The sight of desperate and often destitute refugeescontinue to dominate TV news reports. In Brazillater this year, refugees will be shown in a different ar ena. The International Olympic Committee says anumber of them will be cho sen to make up a special athletics team. The story from our sports news corr espondent Alex Capstick.
The scale of the worldwide refugee crisis which numbers 20 million according to the UN was theimpetus for the IOC to set in motion plans for a team of thi s year’s Games made up entirely of displaced persons.
43 candidates have been identified although the final figure will probablybe somewhere between five and ten. They’ll compete under the Olympic flag a nd will marchout to the opening ceremony as the penultimate squad ahead o f the host nation.
I’m proud to receive refugees and we have a place on the village, on Olympic village. We areready for this and I think we’ll be great for the universality of the Games.
The head of the IOC Thomas Bach said they wanted to send a message of ho pe to all migrantsin the world. As well as sporting ability, those selected must be verified as refugees by theUnited Nations. Two of the contenders include a Syrian swimmer living in Germany and aCongolese judo competitor in Brazil . Alex Capstick reporting.
Now hundreds of endangered species are being traded on Facebook groups i n Malaysia in whatcampaigners are warning could be part of a new global tre nd. The undercover investigationwas carried out by the pressure group Traffi c which monitors the illegal trade in wildlife. Itfound certain exotic animals
were particularly highly priced. Our environmentcorrespondent will show me Traffic’s photographs of some of the animals.
There are things like sun bears which are small shy vulnerable creatures ext remely endangered, a white handed gibbon which is a very small baby gibbon. The idea is that they are selling these pets live, selling them as pets essentia lly. There arearound 68,000 people involved in these groups. And the thing t hey were most concerned about was the question of speed. You know, the pe ople where taking the pictures. They weregoing up on Facebook very quickly and the transactions were happening very quickly as well. Awhite handed gib bon is so small, but it’s extremely endangered. And if people are selling the monline like this, it doesn’t all go well for their future. Across the world, vario us governments andvarious campaigning bodies have been trying to cut down the poaching of elephants. They’vetried to cut down traditional markets. W hat they are afraid of is the development of newmarkets.
