My mother always told me,“You should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.”However,it seems like a tough mission to travel all across its expansive surfaces. But luckily for me,Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of18and25the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain$150.My best friends Trevor,Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.
For a group of20-year-olds,this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning,our22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin.Eyes baggy from lack of sleep,we jumped on board as if it were the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter.Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to3,000kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.
The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night,we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it,the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise,a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape when we were in the Canadian Prairies.
Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome. And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm.Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The splendid and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.
Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surrealistic(超现实的)experiences of my life. Before the train adventure,if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination,I would have. That is no longer true.I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

More and more birds are flying to settle in Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of the local government.Covering an area of over 4,000square kilometers,Qinghai Lake is also the country’s biggest salt lake.
Located in Qinghai Province of Northwest China, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point—Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become a paradise for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called“Bird Islands”.

Inspectors and conservators often patrol(巡逻)the lake, enriching local residents’knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivorous animals,as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds’building nests, laying eggs and breeding(繁殖).As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.

A woman eight months pregnant covered head to toe with skin damage.Small children suffering with fevers and painful sores.A father asking for money to buy medicine for his affected five-year-old son after he’d buried two other small children infected with monkeypox.
Monkeypox,a smallpox-related viral disease with two known variants(变种),was named in1958after it was identified in a group of research monkeys in a laboratory in Copenhagen,Denmark.
Clade II,also known as the West African variant,is mild.Meanwhile, another variant —ten times deadlier—exists in Central Africa. The Africa Centers for Disease Control reports that the majority of the3,500suspected Clade I(or Congo Basin strain)cases this year, including more than120deaths,are in the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC).Nigeria, where the Clade II outbreak began, has had about700suspected cases, with fewer than10 deaths.Health experts from National Geographic referred to the steady rise of the Clade I variant in Central Africa, saying countries should be concerned about its threat to global communities and take stronger action to prevent it and other animal-borne diseases from bursting around the world.
“If the West African variant can spread to Europe,America, and other parts of the world, the more harmful and pathogenic(致病的)Congo Basin variant can also go there,”says infectious disease expert Dimie Ogoina at Niger Delta University,in the southern part of Nigeria.“International health organizations must be thoughtful to help address monkeypox and other diseases in Africa.Because if we don’t do this,it will come back to haunt us.”
Some disease experts say we missed an important opportunity to stop the outbreak before it took off.“Monkeypox should be considered a canary(金丝雀)in the coal mine,so that we should do much better disease surveillance(监管)in high-risk populations,”says Anne Rimoin,an infectious disease researcher.“The hardest and most expensive places to do this are in rural, remote parts of Africa,”she says.“But with growing human populations,
mobility, and trade, these viruses can just as easily land on our doorstep.”Rimoin says,“Monkeypox cases have continued to increase over the past12years in the DRC,as well as other countries in Central and West Africa.”If the COVID-19pandemic has taught us anything,”she says,“it’s that an infection anywhere is potential for an infection everywhere.”

M:Jenny, thanks for telling me about the painting courses at the community center.I signed up for it yesterday.
W:You are welcome. So when will you take the courses?
M:On Tuesday and Thursday. Now I need to get some paintbrushes. Can you recommend a good art supplies store near here?
W:I like the one on Washington Street next to the history museum.
M:I think I’ve seen the commercial posters about the store before.
W:Actually,I just got an email about a sale the store’s having this week. You’ll get extra savings this week.
M:Hmm.Washington Street is kind of far from me but I think I can get there this weekend.
W:I’ll send you the email I got from them. With the special discount,it’s definitely worth the trip to the store.
M:I hope so.My class starts from next week.I need to buy the supplies this week.

W:Right, listen everyone. The trip to the Ocean Park is next Tuesday,the26th of May.I hope all of you have a form signed by your parents to say you can go.You need to pay for this trip by Friday.
The cost is£6.50for admission to the Ocean Park and£2.00towards the cost of the coach. So, that means the amount you need is£8.50.
Now,it’s very important for you to bring your lunch. We will provide water and some fruit,so don’t worry about that. We’re going to eat on the beach in front of the Ocean Park, and there won’t be a chance to buy anything,so you must bring your own.
It’s going to be a really interesting trip. There are a few special events the day we are going. We’re going to watch the sharks being fed at3:00no,hold on,that’s at2:30.There’s also a talk every morning at11.The topics change every day and often they talk about fish, but on the day we’re going—that’s next Tuesday—it’s about penguins,so I’m sure you’ll all love that. We’ll give you some worksheets to do while you’re at the Ocean Park, but don’t worry, they’ll be quite easy.。
