Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a
bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day. When Mary was hospitalized with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious.Richard, who worked for a business company, was eager to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job.
They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry.“We knew it had to be a specialty store because we couldn’t match the big chains dollar for dollar,” says Mary. One figure caught her attention: She’d read somewhere that roughly 20 percent of books sold were mysteries (推理小说), and many buyers spent more $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers.
On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Cafénear their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family’s money to start a shop.To cover the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from relatives and from an bank.
The store merely broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and served dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited dozens of writers to discuss their stories.
Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales clerks, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income,” says Richard.“This has always been about an enjoyable life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”
56.When Mary was in hospital, the couple realized that ____.
A.they had to put their plan into practice
B.health was more important than wealth
C.heart trouble was a serious illness
D.they both needed to stop working
57.After Mary got well from her illness they began _____.

B.to buy and read more mystery books

All forms of tobacco —cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco —are dangerous. It doesn't help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes.
The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn't always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as "I just don't like it" or "I want to stay in shape for soccer" (or football, basketball, or other sport).
The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped evidently.Today, about 23% of high school students smoke.
If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available.Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best.Others find that a slower approach is the way to go.Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations like the American Cancer Society. The Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.
When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don’t give up.Some people find they have a few setbacks before they manage to quit for good.Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything —more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live! 67.What will be the best title of the passage?
A.Live a Long Life
B.Staying Smoke Free
C.The Smoking Problems
D.The Good News for Smokers
68.How can you effectively quit smoking?
A.Walking slowly B.Eating cold turkey
C.Staying in hospital D.Finding a suitable approach
69.We can conclude that after stopping smoking you will ___________.
A.have no cancer B.be more attractive
C.run for a long time D.get more opportunities
70.Who is the passage written for?
A.adolescents B.Heavy smokers
C.College students D.Smoking athletes
