For available screening options, refer to device screening table in the data sheet.ApplicationsThe ATS Series DC/DC converters are a family of 25W,single and dual output, high reliability devices designed for rugged environments and extended temperature operations such as those encountered in military, aerospace and industrial applications. The converters are in full compliant with CE03 and CS01 of MIL-STD-461C. Features include small size, low weight and conservative component stress de-rating. For operations in radiation environments, the M3L series with the identical form factor and electrical rating is recommended. All models include an external inhibit port and have an adjustable output voltage. They are enclosed in a hermetic 1.5" x 2.3" x .425" steel package and weight less than 85grams. The package utilizes rugged ceramic feed-thru copper core pins and is sealed using parallelseam welding.ATSn Military Aircraftn Commercial Aircraft n Missilesn Ground EquipmentPD-97221AATS-SERIESThe ATS Series converters utilize a single-ended forward topology with resonant reset. The nominal switching frequency is 500KHz. Electrical isolation and tight output regulation are achieved through the use of a magnetically coupled feedback. Voltage feed-forward with duty factor limiting provides high line rejection and protection against output over voltage in the event of an internal control loop failure. This mechanism limits the maximum output voltage to approximately 20% over the nominal regardless of the line voltage.Circuit DescriptionAn internal EMI filter allows the converter to meet the conducted emissions requirements of MIL-STD-461C on the input power leads. A single-stage output filter reduces the typical output ripple to less than 50mV peak-to-peak. Output current is limited under any load fault condition to approximately 125% of rated. An overload condition causes the converter output to behave like a constant current source with the output voltage dropping below nominal. The converter will resume normal operation when the load current is reduced below the current limit point. This protects the converter from both overload and short circuit conditions. The current limit point exhibits a slightly negative temperature coefficient to reduce the possibility of thermal runaway. An external inhibit port is provided to control converter operation. The converter’s operation is inhibited when this pin is pulled low. It is designed to be driven by an open collector logic device. The pin may be left open for normal operation and has a nominal open circuit voltage of 10.5V with respect to the input return (pin 2). The output voltage of all models can be adjusted using a single external resistor.3ATS-SERIES1 Meets derating per MIL-STD-9752For operation at +125°C see table note 13Electrical Performance CharacteristicsFor Notes to Electrical Performance Characteristics Table, refer to page 5LimitsParameterGroup A SubgroupConditions -55°C ≤ T C ≤ +85°C V IN = 28V DC ± 5%, C L = 0 unless otherwise specifiedMin NomMaxUnit Input Voltage16 28 50 V Output Voltage ( Vout )ATS2803R3S ATS2805S ATS2812S ATS2815S ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815DATS2803R3S ATS2805S ATS2812S ATS2815S ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815D1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2,3 2,3 2,3 2,3 2,3 2,3 2,3I OUT = 100% rated loadNote 4I OUT = 100% rated loadNote 43.274.95 11.88 14.85 ±4.95 ±11.88 ±14.853.234.90 11.76 14.70 ±4.90 ±11.76 ±14.703.30 5.00 12.00 15.00 ±5.00 ±12.00 ±15.003.33 5.05 12.12 15.15 ±5.05 ±12.12 ±15.153.37 5.10 12.24 15.30 ±5.10 ±12.24 ±15.30 V VOutput power ( P OUT )ATS2803R3S All Others 1,2,3V IN = 16, 28, 50 Volts, Note 20 020 25W Output current ( I OUT )ATS2803R3S ATS2805S ATS2812S ATS2815S ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815D 1,2,3V IN = 16, 28, 50 Volts, Note 2Either Output, Note 3 Either Output, Note 3 Either Output, Note 30 0 0 0 0 0 06.06 5.00 2.08 1.67 4.00 1.67 1.33A Line regulation ( VR LINE ) 1,2,3 V IN = 16, 28, 50 VoltsI OUT = 0, 50%, 100% rated, Note 4 -0.5 0.5 % Load regulation ( VR LOAD ) 1,2,3 I OUT = 0, 50%, 100% rated, Note 4V IN = 16, 28, 50 Volts-1.01.0 %Cross regulation ( VR CROSS )ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815D1,2,3V IN = 16, 28, 50 Volts Duals only, Note 5-5.0 -3.0 -3.05.0 3.0 3.0%ATS-SERIESElectrical Performance Characteristics ( continued )For Notes to Electrical Performance Characteristics Table, refer to page 5LimitsParameterGroup A SubgroupConditions -55°C ≤ T C ≤ +85°C V IN = 28V DC ± 5%, C L = 0 unless otherwise specifiedMinNomMaxUnitInput current, no load ( I IN )ATS2803R3S ATS2805S ATS2812S ATS2815S ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815D 1,2,3I OUT = 0, Pin 4 open60 70 70 70 70 100 100mA Input current inhibited 1,2,3 Pin 4 shorted to pin 28.0 mA Output ripple ( V RIP )ATS2803R3S ATS2805S ATS2812S ATS2815S ATS2805D ATS2812D ATS2815D 1,2,3V IN = 16, 28, 50 Volts I OUT = 100% rated loadNotes 4, 635 50 70 80 80 80 80mV p-pSwitching frequency ( F S ) 1,2,3 Sync. Output Power of up to 5 watts is avail-able.Connecting the inhibit pin (pin 5) to the input common (pin 7) will cause the converter to shut down. It is rec-ommended that the inhibit pin be driven by an open collector device capable of sinking at least 400µA. The open circuit voltage of the inhibit pin is 11.5 ±0.5 volts. These converters are manufactured in a facility fully qualified to MIL-PRF-38534. All processes used to manufacture these converters have been qualified thereby enabling Advanced Analog to deliver fully com-pliant devices. Three standard temperature grades are offered with the screening options. Refer to Screening Level section. The CH grade converters are fully com-pliant to MIL-PRF-38534 for class H. The HB grade converters are processed with the same screening as the CH grade, but do not have class H element evalua-tion as required by MIL-PRF-38534. These two grades are fully tested and operate over the full military tem-perature range without derating of output power. A commercial grade is also available. Variations in elec-trical, mechanical and screening requirements can be accommodated. Extensive computer simulation usingcomplex modeling allows design modifications to be examined. Note 2: Fixed Version OnlyNote 3: Adjustable Version OnlyAS2815 APPLICATION HINTSThe AS2815 incorporates protection against over-current faults, reversed load insertion, over temperature operation, and positive and negative transient voltage. However, the use of an output capacitor is required in order to insure the stability and the performances.StabilityThe output capacitor is part of the regulator’s frequency compensation system. Either a 22µF aluminum electrolytic capacitor or a 10µF solid tantalum capacitor between the output terminal and ground guarantees stable operation for all operating conditions. However, in order to minimize overshoot and undershoot, and therefore optimize the design, please refer to the section ‘Ripple Rejection’.Ripple RejectionRipple rejection can be improved by adding a capacitor between the ADJ pin and ground. When ADJ pin bypassing is used, the value of the output capacitor required increases to its maximum (22µF for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, or 10µF for a solid tantalum capacitor). If the ADJ pin is not bypass, the value of the output capacitor can be lowered to 100µF for an electrolytic aluminum capacitor or 4.7µF for a solid tantalum capacitor. However the value of the ADJ-bypass capacitor should be chosen with respect to the following equation:C = 1 / ( 6.28 * F R * R1 )Where C = value of the capacitor in Farads (select an equal or larger standard value),F R= ripple frequency in Hz,R1= value of resistor R1 in Ohms.If an ADJ-bypass capacitor is use, the amplitude of the output ripple will be independent of the output voltage. If an ADJ-bypass capacitor is not used, the output ripple will be proportional to the ratio of the output voltage to the reference voltage:M = V OUT / V REFWhere M = multiplier for the ripple seen when the ADJ pin Reducing parasitic resistance and inductanceOne solution to minimize parasitic resistance and inductance is to connect in parallel capacitors. This arrangement will improve the transient response of the power supply if your system requires rapidly changing current load condition. Thermal ConsiderationAlthough the AS2815 offers some limiting circuitry for overload conditions, it is necessary not to exceed the maximum junction temperature, and therefore to be careful about thermal resistance. The heat flow will follow the lowest resistance path, which is the Junction-to-case thermal resistance. In order to insure the best thermal flow of the component, a proper mounting is required. Note that the case of the device is electrically connected to the output. In case the case has to be electrically isolated, a thermally conductive spacer can be used. However do not forget to consider its contribution to thermal resistance.Assuming:V IN = 10V, V OUT = 5V, I OUT = 1.5A, T A = 50°C/W,θHeatsink Case = 6°C/W, θHeatsink Case = 0.5°C/W, θJC = 3°C/W Power dissipation under this conditionP D = (V IN – V OUT) * I OUT = 7.5WJunction TemperatureT J = T A + P D * (θCase – HS + θHS + θJC)For Control & Power SectionsT J = 50 + 7.5*(0.5+6=3) = 121.25°C121.25°C < T J (max) for Control & Power Sections. In both case reliable operation is insured by adequate junction temperature.is optimally bypassed.V REF = Reference VoltageAS2815Basic Adjustable RegulatorOutput VoltageConsider Figure 2. The resistance R 1 generates a constant current flow, normally the specified load current of 10mA. This current will go through the resistance R 2 to set the overall output voltage. The current I ADJ is very small and constant. Therefore its contribution to the overall output voltage is very small and can generally be ignored.Load RegulationParasitic line resistance can degrade load regulation. In order not to affect the behavior of the regulator, it is best to connect directly the R 1 resistance from the resistor divider to the case, and not to the load. For the same reason, it is best to connect the resistor R 2 to the Negative side of the load.Output VoltageThe fixed voltage LDO voltage regulators are simple to use regulators since the V OUT is preset to the specifications. It isimportant however, to provide the proper output capacitance for stability and improvement. For most operating conditions a capacitance of 22uF tantalum or 100uF electrolytic will ensure stability and prevent oscillation.
