Americans love dogs, all types of dogs: small dogs, big dogs, lapdogs(供玩赏的小狗). Each year, people spend billions of dollars on their four-legged pals, making sure the lovable dogs have enough food to eat and lots of toys to play with.
Dogs love people, too. They lick their faces, protect their homes. Where did these four-legged companions come from? Some scientists believe that they have found the answer.
Scientists have long known that dogs evolved from wolves. Exactly when the transformation from wolf to dog actually took place, however, remains a mystery.
Some said dogs evolved as a separate species 135,000 years ago in two parts of the world. One group of dogs developed in Europe and Asia from Asian wolves. The other group evolved in North, Central, and South America from American wolves.
Now researchers say those theories are wrong. New studies suggest that domesticated dogs first appeared 15,000 years ago in eastern Asia. Scientists also say that every modern dog descended from approximately five female Asian wolves, the mother of all modern dogs.
Scientists suspect dogs first set paws in North America by following settlers across a land bridge that once linked northern Asia and North America.

People who are hit by lightning and survive often have long-term effects. These may include memory loss, sleep disorders, muscle pain and depression.
Experts tell people to seek the safety of a building or a hard-top vehicle any time they hear thunder, even if it is not raining. They say lighting can strike as far as sixteen kilometers from any rainfall. Lighting can travel sideways. And at least ten percent of lightning happens without any clouds overhead that you can see.
People who are outdoors should make sure they are not the tallest thing around. Bend low to the ground, but do not lie down. And do not stand near a tree or any tall object. Get away from water and anything made of metal. A car is safe, but do not touch any metal inside.
Safety experts say people in buildings should stay away from anything with wires or pipes that lead to the outside. The National Weather Service says if you plan to disconnect any electronic equipment, do so before the storm arrives. Do not use a wired telephone. Do not use water. All these can carry electricity.
Some people think a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge(电荷)afterward. Experts say this is not true. It is safe to begin emergency treatment.
Each year about four hundred people in the United States are struck by lightning. Last year forty-four people died. The average is close to seventy. The National Weather Service says that is more than the number of people killed by severe storms.
59.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

B.Lightning won’t do harm to people’s health.

Who are these people rushing by you in the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American” is really not true.
In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives such as schools, businesses, and sports, but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This “side-by-side”living has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from each other. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.
63.More than 215 million people call America “home” because .
A.they have their houses there
B.they want to make their home there
C.they have settled there now
D.they like that land very much
64.“Side-by-side” living style means “”.
A.to keep their own customs while sharing American ones in certain areas
B.to make friends with native people
C.groups of people living near each other
D.having more freedom to choose one’s own living style
65.From the passage we can learn that . A .people from other countries don ’t want a change
B .the advantages coming from the variety of cultures make life in America colorful
C .people from other countries have to face the society they are not familiar with
D .once strangers settled in the United States, they would lose the customs and cultures of their original countries.
66.Which might be the best title for this passage? A .Living in America —Good or Bad? B .Different Customs and Cultures C .America —Home for the People D .”Side-by-side ” Living Style in America

Over many years there has been an increase in the population of towns in many countries, as millions of people have moved from the villages in search of better jobs and facilities, in the hope of getting a higher standard of living. This development has led to huge expansion of towns both upwards into the sky and outwards into the surrounding countryside. In spite of all the efforts of movements and private business, many areas still suffer from a serious shortage of housing.
Now, a new idea has been put forward which will make use of areas which have no other obvious commercial potential. These are the small lakes, disused docks and other areas of water, many of which can be found near, or even in the suburbs of big town.
A new style of construction has been designed which will provide a house for less than half the cost of the normal building. The main saving is ,of course, the land. Because the new houses will float on water. There will be no need for foundation; instead the house will be built on a frame made of steel which is expected to cost about $5,000. Above this the builders will make a house with two, three or four bedrooms and all the usual modern conveniences, as well as a roof garden. Each house will be joined to the main services supplying water gas and electricity and they will have a vacuum sewage disposal(真空污水处理)system. All the service links will have enough flexibility(灵活性)allow for small differences in the water level caused by wet and dry periods of weather.
The first house to be built are expected to cost between $20,000 and $30,000 according to size and it is already clear that there is a very good potential market for the new system. As the cost is comparatively low, young people and common citizens would like to buy.
72.So many people have moved into towns chiefly because .
A.they hope to enjoy the basic facilities
B.they expect to live a better life
C.they want to contribute to the development of towns
D.there is a shortage of jobs in villages
73.What is the main advantage of the new idea?
A.It will help solve the housing shortage problem.
B.It will make use of areas of water.
C.It will provide jobs.
D.It will help develop the suburbs.
74.The new houses will be built on .
A.waterside areas B.a store foundation
C.lakes and rivers D.a steel frame
75.The price of the new house will .
A.encourage private and government builders
B.attract ordinary people in the towns to buy
C.vary in different areas according to the policy
D.benefit the housing market in the countryside

书面表达(满分25分;possible version)
People should not be encouraged to use plastic bags
Plastic bags are very popular in our daily life. People go shopping with plastic bags in free markets, super markets, or departments.
But plastic bags are one of the major pollutants. We can see littered plastic bags thrown everywhere, especially along the railways or highways, in the parks or in the rivers. Because plastics is not degradable, once it is thrown in the environment, it will exist for a long time and pollute soil and water. They are even dangerous to wildlife as thousands of sea animals are killed each year when they eat or are choked by plastic bags. What’s more, “white pollution” creates a bad image for China.
So government should make law to forbid the use of plastic bags in department stores and supermarkets. Meanwhile, people should be encouraged to replace them with paper bags or cloth bags.。
