One of the hardest parts of planning a trip to Hawaii is deciding which of the major Hawaiian Islands you should visit. Each has its own personality and offers unique adventures and activities.
Oahu
Oahu has a bit of everything, packed in 597 square miles. You can hike into thick rainforests, and when you need a break, relax on powdery white sand beaches and stay at luxury resorts.
Oahu has become a great destination for families. The urban core (核心) of Honolulu and Waikiki has historic sites, museums and bustling〔熙熙攘攘的〕and nightlife scenes. The island lives up to its nickname of the Gathering Place.
Maui
Maui is a great island for honeymooners. The Valley Isle has top-class resorts and golf courses, adjacent〔毗邻〕to some of the state’s best beaches. A large dormant 〔休眠〕volcano in east Maui at sunrise or sunset is a serene experience, as well as driving the Road to Hana, famed for its thundering waterfalls.
Kauai
Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. The island gets a lot of rain, but that’s what makes it so lively. You’ll come across flowers and plants you’ve never seen before. For some of the best views on the island, visit Waimea Canyon,
known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, and the Na Pali coast, boasting some of the world’s highest sea cliffs.
Big Island
The Big Island is the only Hawaiian island still growing. Witness the power of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, wind, lightning and volcanoes with a visit to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s one of the few spots in the world where you can see lava flow. In fact, the Big Island has 10 of the world’s sub-climate zones, from the snow-covered mountain of Mauna Kea, green forests of Waipio Valley to stretches of barren desert.
21. Which is young couples’ favorite?
A. Oahu.
B. Maui.
C. Kauai.
D. Big Island.
22. How is Oahu different from the other places?
A. It belongs to Hawaii.
B. It offers the best beaches.
C. It has variety of plants.
D. You can experience city life on it.
23. What do Maui and Big Island have in common?
A. They are both covered with snow.
B. You can have a look at a volcano.
C. Weather is changeable.
D. There is plenty of rain.

My motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer's road trip.
As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem. I thought. So I put Roald d ahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their scats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.
We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Mo nkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach, We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复〕electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home,I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.〞 Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I'm beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we've started something that will pass on to the next generation.
24. Why did the author start reading in the car?
A. She wanted to have a better journey.
B. She wanted to keep a family tradition.
C. Her children were addicted to music.
D. She wanted to kill the time.
25. How did the children react after the author read a few lines?
A.They kept quarelling.
B.They hid themselves.
C.They soon settled down.
D.They continued to fight in their seats.
26. What can we learn about the author and her family's trip to the beach?
A. They were caught in a storm.
B. They enjoyed reading on the road.
C.They had a good time on the beach.
D. They thought it had passed too quickly.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Better Reading than Traveling
B.Books that Changed My Children
C.Road Trips Full of Challenges.
D.Reading Makes Great Road Trips.
C
The British—-and especially the English—-are bad at complaining. Because of British politeness rules, according to which conflict should be avoided, people either just do not complain, or sometimes bottle it up and then outpour it in another way in other unimportant situations. In fact, there is a TV programme which shows the British in typical situations where they would be perfectly reasonable in
complaining, but they don’t. In one scene, a woman reads a newspaper over people’s shoulders and the people say nothing or look embarrassed.
The British are also well-known for putting up with bad service everywhere from restaurants to airports and railway stations because the standard rules of behaviour say that it is bad to draw attention to yourself. This is why, when you travel on the tube in London and there is yet another delay, the passengers will look at each other, sigh, smile wearily and raise their eyes to heaven. They might even say, “Huh! Typical!〞 in a resigned (顺从的) tone of voice that says that there’s n othing that can be done about it. When complaints are made, they are made in an apologetic or a humorous tone of voice. In France, on the other hand, angry passengers might riot (闹事) and burn down the subway station if they had to put up with the poor service that the London underground provides.
Americans and other Europeans who are much more direct and in-your-face than the British, often wonder why British people always say “sorry〞or “excuse me〞when they complain. It’s like they’re apologizing for something that isn’t their fault, they say. They are missing the point. British people are not really sorry—it is because the word “sorry〞 actually works as a distancing skill. This is important in terms of negative politeness and not drawing attention to yourself. If you do not say “sorry〞or use other distancing words like “could〞, “would〞, “might〞, “possibly〞' and so on, you will be seen as rude.
28. What does the underlined part “bottle it up〞 in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Put something into bottles.
B. Not do anything dangerous.
C. Not allow emotions to be seen.
D. Cause problems by hesitating. 29. The French tend to .
A. tolerate bad service
B. enjoy taking the subway
C. make a complaint humorously
D. express their dissatisfaction directly
30. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Complain
B. Complaining Politely
C. Poor Service in Britain
D. Politeness Rules across the World

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a high school student. I’m so e xcited to hear that China Daily is in need of some volunteers to introduce Chinese culture overseas that I can’t wait to sign up at the first time.
First of all, I have been to numerous famous scenic spots, and developed an outgoing and open-minded personality, which makes it easy for me to get along well with others. Secondly, my hometown is a famous historical and cultural city. On holidays, I often act as a volunteer tour guide to show foreign tourists around and introduce them Chinese history and cultur e, from which I’ve gained relevant experience. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that I got 7 points in IELTS early this year, which guaranteed my fluent expressing and effective communication with foreigners. So, I firmly believe that I’m the very person you’re looking for.
Give me a chance and I’ll try my best. Your prompt response will be appreciated.
Yours,
Li Hua

Good morning. This is Lydia speaking. Now I have no other choice but to call you to complain about the recent purchase of a woolen sweater from your department store on Philip Street, on September 25th. I recently washed the sweater in cool water, following the instructions. However, when I moved it from the machine, the sweater became too large and wrinkled and no longer fit me well. I phoned the store last Tuesday, which was October 12th, and spoke to the shop assistant, a Mr. Morris, who was rather rude on the phone and informed me that I could not get a replacement sweater as it was purchased at a reduced price. Later I phoned again but once more received a cold answer from one of your helpline staff that she could do nothing to help.
I felt really upset, for I have been a regular customer of your store for many years
