In the aqueous suspension polymerization of an olefinically unsaturated monomer, an alkyl hydroperoxide is reacted with a hydroxy acid of sulphur having reducing properties or a salt of such an acid in water, subsequently adding a suspending agent, monomer and catalyst and polymerizing. Preferred reactants are tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and these may be reacted in water of a pH less than 7. The preferred monomer is styrene, and suitable catalysts are benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, lauroyl peroxide, ditertiary butyl peroxide and 2-azo-bisisobutyronitrile. Preferably, the reaction temperature is 40-200‹ C. In the examples, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide are reacted and then the following ingredients added wherein polymerization commences-water, sodium phosphates, styrene, mineral oil, calcium chloride stearic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
