A police force in Britain has advertised for members of the public to wash its patrol cars for free in an attempt to cut costs.
Staffordshire Police is hoping to save 5,500 police hours a year by getting volunteers from the community to regularly clean its vehicles. This is the latest costcutting idea from cashstrapped forces, which are also seeking people to work for free to complete tasks such as gardening and translating. However, the idea has raised concerns among police officers and staff, who fear that volunteers could create a security risk.
Staffordshire Police announced its appeal for volunteers to clean cars,
act as interpreters and hand out crimefighting brochures two weeks ago.A spokesman said it had received a number of applications but could not say if any of the jobs had been filled.
The job advertisement posted by the force seeks car washing volunteers who will also be required to check equipment in cars and replace broken items such as traffic cones and flashing lights. The force also wants unpaid interpreters to work alongside officers on patrol,as well as helpers for crime prevention campaigns.
Ben Priestley,of Unison, who represents police staff, said,“The public will be very concerned that this vital work is being done by untrained volunteers who will not be subject to the same high standards of professionally employed police staff.”
PC Andy Adams,of the Staffordshire Police Federation, said,“With this sort of thing they may look at other roles in the organisation where they can push it a little bit further.I would like to think that all these people are properly examined and qualified, but that will,of course, cost money.”
All volunteers must be at least 16 years old and are to be examined and given a training course before they can start work, the force said.Assistant Chief Constable,Julian Blazeby, said he thought local people would be eager to become involved in helping their local force.

A group of Boston experts is taking smartphone gloves to a new level. They're calling the technology the GoGlove. It's a way to control your smartphone with the tap of a finger.
Ben Harris, cofounder of Easier to Use,which developed the GoGlove, said the idea came to him while he was out on the slopes (斜坡) with some friends. The time it took to take his phone out of his pocket, take off his gloves, change the song, and then put everything back put him far behind his friends.Harris knew he wanted to come up with an easier way to use his phone without needing to touch the screen.
The GoGlove is designed to allow people to use their music, camera,GoPro,or listen to texts while they are walking, running or biking by tapping their fingers rather than taking the phone out.
A Bluetooth module in the glove is connected to sensors (传感器) in the fingertips, according to GoGlove designer Eric Ely.Each sensor controls different functions on the phone when it's tapped.“It's all based on the magnet(磁铁) in your thumb and the sensors on your fingertips,” he said.“You just tap the magnet on an individual finger.” And by connecting the gloves to the GoGlove app,the user can set the function that each finger controls.
The gloves are meant to be light in weight so they can fit inside thicker gloves in winter. They are also designed to be easily handwashed. The GoGlove's Bluetooth module can be removed from the glove and used in warmer weather. The module can be stuck to a shirt or a bike and can still control the smartphone.
GoGlove is on Kickstarter where Harris and his team are trying to get funding to take the gloves into production.Right now the GoGlove can be preordered for $79,about 40 percent cheaper than it will retail(零售) for next year.
