.
A. parents should make their children feel hopeless
B. parents should never make the bed for their children
C. young people should live on their own after 18
D. it is OK for adult children to live with their parents
16. The underlined word “surged” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “_______”.
A. moved
B. reduced
C. covered
D. jumped
17. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A. America has the most adult children compared with other countries.
B. American parents are happy to live with their children.
C. Some American adult children are causing trouble for their parents.
D. It is a tradition for adult children to live with their parents in America.

One day after more than a month of classes, I read aloud a paragraph from my book, recognizing all of the characters except for one. I sat back and started to register the achievement: I was actually reading Chinese. The language was starting to make sense. But before the sense of satisfaction was half formed, Teacher Liao said, "Budui!"
It meant, literally, "Not correct." You could also translate it as no, wrong, nope, uh-uh. Clearly incorrect. There were many Chinese words that I didn't know, but I knew that one well.
A voice in my head whined: All of the rest of them were right; isn't that worth(值得) something? But for Teacher Liao it didn't work like that. If one character was wrong it was simply budui.
"What's this word?" I asked, pointing at the character I had missed.
"Zhe— the zhe in Zhejiang."
"Third tone?"
"Fourth tone."
I breathed deeply and read again, and this time I did it perfectly. That was a victory —I turned to Teacher Liao and my eyes said (or at least I imagined them saying): How do you like me now? There seemed to be something cheerful in her eyes, but she simply said, "Read the next one."
It was her way of teaching. Success was expected and failure criticized and immediately corrected. You were right or you were budui; there was no middle ground.
I grew to hate budui. The bu was a rising tone and the dui dropped, like building my confidence and then breaking down all at once. And it troubled me all the more because I knew that Teacher Liao was only telling the truth: everything I did with the language was budui. I was an adult, and as an adult I should be able to accept criticism where it was needed. But that wasn't
the American way; I wanted to be praised for my effort; I didn't mind criticism as long as it was candy-coated. In China, the single B on the report card matters much more than all the As that surround it. Keep working; you haven't achieved anything yet.
And so I studied. I was disappointed but I was also stubborn; I was determined to show Teacher Liao that I was dui.
18. Which of the following can best replace "whined" in Paragraph 3?
A. swept away.
B. gave in.
C. returned.
D. complained.
19. What did the writer expect from Teacher Liao after he tried again?
A. Immediate correction.
B. A new challenge.
C. An encouraging response.
D. A strict comment.
20. How did the writer feel about the Chinese way of teaching?
A. Candy-coated.
B. Weakness-focused.
C. Interest-driven.
D. Criticism-absent.
21. What can we infer from the text?
A. The writer was struggling with Liao’s te aching.
B. The American way of teaching is better for adults.
C. The writer was not gifted in language learning.
D. Teacher Liao was not friendly with her students.
D
The widespread use of Internet technology has made our lives easier but causes a big challenge to senior citizens (长者), who are not always comfortable with smartphones and so many new apps.
Only a few senior citizens are able to enjoy the advantages that new technologies offer. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of people aged 60 and above was 253.88 million in 2019, about 18.1% of China's population. But only 23% of the senior citizens
were able to use the Internet. That means more than three-fourths of the elderly are deprived (被剥夺) of the digital benefits.
Many senior citizens who can't use smartphones are facing difficulties during this pandemic (流行病).Even with a smartphone in hand and Internet available, many of them still feel helpless. They don't know how to call a taxi through the apps. There have been reports of many shops turning away elders who don't know how to pay using smartphones, instead of letting them pay with cash. Worse still, as they don't know how to get the Internet-based health code (健康码), they are refused to enter many public places. Presenting individual health code is part of the epidemic prevention(防疫) and control measures.
New technologies become popular because they are often useful in our daily lives. But many senior citizens, especially those living in the countryside or those whose grown-up children don't live with them, are not able to use the Internet or smartphones, either because of financial (财政的) problems or because they cannot learn new things beyond a certain point. The digital gap between the elderly and the young is becoming more clear.
However, the senior citizens should not become a silent group deprived of digital benefits. It is our responsibility to help them bridge the digital gap, and be patient with them when they face difficulties catching up.
22. What do the statistics show in Paragraph 2?
A. There are a small number of senior citizens in China.
B. Only 23% of the senior citizens can use the computer.
C. Three fourths of the elders are unwilling to use smartphones.
D. Many elders fail to enjoy the convenience of the digital devices.
23. What does the author try to tell us?
A. Cash is no longer accepted in most shops.
B. It's a must for everyone to have a health code.
C. Most elders need guidance on how to use the apps.
D. Many shops now refuse to offer service to the elderly.
24. The elderly can't enjoy digital advantages for the following reasons EXCEPT ______.
A. their living areas
B. their financial conditions
C. their relationship with children
D. their difficulty in learning new things
25. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the present situation of the elderly?
A. Positive
B. Worried
C. Negative
D. Doubtful

How to Survive Being Trapped in a Lift
Being stuck in a lift, also known as an elevator, can sometimes be frightening, especially if you are a fan of those kinds of movies which have a lot of elevator tragedies. You may think being stuck in an elevator in real life is not like in the movies. 26
Remain calm and do not be afraid! You may have heard of this a lot of times and it is true that fear will do you no good. 27
Press each of the floor buttons one by one. Then, try the "doors open" button. If none of the buttons works, the lift is broken, and you need to let someone know about it.
See if your phone has any reception or Internet. 28 If you have WiFi connection, contact a family member or friend. Don't forget to tell them what the address is of the building and possibly which elevator you are stuck in. If your phone is not at hand, the following tips can help you.
Look through the gap between the doors of the lift. If you can see light between the doors, the lift has stopped near a floor, and you should be able to shout for help and be freed. Do not try to force the doors open yourself. If you can't see light between the doors, the lift has stopped between floors, and no one will be able to let you out if you cry for help. Look for an emergency telephone. If there is no telephone, press the alarm button repeatedly. 29
__30 If you have waited for more than half an hour and nobody has come to get you out, shout and bang the inside walls of the lift. If no one is answering, then you'll have to accept that you will be in the lift overnight. If this happens, make yourself as comfortable as possible to save your energy. By morning, the building should be full again. You can try to get some help then.
A. Check the time.
B. It will cause you not to be able to think clearly.
C. In the end, someone should hear you and get help.
D. Here are some tips to help you survive.
E. However, it is still an important thing to know how to survive if it ever happens to you.
F. If you do have reception, call emergency services.
G. Use your watch.
