14、A Special Card
“Attention, everyone!” Miss Dalrymple looked at her class of ten-year-olds. “Today we are going to create a spe cial card for Father’s Day, which falls on this weekend.” Then she busied herself handing out the paper and art materials to her noisy pupils.
They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities(大部分)were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity.
“Think about all the things that your dad does that makes him special,” she said loudly as she came up to the last table. “Y ou can write a poem or short story that makes your dad s pecial. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.”
Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write
about him? Once when he was looking in hi s grandma’s photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased (弄皱) and difficult to recognize any clear features(特点). Grandma had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote:
Dear Dad,
You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago.
I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to. One day when I grow up I will do an Internet search to find you, but I am not sure whether I will be successful as several efforts by the Child Support Agency have not been successful.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
Love,
Andrew

15、"Where is the university(大学)?"This is a question that many visitors to Cambridge ask. But no one can give them an exact answer, for there is no wall to be found around the university. The university is the city. You can find classroom buildings, libraries , museums and offices of the university all over the city. And most of its members are the students and teachers of the thirty-one colleges.
Cambridge was already a town long before the first students and teachers arrived 800 years ago. It grew up by the river Cranta, and the river was once called the Cam. A bridge was built over the river as early as 875. So the town got its name "Cambridge".
In the 14th and 15th centuries more and more land was for college buildings. The town grew much faster in the 19th century after the opening of the railway in 1845. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and now it has a population of over 100, 000. Many young students in other countries expect to study at Cambridge. A large number of people from all over

16、When I was about seven or eight years old, I once went into the barn (马厩) one evening where my dad was doing his daily work. I was surprised to see him wearing his hat backwards. It looked funny.
When I asked Dad why he put his hat backwards, he smiled and gave me an explanation. There was a large water tank for the cattle that had to be filled every day. Since it took a long time to finish the work, he would turn the water on and then go about doing other things like cleaning the barn or feeding the cattle, which usually cost him twenty minutes or even more time. The danger, of course, was that if he forgot to turn the water off, the tank would overflow and water would be wasted, which would make a mess.
Then he told me the reason why he had his hat turned around. When he finished other work and began to take off his work clothes, he would notice as he removed his hat that the visor (帽舌) was not where it was supposed to be. This would remind him that the water was still running. Then he would go back to the barn and turn it off.
I have seen my dad develop many other systems over the years. And I will never forget how helpful and valuable they are. Some may have even been life-saving.
Sometimes, people may forget some things. So they will easily make mistake though they may try their best. Using some good methods can help them operate more effectively. In order not to blame others or yourself for mistakes, you’d better look for some ways, whether they are funny or not, as long as they will help you in achieving what you truly wish to do. This could be utility, and as simple as a checklist. Now I’ve used a lot of them, such as putting my car keys in the same place every time. It could be having someone check your work and it could also be a computer program that helps to
find out whether your calculations are correct.
