I spent my childhood collecting and pressing four-leaf clovers(三叶草)into books at my mother's house. I started with big cloth-and-leather-bound books. When I ran out of bound volumes,I began to slip my treasures into anything I could find, such as old fiction paperbacks and cookbooks. The same is true in my house today. Shake a book, and a treasure just might fall into your hand.
A few years ago,in Nova Scotia,my husband and I pulled off the road for a picnic. The ground was thick with clovers. Some shoots had four, five,or even six leaves. I lined them up on the picnic table to admire. To me,it was simple. The differences in their shapes made them stand out, breaking the pretty pattern of the common clovers with three perfect leaves.
Two summers back, while waiting for an airport shuttle in Munich,I found a tiny four-leaf clover in a traffic circle and put it in my passport. On the way home,my husband and I were upgraded to business class. All of my friends owed it to the clover. I think it's some likely that we were upgraded because a flight was postponed, which left us trapped in two cities for several hours.
People disagree about whether the luck comes for finding or possessing a clover. Some believe that the luck is lost if the four-leaf clover is shown to somebody else, while others think that the luck doubles if it is given away. I believe that positivity is compounded by sharing. I feel lucky to find the clovers so often, but I don't think they influence my life anymore than it does to share any thing a little special with a friend or a stranger.
4. What was the author's hobby as a child
A. Keeping four-leaf clovers.
B. Collecting different kinds of books.
C. Reading a lot of leather-bound books.
D. Decorating her mother's house with various treasures.
5. What did the author do when she had a picnic
A. She picked some extraordinary clovers.
B. She cleared a road fully covered with clovers.
C. She decided to stay in Nova Scotia to enjoy clovers.
D. She damaged some pretty kinds of conventional clovers.
6. What resulted in the author's being upgraded to business class
A. The friends' help.
B. The flight delay.
C. Her husband's company.
D. Her passport with the tiny four-leaf clover.
7. What is the author's purpose of writing the text
A. To advise readers to look for clovers.
B. To encourage readers to share with others.
C. To show readers the influence of good luck.
D. To tell readers the ways of keeping clovers.

The term ''helicopter parents'' refers to ''a style of parents who are over focused on their children''.
Helicopter parents are always making a big effort to provide children with every opportunity to succeed, from baby steps at age I, homework at age 8, college application at age 18, employment issues at age 25 to family problems at age 30, 40 or even older. They constantly (不
断地) shadow the child, always directing his behavior, allowing him zero alone time.
Helicopter parenting can develop for a number of reasons. Worries about the economy, the job market, and the world in general can push parents toward taking more control over their children’s life in an attempt to protect them. Adults who felt unloved or ignored as children can overcompensate (对……补偿过多) with their own children. When parents see other over-involved parents, it can cause a similar response. They feel that if they don t involve themselves in their children’s lives, they are bad parents.
The main problem with helicopter parenting is that it can backfire. To give an example, the house where Mary lived with roommates was broken into and things were stolen. Mary called the landlord to install (安装) an alarm system, but before she could finish the negotiations (协商), her mother rushed in and demanded action. ''I felt like my mother ruined my communication with our landlord. We could have gotten it done ourselves. She was well intended but only made me feel annoyed and defeated, '' says Mary.
Obviously, overparenting is motivated with the idea of doing good things but it does the exact opposite. In the long run parents are in fact damaging their child's basic skills to deal with matters independently. It makes the child feel lacking in confidence, less competent in dealing with the stresses of life on their own. They're winning the battle, but in fact losing the war.
8. What's the purpose of helicopter parents’ overparenting?
A. To make their children not ignored.
B. To help their children find a good job.
C. To do something good for their children.
D. To get rid of the pressure from other parents.
9. What does the underlined word ''backfire'' in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Make an unwanted effect.
B. Get a lot of support.
C. Set fire in the backyard.
D. Help to be independent.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Children who have helicopter parents live a hard life.
B. Helicopter parenting only happens to very young children.
C. Helicopter parents do their children great harm in the long run.
D. Helicopter parents can protect their children against all problems.
11. What will possibly be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. The bad effects of helicopter parenting.
B. How we can avoid being helicopter parents.
C. Different opinions about helicopter parenting.
D. The reasons for the development of helicopter parents.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. B

我们本来可以自己解决问题。

她的本意是好的,但却让我感到生气和挫败。

”)结合句意,可推测划线部分的意思是“有不好的结果/影响”。

Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children.
One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs.
A second study ,looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t prove that TV is the cause and don't ride out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人)may watch lots of TV.
Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. These with college degrees had watch an average of less than two hours of TV per week night during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2.5 hours for those who had no education beyond high school.
In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest.
While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to increasing findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms.
12. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _________.
A. have had computers in their bedrooms
B. not be interested in math
C. be unable to go to college
D. have watched a lot of TV
13. What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results?
A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV.
B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest.
C. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain.
D. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds.
14. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. TV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms.
B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV.
C. More time should be spent on computers.
D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done
15. What would be the best title for this text?
A. Computers or Television
B. Effects of Television on Children
C. Studies on TV and College Education
D. Television and Children's Learning Habits
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第三段“A second study, looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. 但研究结果并不能证明电视是原因,也不能排除已经缺乏动力的年轻人可能会看很多电视的情况。

)”可推断,通过新西兰调查研究结果,研究人员认为:电视和教育水平之间的因果关系很难解释,故选C。

【14题详解】
推理判断题。

倒数第二段介绍了加州的研究,最后一段得出结论:“While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to increasing findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms(虽然这项研究没有证明卧室里的电视机导致了较低的分数,但它进一步证实了越来越多的研究结果:孩子们的卧室里不应该有电视).”可知,通过最后两段我们可以得知,孩子们的卧室里不应该有电视。

故选A。

【15题详解】
