Her dad, Sgt. Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina. After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a student‟s desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, …How is she going to react?‟”he recalled the heartwarming momen t. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.” As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn‟t talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream. Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed(调动), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned this whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect. The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that he‟s home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices she‟s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and specialoccasions and celebrations. I‟ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I‟m doing good parenting.”24.How did Solymar feel at first when entering the classroom?A.She was eager to hug her father.B. She felt everything was as usual.C. She got excited at seeing her father.D. She was surprised by what she saw.25.What was Melendez‟s attitude to the surprise?A.Content.B. Astonished.C. T ouched.D. T o make up for what she lost in her growth.27.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Father‟s Selfless Love for His Daughter.B. Girl Expecting the Returning of Her DadC. Girl Surprised at School by Her Dad‟s Return.D. Father and Daughter‟s Expected ReunionCHave you ever been given something you don‟t like or doesn‟t fit, but you don‟t want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You‟re not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn‟t mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn‟t work for you. If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn‟t fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Before you do that, make sure you understand that regifting is becoming more and more common because people find it difficult to make ends meet. There are specific things you should do to an item. Failure to do any of them may create an awkward situation. You never have to lie about what you are doing, but you don‟t want to be in the position of having to explain anything. For example, removethe original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn‟t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition. When you get ready for regifting, consider having a white elephant gift exchange for your next celebration. This removes all the embarrassment of being caught regifting because that‟s the whole purpose of the event. In order to prevent hurting feelings, provide everyone with a guest list and ask them not to bring anything given by the people on that list.28.Why does the author begin the passage with a question?A.To share a hot phenomenon.B. To introduce the following part.C. To ask for readers‟answers.D. T o point out a common opinion.29.What most contributes to the growing regifting?A.People‟s lack of money.B. People‟s dislike of the gifts.C. People‟s reduced desire for gifts.D. People‟s understanding of its manners.30.What‟s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?A. What to do before regifting. B. How to make use of unwanted gifts. C. What kind of gifts to be regifted. D. Why regifting can cause embarrassment.31.What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?A.Suitable but valueless.B. Expensive and useful.C. Packaged and invaluable.D. Nice but unsuitable.DSometimes, you just can't help it. Maybe you're watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Next thing you know, you feel pressure in your throat, your eyes are watering, and you have tears running down your cheeks. Why do people cry when they areemotional? What are tears?Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions. Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology at Tilburg University,in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal(基础的)tears are the first type. They act as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex(反射作用的)tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. "These are released in response to emotional states," explains Vingerhoets, "Especially when we feel helplessness." Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. "Humans are very complex social creatures, "says Lauren Bylsma, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania. "It seems that tears serve to draw help and support from others." She says another reason we weep is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time to grow up. Vingerhoets agrees. "I think that the reason why humans cry emotional tears has to do with our prolonged (延长的)childhood," he says. "That's the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. The major advantage of emotional tears is that you can target them at a specific person." Vingerhoets says this ability to target someone could have come in handy in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals. Loud crying could attract predators(捕食者). Tears were a safer way to get attention." In this case, it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help," he says. Vingerhoets and Bylsma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Byhma, there is still much more to discover. "It's surprising," she says, "how much we still don‟t know.”32.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 1 refer to? A.Weeping tears. B.Missing a。

This amount of food, which could feed about 1.2 billion poor people, is almost a third of household (家庭的) waste. And food waste isn’t just a big problem in Scotland.Money, time, and resources are often wasted by throwing away good food. It also causes very harmful greenhouse gas, which is perilous to the planet. In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons. Supermarkets usually care about the quality of food from farms. They often refuse strange-looking and unusually sized produce. However, they seem to forget that it is almost impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption (消费) stage includes food going out of date and leftovers (剩饭) because of too much food. In households, even mostly fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away.In order to reduce food waste, here is what we can do:Understand the terms “use by” and “best before” dates. “Use by” dates are there for your safety. It is dangerous to eat food after the use-by date and doing so risks your health. “Best before” dates tell you how long the food will be at its best quality. Once the food passes the date, it isn’t necessarily bad, but you should still check, just to be sure.Every time you go shopping and bring back new food, put them at the back of your fridge and bring the foodthat will expire (到期) soon closer to the front. That way, you know what needs to be eaten first. If you have any food that will expire soon, give it to charity if you aren’t going to eat it. They will really appreciate the food you have given.4.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A.Food waste is the biggest part of household waste.B.Household waste hasn’t drawn much attention.C.People in Scotland waste the most food.D.Food waste is a common problem.5.What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Valuable.B.Dangerous.C.Different.D.Unnecessary.6.What should people do to reduce food waste according to the text?A.Pick usually sized produce.B.Improve the quality of farm produce.C.Order produce directly from farmers.D.Avoid buying too much food at a time.7.What advice does the author offer to people?A.Buy food that will expire soon to reduce waste.B.Place food carefully according to its expiry date.C.Throw away food that passes the best-before date.D.Give food that has passed its use-by date to charity.A robot created at Standford University is diving down to shipwrecks (沉船) in a way that humans can’t do. Known as OceanOneK, the robot allows its operators to feel like they’re underwater explorers, too.OceanOneK resembles (像) a human diver from the front, with arms, hands and eyes that capture the underwater world in full color. The back of the robot has computers and eight multidirectional thrusters (推进器) that help it carefully explore the sites of fragile shipwrecks. When an operator at the ocean’s surface uses controls to direct OceanOneK, the robot’s touch-based feedback system causes the person to feel the water’s resistance. The idea for OceanOneK came from a desire to study coral reefs in the Red Sea at depths beyond the normal range for divers. While OccanOneK was designed to reach maximum depths of 656 feet, researchers had a new goal:1 kilometer, hence the new name for OceanOneK. The researchers changed the robot’s body by using specialfoam to increase buoyancy (浮力) and fight the pressures of 1, 000 meters more than 100 times what humans experience at sea level. OceanOneK also got two new types of hands and increased arm and head motion.During OceanOneK’s deep dive in February, team members discovered the robot couldn’t rise when they stopped for a thruster check. Flotations on the communications and power line had collapsed, causing the line to pile on the top of the robot.OceanOneK’s descent was a success. It dropped off a memorial marker on the seabed that reads, “A robot’s first touch of the deep seafloor — A vast new world for humans to explore.” Khatib, a professor, called the experience an “incredible journey.” “This is the first time that a robot has been capable of going to such a depth, interacting with the environment, and permitting the human operator to feel that environment,” he said.8.What can we learn about OceanOneK?A.Its eyes are colorful.B.It functions automatically.C.It looks like its operator from the front.D.It is remotely controlled to explore underwater.9.How does the author develop the third paragraph?A.By listing data.B.By raising questions.C.By reasoning and analyzing.D.By presenting an argument.10.What does the underlined words “descent” mean in the last paragraph?A.Successful operation.B.Deep diving.C.Pressure resistance.D.Flexible exploration.11.What is a suitable title for the text?A.A Creative Explorer B.The Ambitious ExplorationC.A Self-driven Seeker — A Robot D.A Deep-Sea Explorer — OceanOneKMarilu Arce loves her job, but for a time she considered leaving. The traffic-plagued commute from her home to her office, nearly two hours each way, meant her daughters couldn’t enroll in after school activities because she couldn’t get home in time to take them. Then her employer adopted a policy permitting her to work from home two days a week, and “I feel like it changed my life,” she said. Her stress level has dropped. Her daughters are thrilled. She likes her job more. That’s the type of reaction Arce’s boss likes to hear as the company measures the success of the work-from-home policywhich was instituted three years ago in hopes of improving employee retention. So far, it seems to be working: turnover was less than five percent last year—its lowest ever.Flexible work policies top employee wish lists when they look for a job, and employers increasingly have been offering them. Studies have shown working remotely increases employee engagement, but in moderation because there is still value in the relationships nurtured when colleagues are face to face. The key, advocates of flexible work policies say, is to match the environment with the type of work that needs to be done. The flexibility hasn’t hurt productivity, which is up 50 percent. There is “something lost” when colleagues don’t gather at the water cooler, but it’s outweighed by the retention and happiness gains, he said. As jobs that require physical work decline, thanks to technological advances, life superficially appears to get better. Consumers benefit in the form of cheaper prices. Labor-saving appliances all make things easier and suggest that even more and better benefits are on the horizon. But is something lost?Talk long enough to the most accomplished academics, they will brag about a long-ago college summer job waiting tables or repairing hiking trails. They might praise the installer who redid their kitchen. There seems to be a human instinct to want to do physical work. The proliferation of hard-work reality-television programming reflects this apparent need. Indeed, the more we have become immobile and urbanized, the more we tune in to watch reality television’s truckers, loggers, farmers, drillers and rail engineers. In a society that supposedly despises menial jobs, the television ratings for such programmes suggest that lots of Americans enjoy watching people of action, who work with their hands.Physical work, in its eleventh hour within a rapidly changing Western culture, still intrigues us in part because it remains the foundation for 21st century complexity. Before any of us can teach, write or speculate, we must first have food, shelter and safety. And for a bit longer, that will require some people to cut grapes and nail two-by-sixes. No apps or 3D printers exist to produce brown rice. Physical labour also promotes human versatility: Those who do not do it, or who do not know how to do it, become divorced from—and, at the same time, dependent on—labourers. Lawyers, accountants and journalists living in houses with yards and driving cars to work thus count on a supporting infrastructure of electricians, landscapers and mechanics. In that context, physical labour can provide independence, at least in a limited sense of not being entirely reliant on a host of hired workers.12.The author mentions the example of Arce to show that________.A.she dislikes the present job for the long commuting timeB.she is having trouble balancing work and school lifeC.people usually don’t work hard outside officeD.employers are facing the problem of staff drain13.The practice of flexible working time is based on the belief that________.A.it helps to increase job satisfaction for the employeesB.it improves harmonious relationship among colleaguesC.the decline in physical work gives employees more mobilityD.employees are entitled to request it according to their work14.What is the possible reason for the popularity of hard-work reality-television programmes?A.They entertain those employees burned out with overwork.B.People can learn some basic labour skills from these programmes.C.There’s an ongoing need for physical labour skills that technology doesn’t possess.D.They offer instructive information for both employers and employees.15.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.The Emergence of Alternative Work ArrangementsB.The Rise of Automation, the Decline in Need for LabourC.Time to Rethink in the Face of the Evolution of WorkD.New Challenges for Today’s Employers and Academics二、七选五The Upside to Being OutsideResearch shows that being in nature makes people feel good, whether they’re roughing it in the wilderness for days or just hanging out at a local park for a while. One study was conducted in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. Researchers found that most participants’ mood and well-being improved significantly when they spent time in urban parks, even though the average visit was only around half an hour.16 For example, scientists in the United Kingdom studied the impact of the “30 Days Wild” campaign. It challenged people to interact with nature for 30 days by enjoying earthy activities like feeding birds and planting flowers. Participants were measurably happier and healthier throughout the challenge…and for months afterwards, too. 17How does nature boost people’s happiness? Scientists say that spending time in natural settings reduces stress and anxiety, which benefits mental and physical health. Research shows our brains are more relaxed in naturalsettings. To most people, it’s not news that nature can be calming. But multiple studies have found that spending time in nature also has some more surprising benefits, like improving creativity and problem-solving. 18 Another found that exposure to nature helped people score better on tests. That’s more proof that going outside is a smart move! What accounts for the connection with cognition and creativity? It could be that a good dose of nature acts as a cure to information overload. Everyday life involves a lot of multitasking. Some scientists theorize that spending time in nature enables our brains to rest and recover from mental tiredness. 19Naturally, scientific studies don’t cover everything that’s great about the great outdoors. 20 From recreation and exercise to happiness and creativity, there are lots of upsides to getting outside.A.One study revealed that people were better at figuring out puzzles after a four-day camping trip.B.According to many scientific studies, there’s a good chance it’ll make you happier, healthier, and more creative.C.What’s more, the lift people get from nature is long lasting.D.Lots of people enjoy fun activities outside, like swimming, riding bikes, or climbing trees.E.When the only light you’ve seen all day is the glow of a screen, it might be a good idea to switch it off.F.This means that whether you’re studying or playing video games, heading outside to give your brain a break might help you get to the next level.G.So, kicking back in a park is a bit like treating your mind to a restful mini vacation.三、完形填空Since 1960, considerable scientific researches have been done on chimps in their natural habitats.from a young age to gather their own food?In the laboratory, chimps don’t 25 share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no greater effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the nextcage, he will pull 26 -he just doesn’t care whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.Human children, 27 , are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they decide to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this 28 in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally 29 in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very 30 age before most parents have started to train their children to behave 31 . Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence 32 in children before their general cognitive(认知的) skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the 33 world tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core (核心) of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can 34 what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a(n) 35 goal.21.A.structures B.responsibilities C.policies D.behaviors22.A.conflict B.offend C.cooperate D.discuss23.A.help B.contact C.divide D.trust24.A.manage B.decline C.attempt D.force25.A.curiously B.unwillingly C.naturally D.carelessly26.A.in turn B.with care C.at random D.in advance27.A.all in all B.as a result C.in no case D.on the other hand 28.A.cooperativeness B.availability C.attack D.attractiveness 29.A.educated B.possessed C.motivated D.stimulated30.A.old B.young C.middle D.late31.A.creatively B.formally C.competitively D.socially32.A.develops B.decreases C.changes D.disappears33.A.invisible B.abstract C.physical D.imaginary34.A.infer B.adapt C.absorb D.balance35.A.realistic B.shared C.specific D.ambitious四、用单词的适当形式完成短文五、开放性作文46.“友善”是中华民族的传统美德,你校以“友善”为主题举办英语征文比赛,内容包括:1. 日常生活中的友善行为;2. 友善行为的意义或价值;3. 提出倡议。

“It came across my mind like, …How is sh e going to react?‟”he recalled the heartwarming moment. “After all the sacrifices she‟s made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. I‟ll do anything for my daughter. I believe I‟m doing good parenting.”24.How did Solymar feel at first when entering the classroom?A.She was eager to hug her father.B. For example, remove the original wrapping paper and rewrap it in your own; make sure the box is in good condition so the item doesn‟t appear used; check the item and make sure there are no cards or names on the packaging; inspect the item and make sure it is in excellent condition. To point out a common opinion.29.What most contributes to the growing regifting?A.People‟s lack of money.B. People‟s dislike of the gifts.C. People‟s reduced desire for gifts.D. People‟s understanding of its manners.30.What‟s mainly talked about in Paragraph 3? A. Why do people cry when they are emotional? What are tears? Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions. A.Weeping tears.B.Missing a friend.C.Watching movies.D.Escaping pressure. 33.What is the function of basal tears? A.To clean the eye. B.To draw support. C.To show sadness. D.To protect the eye.34.What are humans‟ emotional tears related to according to Vingerhoets? A.Humans' rapid growth. B.Humans' long childhood. C.Humans' developed mind. D.Humans' close relationship.35.In prehistoric times, humans were more likely to . A.cry alone B.cry loudly C.cry silently D.cry together第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

What little training he did have began when he was placed in the New Orleans Colored Waif's Home at the age of 12, after a run-in with the police. The punishment tuned out to be a mixedblessing, for he also had the opportunity to play in a real band. While at the Waif’s Home, Armstrong also got the chance to hear some of the city’s finest musicians. Cornetist Freddie Keppard performed in a nearby club. So did trumpeter and bandleader King Joe Oliver, who took the boy under his wing and taught him how to read music and work on his playing technique. When Oliver left for Chicago, Armstrong chose to stay in New Orleans and work with some of the other top musicians of the day. Some years later in Chicago, King Oliver offered him a place in his band in 1922. It became Armstrong’s biggest challenge yet --- the band had no parts written for trumpet, so he was forced to listen to King Oliver and improvise ( 即兴创作 ).Soon, Armstrong’s undeniable talent was getting notice.Lil Hardin, the band’s piano player and the future Mrs. Armstrong, explains that Oliver kept Armstrong in the second trumpet-chair so that Oliver would still be “King”. Hardin convinced him t o leave the band.Armstrong recorded his first composition, Cornet Chop Suey, one of the most copied jazz solos of all time. This monumental 1928 recording mixes artistry, endurance and showmanship that has rarely, if ever, been matched in jazz.24、What do es the underlined word “run-in” mean in the second paragraph?A、campaignB、tensionC、explorationD、conflict25、Who played a fundamental part in Armstrong’s achievements in music?A、Buddy Bolden.B、Lil Hardin.C、King Joe OliverD、Cornetist Freddie Keppard.26、Why did Louis Armstrong leave King Oliver’ s band?A、Because he wanted to get married in New York.B、Because his talent could not develop completely.C、Because he got a better opportunity in New York.D、Because the man forced him to leave the band.27、What's the main idea of the passage?A、It asks readers to know more about modern jazz.B、It introduces one of the greatest jazz musicians.C、It introduces the development of jazz.D、It describes the importance of talent in playing jazz.CYou may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.First, you must ask yourself, “Where is t he wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.Let’s start with the wind blowing from the behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle to the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat. In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (摆动). It shouldn’t look like on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.28、What should you do when you are learning to sail ?A、Tell wind directions.B、Know wave levels.C、Consider the size of sailsD、Know the position of your boat29、What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?A、The boat.B、The wind.C、The angle.D、The sail.30、According to the passage, which of the following is right?A、Keep the sail inside when sailing with the wind blowing from the behind.B、Allow the sail to flap when sailing with the wind blowing from the side.C、Tack the boat when trying to sail against the wind.D、 Move in a straight line when sailing against the wind.31、Where can you probably find the text?A、 In a physics textbook.B、In a tourist guidebook.C、 In an official report.D、In an entertainment magazine.DHave you ever looked at a fashionable item of clothing and felt confused? If so, your confusion may have made sense.Several months ago, high fashion brand Balenciaga released a "T-shirt shirt”, which is a shirt sewn on the front of a T-shirt. The unusual design has certainly confused a lot of people. But the “double shirt” isn’t fighting alone on the frontier of strange fashion. Ever since US shoe manufacturer Crocs released its famous hole-filled foam shoes, so-called “ ugly fashion” hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down, the Business of Fashion Website noted.British designer Paul Surridge believes that the rise of ugly fashion is a sign that people are b ored of looking perfect all the time. “(Fashion) thrives on novelty”, he told the Financial Times.Indeed, fashi on is all about changes. Something that’s considered uncool one minute can then turn out to be the latest must-have fashion item the next. And in the eyes of US fashion writer Megan Collins, ugly doesn’t necessarily mean the design of the item is ugly. Aft er all, ugly is something subjective. “Ugly fashion means ‘not the mainstream’---- it’s not what everyone’s wearing; it’s not what the general population considers as‘in’ right now,” she told style news site Fashionista. But throughout the history of fashion, when any new trend appears, most people tend to hate it, before it eventually becomes loved. As Italian designer Miuccia Prada told The New York Times, “ Maybe because it is newer, ugly is attractive. Ugly is exciting.”Meanwhile, popular social media fashion bloggers also help people to pick up newugly fashion trends. These bloggers express themselves through their clothes, showing their unique personalities and making statements with their wardrobe choices. However, as Clever-ish Magazine noted, just being comfortable in your own skin could actually be "the best look”.“I personally love having a unique expression, because without ugly fashion and diversity, we'd all look the same,” Australian fashion influencer and model Zanita Whittington told Fahi onista, “ I appreciate anything that’s out of the norm.”32、How does the author lead to the topic of the passage?A、By telling a funny story.B、By asking and answering questionsC、By asking questions and giving examplesD、By giving different remarks from different people.33.、What can we know from the writer Megan Collins?A、Ugly fashion has a standard criterionB、Ugly fashion varies from person to personC、Most people like ugly fashionD、Ugly fashion can be easily predicted34、What will some social media fashion bloggers do to show their personalities?A、They will dress themselves to look perfect.B、They will try some new and exciting clothes.C、They will make statements with others’ clothes choices.D、They will express themselves by wearing ugly clothes.35、Which may be the best title?A、Ugly fashion --- accept it or hate itB、Ugly fashion --- defend it or ban itC、Ugly fashion means a public trendD、Ugly fashion means a sign for perfection第二节:七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But surverys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once.I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don’t feel I was damaged by it.Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children. But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn’t the answer. Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQqs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterpoductive(反作用的) to their mental development, as well. Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks(用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physi punished. Gunnoe’s research suggests they don’t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spank. There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾气). But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical puishment.()68.According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when .A.they were dissatisfied with her gradeB.she showed no respect for the elderC.they cannot control their temperD.their discipline turns out to be not strict enough()69.According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punished .A.are less aggreesive toward others when they get olderB.have slower physical developmentC.benefit from occasional spankingD.may develop lower IQs than their peer()70.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?A.40 percent of children grow up without ever being spankedB.Children who suffer less physical punishment are better studentsC.Occasional open-handed spanking on the bottom are mentally harmfulD.Researchers disagree over whether smacking is mentally harmful to children()71.The author seems to agree that .A.parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or notB.children wh o have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven’tC.good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable wayD.physical punishment should be the last resort of any parentCWITH so many pavilions to visit at the Expo(世博会), how can you best plan your trip?
