Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people or companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests[1]ideas, and pictures or videos in virtual communities and networks. With the development of computer science technology, social media becomes more and more diversity, such as QQ, MSN, Twitter.
As we all know that, everything has two sides. Social media has changed our live, not only the positive aspects but also the negative aspects. So I want to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of social media in this essay.
Advantages of social media
A social network is a social structure made up of individuals or organizations called "nodes", which are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.
Social Networks are groups of people who share interests and who interact in a variety of ways via software on websites. These include file-sharing, chatting, messaging, exchanging photos or video etc. Social network sites are usually free to join. Include Face book, QQ, Twitter and so on.
We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site.
The Importance of Social Networking
Social networking can help a business gain contacts, clients, and increased public awareness.Even entrepreneurs who run small businesses from their homes can take advantage of this resource to set up a global presence.
To make the most of social networking, it's important to fully understand the concept of social networking and how it can be applied in ways that will help you grow your business.
Social networking is making its mark in history these days. In fact, it is progressing so fast, it is leaving the news media in the dust. Everyday people are reporting news faster than a whole news team.
Disadvantages of social media
Despite the advantages，it is necessary for us to distinguish the drawbacks of the social media.
Being a product of high-technology, Internet and computers are being more and more widely used in our everyday life. They can offer us fast and convenient service for communication.
In recent years, computers and the Internet have become popular among university students. Quite a lot of them use them at school to keep in touch with their families and friends instead of going home to see them in person or writing letters. Which, of course brings conveniences to them, but I don’t think it is good to do so. Internet makes electronic communication convenient, but it will never replace face to face contact. Both electronic communication and face-to-face contact are important in our life. What we should do it to apply each communication ways in the right way.
Technology development enables us to communication with parents and friend in a brand new and fast way, but it is face-to face contact that deepens the feelings and emotions between people.
What this thought-provoking drawing mirrors is the phenomenon that the Internet has penetrated into our life. There is no consensus of opinions among people regarding whether electronic communication can replace face-to-face contact. Some people hold the attitude that we shouldn’t spend too much time on their computer terminal rather than relating to people in the real world. The reasons can be listed as follows. In the first place, it will make people addicted to computer and Internetto spend too much time on these. What is more, it will impact and influence people’s family affection and friendship.
Just as an old Arab proverb says, “Every sword has its two edges.”On the contrary, others are under the impression that electronic communication can replace face-to-face contact.There are some reasons behind this attitude. For one thing, these useful and powerful communication tools have made it much faster, easier and cheaper to keep in touch with family and friends in other countries (and also to do international business).For another, people cannot live without Internet and Wi-Fi nowadays.
Internet does exert such a profound effect on our life that it revolutionizes the way of people‘s living and thinking. As is subtly revealed in the portrayal，there are two parents sitting in the front of computer，who are chatting with their child on the internet. What a meaningful picture!
From my perspective, the electronic contact cannot replace face to face communication owing to the following factors. To begin with, over-reliance on electronic contact will damage the interpersonal relationship, for the cold machine never replaces a warm-hearted greeting face to face. For example, the aged parents would like their only son who works far away home to come back home more often rather than to talk with him on the internet occasionally. What‘s more, face to face communication is preferable because it is beneficial to build a harmonious society, for it attaches more importance on human affection and feelings instead of convenience and speed.
Hence, it is necessary for us to use Internet in a reasonable way. After all, Internet is invented to connect you and me, and to bring conveniences to our life rather than set a barrier to keep people beyond reach. If we want to keep our interpersonal relationship more effectively, we should spend more time with them face to face in real life. Only in this way can we not only make full use of the communication tool on the net but also make our relationship tighter.
