Moksh Jawa, 16, a junior student in Washington High School in the US, has already bee a hero among students. As a seventh-grader, he studied on the Internet and taught himself programming. As a high school freshman, he passed the AP puter Science A exam with a 5, the highest score possible. Because his high school didn’t teach programming, he developed his own online course and helped classmates get through it.
Everything he did came from his interest. “I just fell in love with puter science.”Jawa said. Alone the way, he encouraged classmates to learn programming, too.
Trying to make the knowledge easy for anyone to learn on the internet, Jawa set about creating his own online course, with easy-to-follow lessons and invisible hands writing formulas(公式) on a board. He included quizzes and tests too.
The course has so far attracted 3,200 students across the Unites Stated and
in 120 countries including China, Ukraine and Algeria. It shows, Jawa said, the huge need for programming lessons.
When vedio lecturing, “I deliver it like I’m talking from one high school student to another,” Jawa said, “It’s always great to make it as clear and fun as possible, and to try to keep my voice as energetic as possible.”
He does that, too, when teaching members of the puter science club he founded at Washington.
“He’s pretty amazing,” said Bob Moran, headmaster of Washington High School, who saw him lead the club. “He was just a fantastic teacher, clear, organized and entertaining. When a student got the right answer, he would throw them a piece of candy.”
24. Which can be the main reason for Jawa creating the online course?
A. He has a great interest in teaching.
B. The online teaching can make him a hero.
C. He wants to help his classmates and others to learn the subject.
D. There is a huge need for programming lessons around the world.
25. Wh at do we know about Jawa’s online lessons?
A.They are hard to understand.
B.They’ve attracted learners around the world.
C.They are taught in different languages.
D. They are easy and fun without quizzes and tests.
26. What the headmaster said in the last paragraph shows that ______.
A. Jawa has always been a great club leader
B. Jawa is a hero in Washington High School
C. Jawa is very good at puter programming
D. Jawa knows how to teach and encourage students

Not all awards are as honorable as the Nobel Prize, which is world-famous for giving prizes to people who made progress in literature(文学), science, and—perhaps most importantly—peace. Even though most countries have a system for recognizing, honoring and rewarding people who have done something good in their countries, there are now hundreds of awards and awards ceremonies for all kinds of things.
The Oscars are probably the most famous, a time for the film industry to tell itself how good it is. It’s not only films—now there are also Grammies, Brits and the MTV awards for music. The Turner Prize is an award for a British artist—
each year it causes controversy by giving lots of money to artists who do things like displaying their beds, putting animals in glass cases or — this year —building a garden shed. People began to wonder whether these works were worth the huge prize!
Awards are not only for the arts. There are now awards for Sports Personality of the Year, for European Footballer of the year and World Footballer of the Year. This seems very strange— sometimes awards can be good to give the honor to people who deserve it, or to help people who don’t make a lot of money carry on their work without worrying about finances, but professional soccer players these days certainly aren’t short of money!
Why have all these awards and ceremonies appeared recently? Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens. Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored(赞助) by big organizations or panies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award who benefits—but also the sponsors.
For many people, it seems to be a “win-win” situation, with e veryone being happy, but let me ask you a question — how far do you think that publicity(宣传) and marketing are winning here, and how much real honor of achievement is
taking place?
27. Which of the following award will the author recognize as honorable?
A. The Nobel Prize
B. The Turner Prize
C. The Oscars
D. World Footballer of the Year
28. Which of the follow statements does the writer may agree with?
A. Only great people like Shakespeare should be awarded.
B. Not all awards and prizes go to people who deserve it.
B. Awards should be given to people with money problems.
C. Organizations and panies should stay away from awards ceremonies.
29. What does the underlined word “controversy” in paragraph 2 p robably mean?
A. prizes
B. losses
C. agreements
D. arguments
30. The writer believes the awards should be given to ______.
A. praise the winners
B. reward people with unusual talents
C. improve marketing
D. honor the real achievements

The Golden Gate Bridge has been called one of the world’s most beautiful bridges. 31 Experts say about 9 million people visit the bridge each year. They say more than 1,000 million vehicles have used the bridge since it opened almost 80 years ago.
The bridge has always been painted the color called “International Orange”. The color was chosen because it went well with the natural surroundings. 32 But the Golden Bridge was not named for its orange color. 33 People living in the area needed another way to get to the city besides the small ferry boats.
The chief engineer for the project was Joseph Strauss. Work began in 1933. Mr. Strauss demanded the strongest safety protections in the history of bridge building. A special safety net was hung under the bridge. This net saved the lives of 19 men during the construction. 34
The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937. It extends 1,280 meters across the water. 35 That is when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge opened in New York City.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their apartment to see what was happening, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mrs. Hanson. Jane began banging on Mrs. Hanson’s door but got no answer. Hello and wele to Book Talk. Today I’m going to talk about a couple of books you can read during the holidays. I have three suggestions for you this week. First, if you enjoy reading science fiction, there’s an exciting new book by Alan Cooper called Shallow Earth. It takes place in the future where Earth has almost been destroyed. The main characters are a group of soldiers who are fighting to save the Earth from total disaster. If you like something romantic, that’s Give Me Shelter, by Kathleen Wang. It’s a historical novel set in China, and tells a story of two teenagers growing up in Shanghai in the 1930s. They decided to run away together after the families tired to stop them seeing each other. Finally that’s Jump For The Stars, a biography of one of Houston Rocket’s
most popular players Tracy McGrady. Find out how he started his NBA career, who had the greatest effect on his life, and how he’s made his fortune by doing what he loves. That’s all for Book Talk this week. See you next week and keep reading.
