第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Rich as a King
William 1, who conquered England some 930 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet (抽水马桶), paper towels, or riding lawn mower (除草机). How did he get by?
History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn’t buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.
Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you’d think I’d be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living person: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard’s new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors,
There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You’d think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no we want a hot b ath too.
Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by today’s standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.
Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers’ fancy counter tops and my awn worn Formica will seem equally shabby, I can’t keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.

23.(8分)Physics could soon make it possible to replace those heavy glass lenses(镜头)on cameras with “metalenses” -materials engineered to focus light at a fraction(少量)of the weight and size of traditional lensing.
A team from Harvard University’s school of engineering has designed a metalens that can foc us nearly the entire visible light. Previous metalenses could focus only narrow color wavelengths, or wavelengths outside the visible.
When light moves through glass, the different wavelengths that make up the light slow at different rates. This causes their paths through the glass to bend, so that they separate. Pass a beam of white light through a prism(棱镜), and this effect will cause a rainbow to burst out the other end. This presents a challenge to lens makers; a single focusing element will project a picture that has colors from red to violet hitting different spots on the film.
So, modem camera lenses use many different glass elements to reverse that effect, pushing the different wavelengths of light back onto a single focal point, although that doesn’t work perfectly; many photographer s know the pain of buying an expensive lens only to find a violet edge around the subjects in their photographs.
A metalens takes a different approach to focusing light. Instead of using the reflection of glass, a metalens uses tiny structures, typically made of titanium dioxide(二氧化钛), to bend wavelengths toward the metalens focal point. In the past, though, metalenses could bend just one wavelength at a time, or in more advanced cases, a narrow band of the visual light. The newly created metalens bends nearly the full.
Metalenses have other challenges to overcome before they can compete seriously with traditional glass. The most significant one: resolution(分辨率), according to a journal article. None of the metalenses so far are particularly sharp compared with their best glass competitors. But, again, as the technology progresses, it could address that limitation.
Metalenses might not land on store shelves anytime soon, but they are coming.
1、What do we know about the “metalenses” from Paragraph 1?
A.It’s sma ll. B.It’s expensive.
C.It’s visible. D.It’s narrow.
2、Why is it tough in making lens?
A.Light is low at different rates.
B.Light path is bent when light travels.
C.An image has colors from red to violet.
D.White light will cause different colors.
3、What does the underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Change. B.Exchange.
C.Increase. D.Improve.
4、What’s unique in ways of focusing light for a new metalens?
A.It throws the glass light back.
B.It uses metals in the structure.
C.It nearly makes the visual light all bend.
D.It is more advanced and narrow.
24.(8分)No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. the sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But next year, a ship from Earth will fly closer to it than any man made craft has flown before. The mission(任务)is a big development for scientists and, maybe, for everyone else.
In September 2018, NASA plans to launch the Parker Solar Probe. After a journey of nearly 90 million miles, it will fly within 3.8 million m iles of the sun. within two months of launching, the probe is expected to reach the sun’s
corona(日冕). That’s the sun’s outer atmosphere of gases.
Getting there won’t be easy. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has proved diffi cult. But that hasn’t stopped engineers from trying. Temperatures in the corona can reach millions of degrees. The probe will limit itself to regions where things get no hotter than 2,500oF. That’s still a heavy heat load for a spacecraft. But a
4.5-inch-thick heat shield(罩)will protect the probe’s camera and scientific instruments.
NASA says the data the probe collects could provide knowledge into the physics of stars. Our sun is special to us. But as a star, it’s rather common. So the better we understand how it works, the better we understand all stars of its mass and color.
Perhaps the most important is what the probe may show us about solar storms. During solar storms, charged
particles stream through the solar system. They can disable communications satellites and shut down powder systems. One study has found that a very intense solar storm could cause up to $2 trillion in damage in the US alone. It could also black out the East Coast for a year.
Understanding solar storms might allow us to predict them and protect ourselves. That could make even a mission with a billion-plus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.
1、What can we learn about the probe?
A.It’ll fly closer to the sun that the previous ones
B.It’s the first man made instrument to fly to the sun
C.It’ll get to the core of the sun in nearly two months
D.It’ll fly about 3.8 million miles to reach the corona.
2、What is the challenge for the engineers?
A.Directing the probe to collect data
B.Reducing the temperature of the probe
C.Building a shield against the heat
D.Limiting the probe to proper regions
3、What might be the best title?
A.Exploring the stars B.Getting close to the sun
C.Designing a spaceship D.Protecting the earth
4、Where does the value of the mission lie?
A.Monitoring satellites B.Exploring solar energy
C.Developing scientific instruments D.Forecasting solar storms
25.(10分)I’ve noticed something happening fairly regularly among my daughter and her friends. When they’re all sitting around asking each other which photo they should post on Instagram, or when they’re sending clothes pictures around in a group chat asking which one they should wear, many of the girls will respond by choosing the worst picture and the least attractive clothes. Why? Because they’re teenagers and envy is what they do.
Every one in a while, though, there will be a girl who speaks the truth. The one who says “Your smile looks false in the first picture,” or “That second pair of jeans makes your figure look extremely unusual.” Sure, these may at first seem kind of harsh. But according to new research published in Psychological Science, they are coming from friends who truly care, the ones who aren’t afraid to speak up and tell it like it is.
“We have shown that people can be cruel to be kind,” explaine d lead researcher Belén López-Pérez. “They may decide to make someone feel worse if this emotion(感情)is beneficial for that other person, even if this is not of any
personal benefit to them.” For the study, researchers asked 140 volunteers to play a violent video game, and then give advice to an unknown partner who was going through tough personal times on winning the game. The researchers found that volunteers were more likely to do negative(反射的)if they felt it was important for their partner to win the game. The findings suggest that it was sympathy that led the participants to choose particular negative emotional experience because they believed it would eventually help their partner be successful in the game.
“These findings helped us to understand, for i nstance, why we sometimes may try to make our loved ones feel bad if we think this emotion to be useful to achieve a goal,” López-Pérez concluded. In other words, the truth may hurt, but we all need a mean friend who is willing to give it to us.
1、What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 1?
A.To point out a social phenomenon.
B.To introduce the topic of the passage.
C.To warn girls not to send pictures around.
D.To persuade the girls to behave themselves.
2、What does the underlined word “these” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The friends. B.The girls.
C.The clothes. D.The comments.
3、How did the volunteers advise their partner to win the game?
A.By cheering them on. B.By performing acts of kindness.
C.By tending to respond negatively. D.By expressing deep sympathy for them.
4、What is the best title for the text?
A.We Need Mean Friends. B.Never hurt others.
C.We Must Try Hard to Achieve Goals. D.Never Play Violent Video Games.
