A
My wife Hilary andI were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we saw a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.
Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!" An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. Thebear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod(三脚架)in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew 1 would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back towards-the forest, before returning for another attack the first time I felt panic.
Obviously satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I'm proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.
1. How did the writer feel when faced with the brown bear?
A. Fearful but confident.
B. Nervous but brave.
C. Upset but determined.
D. Awful but hopeful.
2. The bear finally went away after it
A. got injured
B. felt safe
C. found some food
D. took away the camera
3. What does the author want to tell us?
A. We should keep calm when troubles come
B. We should rise to the challenge when faced with difficulties.
C. We should not risk ourselves in some dangerous areas.
D. We should learn to take advantage of anything at hand when in trouble.
B
The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the shore hike from camp. To our left, snow-covered mountains disappear into clouds that seem almost close enough to touch. On the plain in front of us, we can just make out a herd of graceful animals. This is why we stay here.
Tibetan antelopes live mainly on the plains of Tibet. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I'm struck by their beauty. I'm also reminded of the danger they are in. They are being hunted illegally for their valuable fur.
My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a safe place for the animals and plants of northwestern Tibet. To Zhaxi, protecting the wildlife is a way of life. “We're not trying to save the animals,” he says. “Actually, we're trying to save ourselves.”
In the 1980s and 1990s the population of Tibetan antelopes dropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting antelopes to make money. Their living places were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built.
In order to save Tibetan antelopes, the Chinese government placed them under national protection. Zhaxi and volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains.
The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope wasremovedfrom the endangered species list. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection program since the threat to the Tibetan antelope has not yet disappeared. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.
4. What can we learn from Zhaxi's words in paragraph 3?
A. Protecting the animals can make money.
B. Protecting the animals is protecting ourselves.
C. He is not fond of protecting the animals.
D. The reserve is only safe for wild animals.
5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?

6. What does the underlined word “removed” in the last paragraph probably mean?

D. They will be in harmony with nature and humans.
C
Now most of the workers work from 9 am to 5 pm. However, according to the global Internet survey done by the UK Sleep Council, thesiesta(午睡)was the right idea all along. The UK Sleep Council called on the country'sbosses to end nine-to-five working in favor of more flexible hours. They believe what would really increase the workers' productivity is a nice afternoon nap, rather than those bonuses.
Forty-one percent of the 12,000 people who responded to the council's survey said they were most productive in the morning, while 38 percent said theyhit their stridein the evening. "This means most of them cannot fully pay attention to what they do in the middle of the day," said sleep expert Dr. Chris Idzikowskii. "We must conclude from this survey that the traditional nine-to-five working day does not suit most workers." He suggested that allowing workers to follow their natural sleeping habits would actually benefit employers by allowing them to expand their working hours and be more productive.
Fortunately, being a college lecturer, I don't have to go to work everyday. I only work three days a week, but during the three days I work really long hours and have no time for a little siesta. I'm usually so tired and sleepy in the afternoon, which really affects thevitality(活力)of my classes.
I think Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea is worthwhile. When people have flexible working hours they could reach their highest productivity. On top of that, flexible working hours mean thatpeople don't have to work all at the same time. That way we could avoid traffic jams. Therefore, it's really killing two birds with one stone!
8. What can improve the workers' productivity, according to the UK Sleep Council?
A. More bonuses.
B. The flexible working time.
C. Working for long hours.
D. Working in a relaxing way.
9. What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Were most sleepy.
B. Were most flexible.
C. Worked at their own pace.
D. Worked at their best.
10. What did the UK Sleep Council's survey find?
A. Few people are suitable to work at noon.
B. People are more productive in the morning.
C. Some people like to expand their working hours.
D. More and more people prefer to work in the evening.
11. Why does the author support Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea?
A. It could solve most of the traffic problems.
B. He finds Dr. Chris Idzikowskii respectable.
C. He thinks the idea can benefit the society.
D. It allows him to work for fewer hours.
D
The year 2020 will mark the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. The traditional retirement age is 65. One might therefore expect peak retirement. By continuing to work, and staying socially engaged, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives.
The yold are more numerous, healthier and wealthier than previous generations of seniors. The yold are busier, too. In short, the yold are not just any group of old people. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren. That will influence consumer, service and financial markets.
The over-60s are one of the fastest-growing groups of customers of the airline business. The yold are vital to the tourism industry because they spend much more, when taking a foreign holiday, than younger adults.
But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change, under pressure from the yold themselves. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that the old ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Then, government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work. The effective retirement age (the age at which people actually leave the workforce) is usually even lower. Third, higher numbers of healthy yold people will require drastic changes in health spending. Most diseases of ageing are bestmetwith
prevention and lifestyle changes. But only about 2%~3% of most countries’ health-care spending goes on prevention. That will have to rise, because although the yold will constitute a bulge of comparative health and activity over the next decade, by 2030 they will hit 75 and enter a long period of decline for which few rich countries are ready.
12. What kind of people are the yold exactly?
A. They are workaholics.
B. They are full of energy.
C. They enjoy being focused on.
D. They like staying socially engaged.
13. Why do the yold contribute to tourist industry?
A. They like traveling more.
B. They have more money.
C. They consume more on travel.
D. They have much free time.
14. What’s the author’s attitude toward health-care spending on prevention?
A. Unsatisfied.
B. Subjective.
C. Neutral.
D. Active.
15. What does the underlined word “met” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. dealt with
B. come across
C. satisfied
D. experienced.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs — one for Dad, one for Mom, and one for me. In the cellar (地窖), the very last jar of apple jam lay quietly on the shelf, waiting to be turned into an apple pie when Dad came back. Mom sat at one end of the table. I sat in the middle between her and Dad. I tried not to look at Dad’s empty place. Dad had gone to the city to look for work for a long time.
Every night, I lay awake in bed and waited for the train to stop. Waited to hear the creaky (嘎吱作响的) gate Dad’s going to fix when he came home. Waited to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the
kitchen door, and his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Mom made from empty flour sacks (麻布袋).
Every night, Mom came to kiss me good-night — after the train’s gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your dad will be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
Time dragging by, it finally came the day before Thanksgiving. I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
Early the next morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Dad lifted me onto his shoulders and pretended to stagger from my weight. “How’s my boy? You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR — I knew that word. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Dad whistled admiringly and winked at me. Mom and I had been practicing my letters most days. I could see that Mom was pleased with me. “I’m going to bake a pie for your dad’s homecoming dinner. Jimmy, bring me that jar of apple jam from the shelf in the cellar.” Mom smiled at me.
