After we meet people, it is up to us to make them our friends.Let us stop a moment and consider what really makes a friend. The major qualities like faithfulness, devotion, friendly company, flash through our minds. But it is the large number of very small particular qualities that make up one’s whole character, such as cheerfulness, friendliness, and punctuality (守时).After all, “ to make a friend, be a friend” is not such a big and difficult order. There are particular favorable qualities, which attract others to us, and some elements which do have an effect on people in fundamental psychology(基础心理学) or not.
If you are in the presence of a shy person, talking and asking casual (随意的) questions may bring him out of his shell.Think of what would be most acceptable to the other person, for you to talk, or to listen.
Always remember to listen, but listen intelligently. To have anyone “ hang on our words” is the most unnoticeably clever way in the world to please somebody. For a few extremely happy seconds we are the centre of attraction, but when it is our turn to be audience, let us remember how we felt as the actor, and let’s be genuinely (真正地) interested in what the other fellow is saying.
Other people will like us, if we like them.If you want friends, keep your mind and heart open to friendship.Be alive to the other person’s world.

Today I had an internship (实习)at the cancerology department. Of all the patients I ever met during my internships, I was most affected by patients suffering from cancer and who had almost no hope of returning to a normal life. This led me to think about the question of how our nutrition and lifestyle has changed over the centuries and how cancer can be avoided. Today you have more fatty, sugar foods and animal meats. All these contribute to the formation of cancers. So how to decrease the risks of cancer?
Limit the consumption of fine sugars
By this, I mean sugars which are used to make cakes, drinks and other food. So no sugar in your coffee or tea from now on. Replace white bread with whole-wheat breads. Stop drinking sodas. They contain a lot of sugar which are digested and absorbed very quickly by the human body. A diet with lots of sugars can speed the development of cancerous cells in your body. It is necessary then to limit the consumption of fine sugars.
Green tea
Green tea is rich in polyphenols and seems to stop the formation of tumors by preventing blood vessels from forming everywhere. Green tea also seems to prevent the formation of cancers of the prostate, breasts, kidneys, skins and mouth.
Keep a correct weight
Overweight and obesity increase the risks of developing cancer, even more if you have a lot of fat around your waists. An increase in weight raises the probability of having cancer.
Do some regular physical activities
The famous 30 minutes daily walk must no longer remain as free talks. You must make sure you have a daily time to do some jogging, walking or other physical activities. Doing some kinds of sports may have some benefits against certain types of cancer such as lung and pancreatic cancers.
Limit the consumption of red meat to 500g per week
Red meat has been known to be one of the causes of the cancer of the colon and rectum. But do not remove it completely from your diet because it is also a very good source of essential minerals and nutrients like proteins, zinc and iron.
Limit consumption of salt to 5g per day
It seems that salt is one of the major causes of stomach cancer. Note that nutrition is one of the contributing factors among other factors such as heredity, stress, work environment, exposure to sun and chemicals, smoking but if you manage to at least control one factor, you are decreasing the risks of developing cancer.
45. The purpose for the writer to write the article is to tell us _______
A. how to live a healthy life
B. how to go on a diet
C. how to keep fit
D. how to decrease the risks of cancer
46. How many contributing factors of cancer are mentioned in the text?______
A. 4
B. 5
C. 6
D. 7
47. Which of the following statements will the writer agree more?
A.Red meat does no harm to our body.
B.Salt may cause kidney cancer.
C.Doing exercise every day is beneficial.
D.Overweight has nothing serious.
48. Why should we limit the consumption of fine sugars?
A.Sugars are digested and absorbed very quickly.
B.Sugars can speed the development of cancerous cells.
C.Sugars prevent blood vessels from forming everywhere.
D.Replace white bread with whole-wheat breads.
C
They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories (配饰). Yet these are girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies.
A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favoring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.
Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert, said, “W omen over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960s. In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years — now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to. Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly. ”
Professor Twigg analyzed family expending(支出)data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same—and 5 or 6 per cent of spending—the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply.
The professor said, “Clothes are now 70 per cent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East. In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere. Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them. ”
Fashion designer Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by celebrity(名流) style than in previous years.
She said, “When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them. Older women are much more aware of celebrities. There’s also th e boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago, my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. My own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago. ”
49. Professor Twigg found that, compared with the 1960s, _______.
A. the price of clothes has generally fallen by 70%
B. the spending on clothes has increased by 5% or 6%
C. people spend 30% less than they did on clothes
D. the amount of clothes bought has risen by 5% or 6%
50. What can we learn about old women in terms of fashion?
A. They are often ignored by fashion designers.
B. They are now more easily influenced by stars.
C. They are regarded as pioneers in the latest fashion.
D. They are more interested in clothes because of their old age.
51. It can be concluded that old women tend to wear the latest fashions today mainly
because
A. they get tired of things more quickly
B. TV shows teach them how to change their look
C. they are in much better shape now
D. clothes are much cheaper than before
52. Which is the best possible title of the passage?
A. Age Is No Barrier for Fashion Fans

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight .”
“Two full inches in the first three days!”
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device of such products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food Drug Administration)can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action ,including seizure (查封) of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律诉讼), and new devices appear continually, Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.
53.It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are ______.
A. objective
B. costly
C. unreliable

D. if its distributors challenge FDA’s authority
56.The Relaxacisor is mentioned as_______.
A. a product which was designed to produce electricity

Sitting on the peaceful coast of Galapagos Islands. Ecuador, watching the sun move quietly into the sea, you shouldn’t forget that Charles Darwin (1809-1882) arrived here in 1835. He stayed on the islands for five weeks, observing various animals. This finally inspired his famous work, On the Origin of Species. You can certainly follow Darwin’s footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands.
The islands are certainly a paradise for wildlife, as there are no natural killers on the islands and the number of boats and visitors is under government control. Though you cannot walk freely as Darwin did about 200 years ago, each day is as impressive as it could be.
The most well-known animals of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise, which can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Santa Cruz, the second largest island in the archipelago (群岛). Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been in their youth by Darwin himself.
Despite strict control over activities and timing, your stay on the Galapagos will be remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures; diving with sea lions that swim and play within inches of you; feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim; and most magically, seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air. Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin, so you will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world. At night you will sleep on board the ship, leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands, which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time.
