The reasons why teacher’s status is low in the present society are complex. No matter how “s acred (神圣)” a profession is, there are certainly some black sheep in it. They are the ones who have spoilt the good reputation of teachers.
Another reason is that eastern traditional virtues and manners are being destroyed. Thus, students no longer pay great respect to their teachers.
It could also be due to the little chance of promotion that the teaching profession
offers. This directly affects the quality of teachers. In the eyes of the public, teachers are those who graduated with average or even poor results while those who come out with flying colors are always unwilling to teach.
The declin e of teacher’s status has some connection with their success in education and education has much to do with the future of the nation and individuals. Therefore, it is our immediate task to upgrade the teacher’s status.

Margaret Murdock’s father was a Kansas state rifle (步枪) champion, so both she and her sister took up the sport. When Murdock attended Kansas State in the early 1960s, by competing on the men’s rifle team, she won her varsity letter, an award earned in the United States for excellence in school activities.
In 1976 she became the first woman to represent the U.S. on its Olympic shooting team. At the end of the small-bore three position competition, Murdock was tied with Lanny Bassham, the team captain. Bassham requested a tie-breaking shoot-off, but Olympic rules forbade it; instead, Bassham was awarded the gold medal because he had scored three “100s” to Murdock’s two.
During the medal ceremony, Lanny pulled Margaret up from the silver pedestal (台) to stand with him during the national anthem to indicate that she deserved the gold as much as he.
To real cyclists, 100-mile events are kid stuff. They consider events like the Race Across America (RAAM)—a 2,950 mile cross-country ride—to be a real competition.
Seana Hogan of San Jose, California, has won the female division of RAAM an amazing six times, and her finish times in each case usually placed her in the top 15 finishers overall.
Cycling in this event requires about 20 hours of continuous pedaling per day, up hills (a combined total of about 82,000 feet of climbing), down valleys and in all weather.
Hogan holds the record for the San Francisco to Los Angeles race (beating even the best men’s time) and was the overall winner of the 1995 Furnace Creek 508, which runs from Valencia through Death Valley to Twentynine Palms.

There are all sorts of good sensible reasons to avoid getting angry. Not only does it make us feel bad, it also makes us do stupid things without noticing the
risks and it can be self-destructive (毁灭性的). 71 But like all emotions, anger
has its purposes, which can be used for good effects.
Anger is a motivating force.
In fact anger itself is a kind of positive energy and a powerful motivating force.
72 When we see something as beneficial, we want it more when we are angry. So,
when used right, constructive anger can make us feel strong and powerful and help
push us on to get what we want.
73
It may sound like a strange thing to say, but angry people have something in
common with happy people. That’s because both tend to expect favorable results.
By comparison those experiencing more fear are more pessimistic (悲观的) about the
future and expect further terrors.
Anger can benefit relationships.
Society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it. The problem is that
when we hide our anger, our part ner doesn’t know he’s done something wrong.
And so he keeps doing it.
74 The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution, can
actually benefit and strengthen relationships.
Anger provides self-understanding.
Anger can also provide understanding into ourselves, if we allow it. Getting
angry leads to a positive outcome. Anger help discover our own faults. If we can
notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives.
75
A. Anger reduces violence.
B. Anger can encourage self-change.
C. Angry people are more optimistic.
D. And that doesn’t do our relationship any good.
E. That’s because it’s a very strong social signal that a situation needs to
be solved.
F. Most of us treat our anger as though it’s unreasonable, unshowable and unmentionable.
G. Anger can turn us on and thus push on towards our goals in the face of problems
and barriers.

to clean up the canteen the next day.
M: It’s interesting. Why do they make such a rule?
W: It’s said that every day the canteen deals with a large amount of wasted food.
In order to reduce the waste and encourage us to save food, they carry out such
a rule.

W: Hello.
M: Hi, Sally. It’s me, Tom. I’m calling to talk about Young People’s Film Week.
It starts next Monday. Would you like to see any of the films? Perhaps we could go together.
W: Great! Well, my friends mentioned that the new Harry Potter film was exciting, so I’d like to see that.
M: Me, too. I’m planning to go and see it at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
W: OK, I’ll go with you. I also want to see High School Musical. It will be on at 4:36 p.m. on Tuesday.
M: My sis ter said that it was really boring so I’d rather see Shrek. I think it’s showing on Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Do you want to come?
W: I can’t. Saturday is my mother’s birthday. We’re going to have a big lunchtime party for her. What’s on later?
M: Teen Detectives is on at 8:30 p.m. The newspaper reported that it was good. It will last for two hours. Is it too late for you?
W: A bit, but I’ll ask my father to come and pick me up. If he agrees, then I’ll go. I heard it’s really funny.
M: OK. Hope you can come.

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children and cleaning houses. Or, job searchers can look in the newspapers. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.
Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. People in more than seven hundred cities around the world can use the Internet to buy things, meet people or find jobs.
Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help for finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do.
Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.。
