Every day, people e into contact with thousands of chemicals. These chemicals are said to be harmless to human health. In fact, the chemicals are considered so safe that we wash with them.We put them on our bodies and even our faces.Other chemical products are used throughout our homes.
By the time you walk out of your front door, you have already been exposed to thousands of chemicals. On its own, each chemical seems harmless. But in bination with other chemicals, they may bee deadly. That is the finding of a two﹣year study by a high﹣profile task force of scientists. The task force was told to investigate the cancer﹣causing possibility of chemical mixtures.
Linda Gulliver was one of the 174 scientists on the task force.Their job was to study the cancer﹣causing potential of 85 chemicals. All 85 are said to be mon in the environment.
Ms.Gulliver explains that chemicals have the potential or ability to form dangerous mixtures.Even simple minerals can bee dangerous when mixed with chemicals found in plastics or beauty products.Working in groups, the scientists explored how different chemical mixtures could lead to cancer.Ms.Gulliver’s team looked at the ability of different binations t o support the increase of malignant human cells.
She says the current way to identify whether chemicals cause cancer is to test them one at a time. This method leads, she adds,to a long list of supposedly “safe” chemicals. She and her team say that approach needs to change.
“We definitely need certain research to find out what mixtures of chemicals would be more harmful than others; what groups of chemicals, when together, would produce more harmful effects. And at the moment, that is not known.”

On April 14th, 2010, my entire life changed in an instant. One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bone were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oning traffic.
As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $l.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economies all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Iceland’s many volcanoes.
However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But c ancelling 48% of the world’s flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint.
Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I never would have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations.
In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future.
I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a new-found love in Earth sciences.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected the next president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope.
In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family.
She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.
There’s al ways going to be articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you.
Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five? If you just want to keep a stable nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right?
There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism. They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest an enormous amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance enhancement, even plastic surgery.
They encourage lifestyle makeovers: wine tasting classes and expensive trips overseas. They make you believe that if you do as they say, you can improve the quality of your life and join the elites.
But what’s the downside of being mediocre? Do you really n eed to go to the gym five days a week unless you are a gym maniac? Do you need to take hundreds of selfies and Photoshop the selected ones to post on
WeChat? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to blend into high society later?
Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and fortable life, why bother to chase after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.
32. Why do many persons focus the attention on Ivanka?
A. She assisted her father in winning the presidential election.
B. She together with her family is put under careful investigation.
C. She is a virtual role frequently seen among ordinary people.
D. She gets what she has through personal efforts despite decent origin.
33. Which of the following are considered as a life belonging to people of higher social rank?
① Polish and post carefully selected selfies on WeChat.
② Break your neck to earn your first pot of gold.
③ Spare no effort to better physical appearance.
④ Sign up for wine tasting classes and oversea trips.
A. ①④
B. ②④
C. ②③
D. ③④
34. After we read the passage, we could infer that ________.
A. Ivanka’s sleeping five hours a day makes the vast majority guilty.
B. keeping a stable nine-to-five job will be thought of as a loser.
C. Being elites is believed by more and more people nowadays.
D. improving the quality of life will promote one’s social status.
35. Which attitude towards life would the writer probably agree with?
A. Life is like a dogsled team. If you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.
B. There is only one success----to be able to spend your life in your own way.
C. Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
D. The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks around the world. 36 Experts think that there are more flavors of coffee than there are of wine. Coffee contains caffeine, something that raises our awareness, keeps us from falling asleep or simply gives us a kick in the morning or after lunch.
37 For a long time doctors have told people not to drink too much coffee, because it may lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, and headaches.
Scientists have now found out that it is the quality of coffee and the way it is made that hold the key to our health. 38 Among other things, this is linked to the consumption of a strong coffee. Experts also point out that different roasts and types of coffee beans have different effects on our health. Milk and sugar change the different levels of caffeine in a cup of coffee.
A new study by a Harvard research group says that there is no link between coffee and health problems. Drinking several cups of strong coffee a day is not connected with early death or other heart diseases. Coffee has many advantages, as the new study suggests. While alcohol makes people sleepy and slow moving, coffee gives them energy. 39
Although a lot still needs to be uncovered about coffee, it seems to reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes.40 But reports show that people who drink coffee may develop Parkinson's disease later in life, or maybe not at all.
A. There are many different types of coffee.
B. Scientists ask people not to drink coffee at night.
C. Elderly people in Greece live longer than normal.
D. Doctors think that coffee may have a positive effect on our brain.
E. Sugar can change the different levels of caffeine in a cup of coffee.
F. However, food experts are still undecided on how healthy coffee is
G. Getting together for a cup of coffee also has a positive effect on relationships.

书面表达(满分25分)
There is no denying that we are eager for golden chances to be successful in life. However, many people are not aware that chances are always for those who get well prepared.I didn’t realize it until I went to high school.
Soon after I became a senior one student, a singing petition was to be held in school.I love singing but I was very shy then and had never sung at the top of my voice in public.I could only sing to myself most of the time.Somehow, I wanted to have a try. When I talked about it with my parents, they inspired me to follow my inner voice and told me as long as I got well prepared, I would make it.With their encouragement, I became confident and practiced hard after class.Sometimes, I would turn to my music teacher for help. When I felt I was ready, the day came.Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and began to sing with my full emotions. It turned out that I won the first prize .
This experience has taught me a precious lesson in my life.If you are not successful yet, most probably you haven’t been well prepared.Once you have, chances will surely favor you.

M:Aren’t you going to swim?
W:Are you kidding? Don’t you know I can’t swim? I want to have a sunbath here.
M:You’re not telling me that we drove 50 miles to e here just for a sunbath, are you?
W:Hey, don’t shout! e here! Sit closer. Now, Jim, we’ve had a lovely Sunday. We can enjoy ourselves.
M:What about your beautiful bathing suit? We shopped all day for our wedding anniversary. Don’t you want to show it off?
W: Everybody who walks past me sees it. Besides, it’s a good sunbathing suit.
M:All right. Suit yourself. I’m going into the water now. I’m tired of lying in the sand.
W:I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t we hire a boat and go for a ride?
M:Are you serious? That’ll be wonderful!

M: I really enjoyed the art lesson yesterday, Eva.
W: Me too, David. I liked going into the city to draw different places. Is this your picture of the museum?

W: I know Mary loves drawing water. Did she go to the river?
M: She went to the sports center and drew some children having a swimming lesson. What about Patrick?
W:We were walking to the market together but then he saw someone cleaning windows in the bank and he stopped to draw that.
M: Cristina is the best artist. I saw her in Bridge Street sitting at a table having a drink. She was drawing a waiter talking to a customer. The picture looked really good.
W: What a great art lesson!
