Report and Technical Writing--ResumeDefinitionA resume is a short written account of one’s education and previous job that one sends to an employer whenlooking for a job.It is an important tool careering as it helps make an initial impression on the potential employer It is a brief summary of one’s life history or the main events of his/her life, and it gives a brief, factual summary your qualification beginning with the writer’s birth and followed by a list of his/her education backgroun d, work perience, professional accomplishments and hobbies, while a resume cover letter explains your qualification to show well u can fit in the position.II. Types (or formats) of resumeYour resume format could make a considerable difference to the information that a reader derives. Keep in mindThere is no correct or standard resume formatYour resume format should be appropriate to your positionYour chosen resume format must not be seen as a method of concealing informationYou must follow a consistent format in all sections of your resumeThe following resume types (formats) are provided for the writer to choose1.Basic format(基本型): It contains the most basic information such as education experience as well页脚内容1as general personal information. It is the ideal format chosen by students who has had no work experience2.Chronological format(经历型): It is arranged in the order of time. More appropriately it is arranged in the reverse time order as you list the most recent education attainment and work experience first. This format is by far the most popular kind of format. Aspiring business majors looking for a job should use this format, unless they have worked in a wide variety of functional areas.3.Functional format(功能型): It is based on certain particular skills for a prospective job. It presentsa good perspective on what you can do rather than on when you did it. Business students wanting to show highly diverse work experience should choose this format.bination format(混合型): Purely functional resume is not popular anymore. Many people prefer to use a combination of functional and chronological formats instead.5.Targeted format(目标型): If you have a fairly single-tracked career so far and intend to remain on the same track, you can use this format. This means you can use language and key words that are local to your industry. A targeted format could be in the chronological format or in the functional format or a combination. Each format has various advantages and disadvantages, depending on the different background and purpose of the applicant. Applicants can add or delete some sections on the basis of the one of the above formats to design a very individual and special resume.III.Tips for writing a good resumeMost employers are busy people who normally just glance at a resume for only 10 to 20 seconds. They have got no time to read your resume. In other words, your resume is scanned, not read. So one’s resume must页脚内容2sufficiently catch their attention to pass the 10 to 20 second evaluation test. A resume must follow four basic principles for effectiveness1.Catch the reader’s (employer’s) attention2.P ersuade the reader of your benefits or value3.C onvince the reader with evidence4.M ove the reader to acquire the productTo follow these principles, a good resume should be effective in three aspects:1)Content (内容)a.C learly communicate your competence in relation to the employer’s needsThe information offered in the resume should be closely related to the objective. Try to convince the employer that you are the right person for the job and you can solve their problemsb.M ake statements with facts and figuresApplicants should keep in mind that facts and figures are more convincing than lots of statements of accomplishments. Try not to make statements you can’t document.c.Avoid exaggerationThe Chinese way of modesty will not be necessary, but honesty and integrity will still be adhered to.Exaggeration on a resume cannot be a lifelong tactic in job hunting. Be honest. That is the best policy.d.E xclude the irrelevant data and negative information页脚内容3All the information offered by a resume should be related to the work objective and communicate a positive image of the applicant.2)L anguage (语言)a.E asy to understandLanguage should be direct, concise, and expressive. Do not use lengthy sentences and wordy descriptions. Jargons should be avoided. Phrases and incomplete sentences are preferable to long complex sentences.b.K eep consistentDo not change verb tense. Try to use the same kind of phrases and structures.c.Positively toned rather than negatively tonedInstead of saying “never failed”, say “always did well”, or “always managed to”.d.D o not refer to oneself as “I”Too many “I’s” will leave an impression of being ego-centered. In today’s business world, the quality of team workmanship is very much valued as that means cooperation, communicativeness and coordination. Instead of saying “I am very communicative and performed well”, one would better use a phrase “communicative and with good performance”. Now you can see why phrases are preferable in resume writing now—not only because of the briefness but also the efficiency.e.Do check spelling, grammar, and punctuation carefully3)L ayout (编排设计)页脚内容4a.S trongest point firstb.M aintain an eye-pleasing balancec.Do not make the resume cramped and crowdedUse ample spaces and highlights for achieving a neat appearance and an impression of being well organized and professional.d.G et it properly sizedOne page is the ideal length for a resume. If you produce a two-page resume, one of the best formats is to attach a single supplemental page to a self-contained one-page resume.IV. Component sections of a resume1)Contact information and work objective2)Education (degrees majors, schools, dates, highlights, major courses, special training)3)Work experience (including job titles, employers, dates, skills, accomplishments, duties andresponsibilities)4)Skills/Qualifications5)Honors and awards6)Other information7)References (two to three references: their names, positions, addresses, telephone numbersand E-mails)页脚内容58)Personal data (gender, age, marital status, place of birth, height, weight, health)9)Personal strength (positive personality, willingness to relocate/travel. This means you can use language and key words thatare local to your industry.A targeted format could be in the chronological format or in thefunctional format or a combination. Each format has various advantages and disadvantages, depending on the different backgroundand purpose of the applicant. Applicants can add or delete some sections on the basis of the oneof the above formats to design a very individual and special resume.III.Tips for writing a good resumeMost employers are busy people who normally just glance at a resume for only 10 to 20 seconds. They have got no time to read your resume. In other words, your resume is scanned, not read. Soone’s resume must sufficiently catch their attention to pass the 10 to 20 second evaluati on test. A resume must follow four basic principles for effectiveness1.Catch the reader’s (employer’s) attention2.Persuade the reader of your benefits or value3.Convince the reader with evidence4.Move the reader to acquire the productTo follow these principles, a good resume should be effective in three aspects:1)Content (内容)a.Clearly communicate your competence in relation to the employer’s needsThe information offered in the resume should be closely related to the objective. Try to convince the employer that you are the right person for the joband you can solve their problemsb.Make statements with facts and figuresApplicants should keep in mind that facts and figures are more convincing than lots of statements of accomplishments. Try not to make statements youcan’t document.c.Avoid exaggerationThe Chinese way of modesty will not be necessary, but honesty and integrity will still be adhered to. Exaggeration on a resume cannot be a lifelongtactic in job hunting. Be honest. That is the best policy.d.Exclude the irrelevant data and negative informationAll the information offered by a resume should be related to the work objective and communicate a positive image of the applicant.2)Language (语言)a.Easy to understandLanguage should be direct, concise, and expressive. Do not use lengthy sentences andwordy descriptions. Jargons should be avoided. Phrases and incomplete sentences arepreferable to long complex sentences.b.Keep consistentDo not change verb tense. Try to use the same kind of phrases and structures.c.Positively toned rather than negatively tonedInstead of saying “never failed”, say “always did well”, or “alwaysmanaged to”.d.Do not refer to oneself as “I”Too many “I’s” will leave an impression of being ego-centered. In today’s businessworld, the quality of team workmanship is very much valued as that meanscooperation, communicativeness and coordination. Instead of saying “I am verycommunicative and performed well”, one would better use a phrase “communicativeand with good performance”. Now you can see why phrases are preferable in resumewriting now—not only because of the briefness but also the efficiency.e.Do check spelling, grammar, and punctuation carefully3)Layout (编排设计)a.Strongest point firstb.Maintain an eye-pleasing balancec.Do not make the resume cramped and crowdedUse ample spaces and highlights for achieving a neat appearance and animpression of being well organized and professional.d.Get it properly sizedOne page is the ideal length for a resume. If you produce a two-page resume, one ofthe best formats is to attach a single supplemental page to a self-contained one-pageresume.IV. Component sections of a resume1)Contact information and work objective2)Education (degrees majors, schools, dates, highlights, major courses, special training)3)Work experience (including job titles, employers, dates, skills, accomplishments, dutiesand responsibilities)4)Skills/Qualifications5)Honors and awards6)Other information7)References (two to three references: their names, positions, addresses, telephonenumbers and E-mails)8)Personal data (gender, age, marital status, place of birth, height, weight, health)9)Personal strength (positive personality, willingness to relocate/travel. My name is HIN RESUME. I was born on August 25, 1985, in Hengyang, Hunan Province. In 1990 I graduated from Harbin Technical Institute where I majored in electronic engineering, and then I was assigned to work in an electronic apparatus factory as a technician for nine years. During this period I gained some practical experience in designing and manufacturing several varieties of electronic apparatus. In the fall of 1983, I was admitted to the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University as a graduate student. Six months before I took the examinations, I started to study higher algebra and analysis by myself in my leisure time. Since the enrollment I have completed all the courses required by the graduate program, making straight A both in my undergraduate and graduate courses. My performance in the graduate seminars of Differential Calculus and Mathematical and Physical Formulas shows that I have got a good grasp of the fundamentals of mathematics. I have been studying English intensively for six months. I have attended an English class taught by an American professor. Ms. Kathy Swift, from the City University of New York. According to her, within a few weeks of my arrival abroad, I should have no difficulty either in functioning on a daily basis or in participating fully in graduate studies. Presently I am interested in applied mathematics and later I would like to do research in control theory. If I am accepted as a graduate student. I plan to stay for 2-5 years pursuing a Ph.d. degree. I am sure I would make progress in my future career.。

Make it easy for others to read it. If it’s a headache to look at, chances are it won’t be read. 易读、一目了然、让人看了舒服Choose a standard black Times New Roman or Arial font in 9 to 12 point size against a white background. 用常规的标准字体,比如Times New Roman 或者Arial, 9到12号的字体大小、白底You may choose a different font type or bigger font size for your name, pany, and job positions held, but make sure to be consistent. Don’t go overboard with additional formatting such as bold, italics, and underlining. 你的名字、曾经的职位可以用其它字体或字体大小来突出,但是注意保持一致性,不要混用多种不同的字体和大小② Experience first 把工作经验放在教育背景前面Unless you recently graduated, your experience matters more than the college you attended. List your education after your relevant work experience. 除非你是应届毕业生③ Reduce jargon 减少术语Don’t assume that someone with expertise in your field will be reading your resume. 读你简历的人不一定都了解你的行业和专业Avoid terms that people outside of your industry wouldn’t understand. 所以最好减少专业术语的使用④ Never refer to yourself in the first person 不要用第一人称Drop the “I” from your resume. 简历里千万不要出现”I”Instead of saying “I managed a team of 50 people”, “I increa sed sales by 50%”, simply remove “I” from your sentences. 只要在句子里去掉”I”就可以了⑤ Eliminate meaningless phrases 去掉空话、废话These generic phrases don’t actually mean much.Take out clichés like “customer-oriented,”“excellent municator,” “team player,”“hard working,” and “motivated.” 没错,这些简历爱用词都是千篇一律的空话、废话。
