Several different stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine’s Day. One story dates back to the days of Roman Empire(帝国). According to the story,Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of the army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join the army. Therefore, he made a rule—no young men could marry until he had served in the army for some years.
A priest (牧师) named Valentine broke the rule and secretly helped a great number of young people marry. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put him in prison, where he remained until his death on February 14.
After his death, Valentine was made a saint (圣人)and the day of his death was named “Saint Valentine’s Day.”It became the custom for lovers to send each other message on this day. Now Saint Valentine’s Day is a time for people to send one another their greeting of many kinds. February 14, Valentine’s Day, is sweetheart’s day, on which people in love with each other express their tender emotions(感情).
People sometimes put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers. Words of love may be written on a flower-covered card, or something else. Whatever present they send, the message is almost the same “Will you be my Valentine?”

Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time –about eight hours after you wake up –your body temperature goes down. This is why you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments, and they found people would sleep for one long period(一段时间) and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease.
Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips for you. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap – even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.

I was lucky that my host family (寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
