It happened on a very poor but bliss ful young couple named Jim and Della in the end of 19th century in America . They worked hard but earned little. Life is very hard for them. They have only two possessions between them in which they take pride: Della's beautiful long, flowing hair and Jim's shiny gold watch.

Real name: William Sydney Porter American writer One of the three most famous masters of short happened in the 1899 ，at that time, O. Henry was worrying about as a prisoner that he was no money to the beloved daughter to buy Christmas gifts when Christmas approaching. He is so painful and finally he remembered he had done before in a magazine , he had received a generous remuneration for writing some essays and stories. Why not try it again - he thought. So he have a hurry to write a novel: “The gift of the Magi." Dell thought: Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. "Dell," Jim said, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep them a while. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs .
Out of his trance Jim seemed quickly to wake. He enfolded his Della. Then, Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table. He said “if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first. ”
They love each other, but they were very poor.
• She only had one dollar and eightyseven cents. she knew it was not enough to buy any good gift, so she decided to cut down her brown hair and exchange for the 20 U.S. dollars.
At 7 o'clock, the door opened and Jim stepped in and closed it. His eyes fixed upon Della, and there was anexpression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her. It was not anger, nor surprise, nor disappr oval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that had been prepared for.
But the fact is that no matter how tough life had been,they wouldn't lose heart. With strong faith and their love ,they did their best to make the other pleased.
