This means they eat less certain foods, especially fats and sugars. Other people exercise with especial equipment, take diet pills, or even have surgery. Losing weight is hard work, and it can also cost a lot of money. So why do so many people in the United States want to lose weight?
Many people in the United States worry about not looking young and attractive. For many people, looking good also means being thin. Other people worry about their health. Many doctors say being overweight is not healthy. But are Americans really fat?
(83) Almost 30 million Americans weight at least 20 percent more than their ideal weight. In fact, the United State is the most overweight country in the world. “The stored fat of adult Americans weight 2.3 trillion pounds,”says University of Massachusetts anthropologist (人类学家) George Armelagos. He says burning off that stored energy would produce enough power for 900,000 cars to go 12,000 miles.
Losing weight is hard work, but most people want to find a fast and easy way to take off fat. Bookstores sell lots of diet books. These books tell readers how to lose weight. Each year, dozens of new books like these are written. Each one boasts to help people to get rid of fat.

Passage 4
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:
Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings.
They point out that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful
things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. (84) The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get reward for doing them.
(85) Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories, In Russia, for example, pigeons, which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak (鸟嘴). This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3,000 to 4,000 balls an hour.
Apes(类人猿)have been used in American in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys maybe one day gather crops and even drive trains.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade
publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In 61 a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend 62 can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are 63 readers. Most of us develop poor reading 64 at an early age, and never get over them. The main defect 65 in the actual content of language itself - words. Taken individually, words have 66 meaning until they are connected together into phrased, sentences and paragraphs. 67 , however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often falling back to 68 words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over 69 you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which 70 down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as 71 reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics(诊所) use a device called an 72 , which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate 73 the reader finds c omfortable, in order to “stretch” him.The accelerator(速读器) forces the reader to read fast, 74 word-by-word reading, regression and subvocalization, practically impossible. At first 75 is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster,
76 your comprehension will improve. Many people have found
77 reading skill improved fast after some training. 78 Charlce Au,
a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute 79 the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. He is delighted that how he can 80 a lot more reading material in a short period of time.

Confidence
Whatever one does, one should do it with confidence. If one had no confidence, there is little possibility that one would ever achieve anything, especially when one is faced with drawbacks or hardships. This truth seems to be self-evident. However, in reality we do see a lot of people who complain that they lack the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to overcome. For some, this might be true. But for many others, this only shows that they have lost heart.
Why do people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? There are, among others, two main reasons. First, these people do not have a correct estimation of themselves. Second, they over-estimate the difficulties.
It is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude toward one's own abilities. We should never underestimate our abilities but should believe in the proverb: "Where there is a will, there is a way." Confidence is the premise for fulfilling a task successfully.。
