Myanmar has closed the border to China to suspend rare earth ore exports to the top rare earth processor, in view of the environmental damage and conflicts caused by Chinese miners' unregulated operations, SMM News reported.
The border will remain closed until mining operations are rectified, which grows concerns about supply of ion-type rare earth ores, feedstock for medium-to-heavy rare earth products.
This is set to boost prices of medium-to-heavy rare earth products significantly in the new year, when demand recovers from year-end cash flow pressure.

1. Overview of rare earth market in November
Rare earth market remained weak from Novemberl 〜7. Inquiries were inactive. Price and turnover of mainstream products kept stabilized in weak.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Natural Resources issued the 2019 quotas for rare earth mining, and smelting & separation products on November 8. The quotas for rare earth mining, and smelting & separation products increased 12,000 tons in 2019. In addition, due to the influence of environmental protection, rare earth smelting plants shrank production and the supply was tightening in spot market.
Rare earth enterprises in Southern China began to purchase the medium and heavy rare earth products with a relatively higher price in the middle of November. The market of medium and heavy rare earth started to recover.
Affected by China Northern Rare Earth declined the listing price of rare earths on November 12, didymium market maintain weak.
Enquiries from rare earth down stream market gradually increased during the last ten days of November. Price of both light rare earth products and heavy rare earth products rose steadily.
