My Favorite Traditional Holiday - Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is my absolute favorite holiday! It's a time for celebrating with family, eating delicious foods, and having lots of fun. Every year I look forward to the festivities and traditions surrounding the Chinese New Year.
The celebrations actually start on New Year's Eve with a huge feast called the Reunion Dinner. My whole family gathers together at my grandparents' house for an amazing banquet. The dishes are so yummy - my favorites are the dumplings, noodles, whole steamed fish, and sweet rice balls for dessert. We feast and feast until our tummies are totally stuffed!
After dinner, it's time for the elders to hand out the famous red envelopes or "hong bao" filled with money. My grandparents call us kids over one by one to give us our red envelopes. They always tell us we have to spend the money on something fun! Last year I bought a cool new video game with my red envelope money.
Once we get our red envelopes, the real fun begins - firecrackers and fireworks! We go outside and light a whole bunch of firecrackers. They make such a loud popping noise that
is supposed to scare away any evil spirits. After the firecrackers, we watch a huge fireworks show light up the sky. I love the bright bursts of color and loud booming sounds of the fireworks. It's so exciting!
The next couple of weeks after New Year's Eve are also filled with traditions and festivities. On New Year's Day, we aren't allowed to sweep or take out the garbage because you don't want to sweep away any incoming good luck and prosperity for the year. My sister and I have fun making crafts like paper lanterns and decorations with the characteristic red and gold colors of the holiday.
My favorite tradition is watching the amazing lion dances performed by martial artists. The colorful lion costumes are so cool, with the dancers moving in rhythmic motions underneath to make the lion look alive. Sometimes the lion dancers even climb up tall poles or do other stunts that seem almost impossible! I want to be a lion dancer when I grow up.
Another highlight of the holiday is receiving even more red envelopes from our aunts, uncles and parent's friends. Whenever I see adults I know, I make sure to greet them with the traditional New Year's greeting "Gong Xi Fa Cai" which means "Wishing you prosperity in the new year." That way, they have to give me a red
envelope with money! My parents get so annoyed at how I pester everyone for red envelopes, but hey - it's a kid's dream to get free money.
We eat so many special foods and snacks during the New Year holiday like nian gao (sweet sticky rice cakes), dried candied fruits, seeds, and my brother's favorite - candied lotus root. Oranges and tangerines are everywhere because they are symbols of prosperity. I don't even like tangerines that much but I eat so many of them during Chinese New Year!
My mom always buys me new clothes, shoes and pajamas to wear for the new year. We have to look our best and wear new clothing to symbolize a fresh start for the new year. I love my new outfits but I get a little sad sometimes because I have to get rid of some of my old clothes and toys to get rid of any bad luck from the previous year.
After two weeks of nonstop eating, red envelopes, firecrackers and fun, the big Chinese New Year celebration comes to an end with the Lantern Festival. My family goes to the park or festival grounds to watch incredible performances, eat more delicious snacks from street vendors, and release floating lanterns into the night sky. We write our wishes for the new year on the lanterns and make a wish as we release them up into the
air. It's always a beautiful sight to see the glowing lanterns drift up and fill the sky. The Lantern Festival marks the final celebration for ringing in the new year.
I just love everything about Chinese New Year - the traditions, the food, the festivities, the time off from school to spend with family, and most of all, getting piles of cash in those red envelopes! It's such a special and fun holiday filled with lucky symbols, superstitions and plenty of excitement. I can't wait for the next Chinese New Year to come around!。
