Education is not an end, but a means. In other words ,we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them .Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable (时兴的)to think that by free education for all--whether rich or poor , clever or stupid ---one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees , they refuse to do what they think "low "work and , in fact ,work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries .But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated , farmer is far more important than that of a professor, we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses , we should get terrible diseases in our towns...
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life , it means that we must be educated in such a way that , firstly each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and secondly that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society , and that is very bad to be ashamed of one's work . Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

As we all know, the Dragon Boat Festival is our country’s traditional festival, but do you know there is also a Dragon Boat Festival in South Korea, which also falls on May 5 of the lunar calendar(阴历)? It has been reported that South Korea will apply to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO 联合国教科文组织) to make the celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival its own intangible cultural heritage (非物质的文化遗产). If successful, people from other countries may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.
As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2,000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. "It would be a shame if another country successfully made
a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural heritage ahead of China,"
said Zhou Heping, deputy(副) culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat event.
It is thought that the festival is held in memory of the great poet Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), who lived in the State of Chu during the Warring States Period. Qu was known to be a patriot (爱国者) and admired by ordinary people.
He is said to have jumped into Miluo River, because he had lost hope in his country's future. When people heard about Qu's death, they sailed up and down the river searching for his body. They also beat the drums to frighten away the fish and threw Zongzi into the water to stop the fish touching Qu. Dragon boat racing is said to come from this search for the poet's body.
Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of the local culture.

China has become an increasingly appealing market for Hollywood films, so it was inevitable (必然的)that Academy Award-winning director James Cameron would touch down in Beijing Wednesday to promote his latest big-budget movie, Avatar.
During his 20-hour stay in the city, he shared with local media and some lucky fans details of his new film and shared his insights(洞察)on China's growing film industry.
Having toured numerous countries for the promotion of Avatar since the film globally premiered(首映)on December 10, Cameron said he anticipated the visit to China for some time and apologized for his hoarse(嘶哑的)and tired voice.
"It is so sad for a director not being able to shout," he joked at the beginning of the press conference Wednesday afternoon, announcing that the 3D science fiction film will open in China on January 4.
Cameron collected 360 million yuan (US$52.7 million) at the box office in China with his blockbuster Titanic in 1998, a record that held for ten years until it was broken by Transformers in 2008.
Considering that another computer-generated, live action flick, 2012, has sold more movie tickets in China than in the US, the director said he is positive about Avatar's performance in China.
"Our partner here, the China Film Group, has given us great confidence," he explained, saying that the number of 3D screens has grown from 500 to 600 in the past month, a never-seen-before growth in Chinese mainland.
China is second only to the US as the country with the most 3D screens. Cameron said the screening of Avatar in China has specific importance as a test of future 3D film development.
"I'm very interested in the 3D film market in China. I cannot predict the box office results here, but I look forward to the test results."
82. Cameron is hopeful about Avatar’s performance in China because ____.
A. Avatar is a newly-released 3D movie
B. Transformers held the record of box office in China
C. Avatar is directed by him alone
D. 2012 had a higher box office in China than in the US

A. Participated.
B.
Paid. C. Expected. D. Delayed
84. The passage is most probably taken from ____.
A. a science book
B. a newspaper
C. a story book
D. a magazine
85. Why did Cameron come to China?
A. To promote his latest film Avatar.
B. To test the future development of 3D film in China.
C. To show his interest in the 3D film market in China.
D. To make a 20-hour trip in Beijing.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。

选项中有一项为多余项。

86.________
There are many occasions (场合) for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies; birthdays, naming ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year, It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one’ s first day of school or graduation from university, often require gift giving.
87. ________
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds up or confirms a social obligation (义务).
88. ________
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say that a gift lets the recipient (接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person “feel special. ”We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say “I’m sorry. ”Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages—often very expressive ones. 89.________
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years: “I appreciate these, and they mean something to me,” the woman said, “because I remember the occasions they were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we’ve had. ” The gifts remain and keep the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
90.________
Emotions (情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the anthropologist(人类学者)Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong
to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful. Studies in Canada and
elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if
so many are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very
reason for the tradition to continue.

Dear Bob,
I'm very pleased to write to you, I know you're an expert in English learning. I've so many problems to trouble you now.
English is so difficult that I nearly want to give it up! In English class I can't follow my teacher because of the poor listening. Also I can't remember the words clearly. Although I spend much time on it, I still can't use words in the right way.
What's worse, when I read English, I am often trapped in the unknown words. It stops me from receiving the main information. You can imagine what the result of my English learning is!
Those worry me a lot. What should I do? Would you please help me? I will be very grateful to get your reply.
Yours,
Fang Hua。
