第1题.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My fiance(未婚夫)and I were excited about shopping for our first home. But our funds were limited, and none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory.
One agent recommended a house in particular. Although her description sounded wonderful, the price was beyond our range, so we declined. But she kept urging us to have a look at least.
We finally did and it was love at first sight: It was Our Home, small but charming, overlooking a quiet lake. Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a nice elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that home. As perfect as it was, the price remained too high for us. But every day, we would sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live there.
Days later, we made an offer—far below the asking price. Surprisingly, they didn't laugh at us. They renewed their offer instead. It was also much more than we could afford, but far less than the original asking price.
The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer had offered a much higher price. Even so, we decided to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which still was thousands of dollars less than the other buyer's bid. We knew it, but we had to try. Nobody knew if we could get it.

We went to the owners' home. The other buyer was there too. ________ The owner looked at us and said, "I want to sell my house to you!" ________

Johnny's Long Hair
"When are you going to get a haircut?" Johnny's relatives would ask whenever they saw him. Johnny's reply was always the same, "When pigs start to fly."
Although Johnny was aware that his relatives thought he was funny, he was also aware of their concern regarding his long shoulder-length hair.
But Johnny's hair received plenty of attention. Once, Johnny passed by a group of girls who giggled(咯咯笑)and looked at him. "I like your hair," one of them said to Johnny as he walked away.
Johnny enjoyed walking around with his long black hair and also enjoyed the attention strangers and friends would give him. Walking down the street was never the same after he started doing it with long hair. He never wanted to cut his hair short ever again.
However, this would all change with one conversation on a Saturday morning while having breakfast with his parents. It seemed like any other regular Saturday morning at Johnny's house. Mom was cooking pancakes;
Dad was reading the newspaper; Johnny was sitting at the table, drinking some orange juice.
"Johnny, it is time for you to get a job," Johnny's dad said all of a sudden, without any warning.
Johnny nearly spat out his orange juice after hearing his dad's remark.
"What?" Johnny said after a while.
"There comes a time in every boy's life when he must finally cut his hair and get a job," said Dad. "You have been wandering for two years since you graduated from high school."
"But, Dad!" Johnny tried to reason.
"No buts," Dad stopped him.

That afternoon Dad took him to a barber shop. ________
While in high school, Johnny always had short hair. ________
【答案】
That afternoon Dud took him to a barber shop. He reluctantly sat down on the barber's chair wearing a long face. He loved his long hair, and took good care of it. Every day he would wash it and brush it many times. Johnny felt so cool with his long hair. It made him look like a rock star, and Johnny really did not want to have his hair cut anytime soon.
While in high school, Johnny always had short hair. Although it did not look unappealing, he was not too fond of his short hair, and desired to grow it out one day. He made a promise to himself to do so after graduation and had
gone through with his promise. He began growing it after high school. He thought that it was the best decision he had ever made.

It was one o' clock in the morning. In the Rivesville town art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the art gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked across the room at a painting.
"There it is! "he said.
Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting.
"A million dollars for this? " he thought. "I don't understand it. "
But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame. Harry went back across the room to the window, but he
walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell on the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the piece of glass to the window.
Harry rented a room in Mrs. Allen's house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it with a newspaper and put the newspaper under his bed.
In the morning, Janey Allen was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Rivesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at the photo of the blue vase.
At that time Harry wasn't in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took them from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.
Janey opened Harry' s door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for recycling. She found a newspaper under Harry' s bed. She put the old newspapers into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house
and saw the truck. "Wait! " she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.
Harry came back to the house. He saw the recycling truck, and he saw Janey.
"The newspaper—! Oh, no! " Harry said.

That night, I quarreled with my mother, and then ran out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, and that I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter(柜台)and asked, "Hey, little girl, you want to eat a bowl?"
"But...but I do not carry money..." I shyly replied.
"Okay, I' ll treat you," the seller said. "Come in. I will cook you a bowl."
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!" I said as I wiped my tears. "Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother,
after a quarrel, chased(追逐,追赶)me out of the house. She is cruel(残忍的)! !
The seller sighed(叹气), "Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little. Why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?"
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised(养育)me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

All her kindness came back to me. I should be grateful for all she had done for me. I realized I should go back home immediately and say sorry to my mother.
Paragraph 2:
When arriving home, I saw my mother siting at the dinner table, worried and tired. She must have been looking for me everywhere. I was ready for her
anger and shouts. However, before I could apologize, my mother saw me and gently said, "Oh, honey, thank God you're back! Come inside. You are probably very hungry. I cooked your favorite noodles. Come and cat while they are still hot..." No longer able to control myself, I cried in her arms. "I'm sorry, Mom. Please forgive me." I whispered to her with tears, extremely ashamed of myself.

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue(美德). Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 pm. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.
I would never forget the way he looked at me. "I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason." My father looked at me again and said, "When you didn't show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all."

Paragraph 2:
"But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it's dark. You can't walk back." I begged. ________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him, "I'm angry, not with you but with myself. You see. I realize that I have failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I'm going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years."
Paragraph 2:
"But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it's dark. You can't walk back." I begged. My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down, and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads.
I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson.

Catherine Svilicic never would have guessed her adopted rescue dog Khan would act out with aggression(攻击性)towards her young 17-month-old baby, Charlotte!
The day began with the usual playtime outside. Although baby Charlotte had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Charlotte and the new dog had been making a habit of playing like this. However, things were different that day. Catherine watched as Khan threw her baby across their backyard! Why was Khan acting as though a lovely child was a threat? Catherine watched him drag her child, hoping he would stop. Sadly, it seemed Catherine needed to immediately intervene because this was only the beginning. He tightly clenched his jaws(咬紧牙关)into her
diaper(纸尿裤)to throw her back and forth. This is when things got out of hand. Certainly, Catherine was angry with Khan for throwing her girl. However, something deep down told Catherine there was more to this than what they were seeing. Little did she know, these doubts would turn out to be true.
But her baby was still in great danger. Catherine noted that her baby seemed a target. That moment we mentioned when the dog sunk his teeth into Charlotte's diaper and used his strength to throw her baby like "a doll". How terrifying! Luckily, those teeth did not go near her skin and especially face and the baby was actually quite calm. Perhaps, the baby under-stood something about Khan's intentions.
Catherine knew that she needed to act fast and catch her poor child. Something happening to Khan next that confused the whole family.
While the baby stayed calm, others could not help but panic. Charlotte's mother said, "Had I not seen it with my very own eyes, I'd never have believed it." Therefore, she ran to Charlotte and carried her to safety.

While Catherine brought her baby to shelter, Khan barked madly and then fell down. ________
Finally, the whole family realized Khan was a hero of attacking a poisonous snake. ________
【答案】
While Catherine brought her baby to shelter, Khan barked madly and then fell down. He did not just fall down for nothing as he began crying. No one understood what was going on! The dog continued crying and then fell almost lifeless. Now this sent Catherine into panic mode. She focused on the
dog, watching his dying eyes and realized it was clear he needed emergency care. And it occurred to her that Khan had been protecting her child instead of attacking her.
Finally, the whole family realized Khan was a hero of attacking a poisonous snake. It turns out that Khan was protecting Charlotte from a poisonous, deadly snake even though living with the family for only four days. Thus, it was lucky that Khan caught the snake and did really save that baby's life, showing his unconditional love. With the rest of the family watching in shock, Catherine hurried to the vet's clinic. Fortunately, Khan, this heroic animal, impressed even the vets with his rapid recovery and progress. Finally, the family could be reunited!

A Warm Scarf
I was a proud mother of three children, and my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend's mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit a scarf. She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn(纱线)since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended(暂停)and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was extremely cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, "Mum, it's freezing outside!" Then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a
kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Paragraph 1:
I wrapped the scarf around David's neck. ______
Paragraph 2:
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. ______
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I wrapped the scarf around David's neck. David's face lit up with joy. Stroking the scarf softly, David excitedly kissed me in the neck, beaming at me. "Thank you, Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received." Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Jane with a spring in his step. I felt relieved and content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone-chilling wind. Wearing a smile on the face, I continued my chores that morning.
Paragraph 2:
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Jane could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. "Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift?" David ventured in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane's house with the scarf in his hand, I felt a burst of pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane—a scarf to keep warm and for David a taste of happiness of giving.

Love and Healing
Nelda was 23 years old and pregnant with her third daughter during the Great Depression. They were living in a poor western town with hard-packed dirt roads, which were lined with desert flowers that somehow managed to push up through the cracked clay.
Her husband found work on the Hoover Dam hanging from ropes with a hundred-pound drill. He died on the job. Nelda got the news two days later and sunk into a deep sorrow that would resurface throughout her life. With three small girls to take care of she worked as a mail postmaster at the small-town office that doubled as a general store. Once in a while, neighbors would drop off bits of their harvest. It was not easy to help others in those tough periods. There wasn't a lot of time to offer comfort and sympathy; everybody was working sunup to sundown.
One day, one of Nelda's best friends suggested she ease the pain and suffering by writing to servicemen(军人)injured in the war. It was a pen pal program begun by the Red Cross. So, Nelda introduced herself, not sure what to say. Ross had been in the Marine Corps in Canada. While working on a boiler, the thing exploded and injured his leg. He'd walk with a limp the rest of his life. He received Nelda's letter while recovering in Vancouver. And that's how it began.。
