2016山东高考英语二轮:阅读理解训练(11)及答案阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
“Experience may possibly be the best teacher, but it is not a particularly good teacher.” You might think that Winston Churchill or perhaps Mark Twain spoke those words, but they actually come from James March,a professor at Stanford University and a pioneer in the field of organizational decision making. For years March(possibly the wisest philosopher of management)has studied how humans think and act,and he continues to do so in his new bookThe Ambiguities of Experience. He begins by reminding us of just how firmly we have been sticking to the idea of experiential learning:“Experience is respected;experience is sought;experience is explained.” The problem is that learning from experience involves(涉及)serious complications(复杂化),ones that are part of the nature of experience itself and which March discusses in the body of this book.In one interesting part of the book, for example,he turns a doubtful eye toward the use of stories as the most effective way of experiential learning. In our efforts to make stories interesting,he argues,we lose part of the complicated truth of things. He says “The more accurately(精确地)reality is presented, the less understandable the story, and the more understandable the story, the less realistic it is.”Besides being a broadly knowledgeable researcher,March is also a poet, and his gift shines through in the depth of views he offers and the simple language he uses. Though the book is short,it is demanding:Don’t pick it up loo king for quick, easy lessons. Rather,be ready to think deeply about learning from experience in work and life.1. According to the text,James March is.A. a poet who uses experience in his writingB. a teacher who teaches story writing in universityC. a researcher who studies the way humans think and actD. a professor who helps organizations make important decisions2. According to James March,experience.A. is overvaluedB. is easy to explainC. should be actively soughtD. should be highly respected3. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A. Experience makes stories more accurate.B. Stories made interesting fail to fully present the truth.C. The use of stories is the best way of experiential learning.D. Stories are easier to understand when reality is more accurately described.4. What’s the purpose of this text?A. To introduce a book.B. To describe a researcher.C. To explain experiential learning.D. To discuss organizational decision making.【参考答案】1-4 CABAASince I started working part-time at a grocery store, I have learned that a customer is more than someone who buys things. To me, a customer is a person whose memory fails entirely once he or she starts to push a shopping cart(车). One of the first things customers forget is how to count. There is no other way to explain how so many people get in their express line, which is clearly marked 15 items(件) or less, with 20, 25 or even a cart load of items.Customers also forget why they came to the store in the first place. Just as I finish ringing up an order, a customer will say, “ Oops, I forgot to pick up a fresh loaf of bread. I hope you don’t mind waiting, while I go to get it.”Five minutes later, he’s back with the bread, a bottle of milk, and three rolls of paper towels. What is stranger is that customers also seem to forget that they have to pay for their groceries. Instead of writing a check or looking for a credit card while I am ringing up the groceries, a customer will wait until I announce the total. Then, in surprise, she says , “ Oh no, what did I do with my check book?” After 5 minutes of digging through her purse, she borrows my pen because she has forgotten hers. But I have to tolerate customers because they pay my salary, and that’s something I can’t afford to forget.21. What does the author say about his customers?A .They can not count numbers.B. They sometimes jump the queue.C. They don’t know how to express themselves.D. They behave as if their memories had totally failed.22. When customers arrive at the check-out counter,they_______A. find their pens lostB. go back and get more itemsC. can not wait to pay for their groceries.D. prefer paying by check to paying with a credit card.24. We can infer from the text that ________A. business in the grocery store runs wellB. the author finds his present job full of funC. the author’s part-time job calls for patienceD. customers go to grocery stores without planning.21~24 DBBCBFlappy Bird is flapping(拍打) its wings no more. It changes the bra in, which could bring about cognitive advances as well," said Yunxin Wang of Beijing Normal Univers ity.“Our results suggest it’s better to start musical training before seven, which agrees with what most piano teachers recommend,” sh e added. She hoped the results might help parents decide when was the best for their children to learn an instrument. The brain’s cortex(皮层) plays a leading role in one’s abilities, from thought and language to memory and attention. The area matures rapidly in the early years of life, and its development could be affected more if a person starts musical training before it fully matures.Wang studied 48 Chinese students aged between 19 and 21 who had received formal music training for at least a year sometime between the ages of 3 and 15. Each had a scan to measure the thickness of the brain’s cortex. After considering sex and the number of years spent having music lessons, Wang found that musical training that started before seven appeared to thicken areas of the brain involved in language skills and executive function, which is a person’s ability to plan and accomplish tasks.“We’re not sure why these changes occur, but a reasonable explanation is that early starters might depend more on hearing clues(线索) when learning music, since it might be more difficult for younger children to read music,” Wang said.32. According to the researchers, musical training before the age of seven can _______________.A. contribute to future work.B. create a successful lifeC. develop all-round abilitiesD. deal with puzzling problem33. When conducting the research with the students, Wang __________.A. tested their language abilitiesB. watched their musical performancesC. focused on school behavior and achievementsD. measured the thickness of the brain’s cortex34. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____________.A. it must be hard for kids to read musicB. kids are more likely to learn music by hearingC. Wang’s explanation has been the most reasonableD. Wang will research into the reasons for the brain change35. For what purpose does the author write the text?A. To describe the development of brain.B. To challenge the previous discoveries.C. To present the findings of the research.D. To give advice on how to learn music.32~35 ADBC。

2016高考英语二轮阅读理解练习(1)及答案2016高考英语阅读理解--日常生活类Papa’s Straw HatPapa was a ranger. He worked with horses. He always wore clean clothes with a hat even when he worked. His hat was always the same kind of a cowboy hat- large black hat of heavy wool. He wore his hat full and high. I think he wanted to look taller than he really was.Mama was proud of the way he looked when he wore his hat and his best clothes. But in some way she got the idea that papa would lose his hair if he kept wearing a heavy wool cowboy hat in the hot weather. She began to talk about his hats.“Papa,” she said one day, “why don't you get a nice cool straw hat? That heavy wool cowboy hat may cause losing hair!” Papa laughed at her and explained that the horses wouldn’t recognize him if he changed the hat. But she didn’t believe him.Mama talked and talked about the hat all summer long. At last papa answered, a little angry, “It would not the cowboy hat but a wife’s talking about the hat that makes me lose my hair.”Mama had a very serious look on her face. She went straight out and later came home with a straw hat. It was a bad year for ranger and we didn't have much money. She thought that if she spent the money for a straw hat, papa would wear it. When papa saw the hat, his face got red. Without a word, he pulled the straw hat down over his head until it hid his eyes and went on to train the horses. He was a good ranger and gentle to his horses. But as papa got close to the horses this time, they jumped high into the air, raising their front feet. All of them ran around in the rounded field and then raced toward the barn. Papa began to shout “Woo boys. Steady boys, steady.” But there was nothing equal to.Papa walked back straight to the stove in the kitchen, pushed the straw hat deep downinto the fire then turned to mama, in a way that even frightened me. “Now listen to me, mama. Understand this I will never wear a straw hat or any other kind of hat my horses do not like.” Then he put on his wool cowboy hat and walked out of the house.I never heard mama talk any more about hats. Perhaps, that is why when papa died many years later, there was a round spot on the top of his head where there was no hair.【小题1】According to the passage, a ranger is _______.A.a person wearing a woolen hatB.a position requiring clean clothesC.a person training horses for some purposeD.a person riding a carriage with horses【小题2】Mama bought papa a straw hat because _______.A.most cowboys preferred to wear itB.she was worried about his healthC.a woolen one didn’t suit papaD.it was cheap and she could save money【小题3】What quality can we learn from papa?A.Gentle. (The Improving Economic Situation In Greece)Greece, economically, is in the black. With very little to export other than such farm products as tobacco, cotton and fruit, the country earns enough from ‘invi sible earnings’ to pay for its needed, growing imports. From the sending out of things the Greeks, earn only $285 million; from tourism, shipping and the remittances of Greeks abroad, the country takes in an additional #375 million and this washes out the almost $400 million by which imports exceed exports. It has a balanced budget. Although more than one drachma out of four goes for defense, the government ended a recent year with a slight surplus -- $66 million. Greece has a decent reserve of almost a third of a billion dollars in gold and foreign exchange. It has a government not dependent on coalescing incompatible parties to obtain parliamentary majorities. In thus summarizing a few happy highlights, I don’t mean to minimize the vast extent of Greece’s problems. It is the poorest country by a wide margin in Free Europe, and poverty is widespread. At best an annual income of $60 to $70 is the lot of many a peasant, and substantial unemployment plagues the countryside, cities, and towns of Greece. There are few natural resources on which to build any substantial industrial base. Some years ago I wrote here:“Greek statesmanship will have to create an atmosphere in which home and foreign savings will willingly seek investment opportunities in the back ward economy of Greece. So far, most American and other foreign attempt have bogged down in the Greek government’s red tape and shrewdness about small points.”Great strides have been made. As far back as 1956, expanding tourism seemed a logical way to bring needed foreign currencies and additional jobs to Greece. At that time I talked with the Hilton Hotel people, who had been examining hotel possibilities, and to the Greek government division responsible for this area of the economy. They were hopelessly deadlocked in almost total differences of opinion and outlook.Today most of the incredibly varied, beautiful, historical sights of Greece have new, if in many cases modest, tourist facilities. Tourism itself has jumped from approximately $31 million to over $90 million. There is both a magnificent new Hilton Hotel in Athens and a completely modernized, greatly expanded Grande Bretagne, as well as other first-rate new hotels. And the advent of jets has made Athens as accessible as Paris or Rome –without the sky-high prices of traffic-choked streets of either.1.The title below that best expresses the ideas of this passage is[A] Greek income and expenditures. The improving economic situation in Greece.[C] The value of tourism.[D] Military expenditures.2.Many peasants earn less than[A] $60 a week.$2 a week.[C] $1 a day.[D] $10 a month.3.The Greek Government spends[A] more than 25%of its budget on military terms.More than its collects.[C] A third of a billion dollars in gold.[D] Less than 25% of its budget on military terms.4.According to the passage, Greece has[A] a dictatorship.a monarchy.[C] a single majority party.[D] too much red tape.5.Greece imports annually goods and materials[A] totaling almost $700 million.that balance exports.[C] that are paid by tourists.[D] costing $66 million.
(The Program-Federal Government Helps Minority Business)Federal efforts to aid minority businesses began in the 1960’s when the Small Business Administration (SBA) began making federally guaranteed loans and government-sponsored management and technical assistance available to minority business enterprises. While this program enabled many minority entrepreneurs to form new businesses, the results were disappointing, since managerial inexperience, unfavorable locations, and capital shortages led to high failure rates. Even 15 years after the program was implemented, minority business receipts were not quite two percent of the national economy’s total receipts.Recently federal policymakers have adopted an approach intended to accelerate development of the minority business sector by moving away from directly aiding small minority enterprises and toward supporting large, growth-oriented minority firms through intermediary companies. In this approach, large corporations participate in the development of successful and stable minority businesses by making use of government-sponsored venture capital. The capital is used by a participating company to establish a Minority Enterprise Small Businesses that have potential to become future suppliers of customers of the sponsoring company.MESBIC’s are the result of the belief that providing established firms with easier access to relevant management techniques and more job-specific experience, as well as substantial amounts of capital, gives those firms a greater opportunity to develop sound business foundations than does simply making general management experience and small amounts of capital available. Further, since potential markets for the minority businesses already exist through the sponsoring companies, the minority businesses face considerably less risk in terms of location and marketfluctuation. Following early financial and operating problems, sponsoring corporations began to capitalize MESBIC’s far abo ve the legal minimum of $500,000 in order to generate sufficient income and to sustain the quality of management needed. MESBIC’s are now emerging as increasingly important financing sources for minority enterprises.Ironically, MESBIC staffs, which usually consist of Hispanic and Black professionals, tend to approach investments in minority firms more pragmatically than do many MESBIC directors, who are usually senior managers from sponsoring corporations. The latter often still think mainly in terms of the ‘social responsibility approach’ and thus seem to prefer deals that are riskier and less attractive than normal investment criteria would warrant. Such differences in viewpoint have produced uneasiness among many minority staff members, who feel that minority entrepreneurs and businesses should be judged by established business considerations. These staff members believe their point of view is closer to the original philosophy of MESBIC’s and they are concerned that, unless a more prudent course if followed, MESBIC directors may revert to policies likely to re-create the disappointing results of the original SBA approach.1.Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?[A] The use of MESBIC’s for aiding minority entrepreneurs se ems to have greater potential for success than does the original SBA approach. There is a crucial difference in point of view between the staff and directors of some MESBIC’s.[C] After initial problems with management and marketing, minority businesses have begun to expand at a steady rate.[D] Minority entrepreneurs wishing to form new businesses now have several equally successful federal programs on which to rely.2.According to the passage, the MESBIC approach differ s from the SBA approach in that MES BIC’s[A] seek federal contracts to provide market for minority businesses.Encourage minority businesses to provide markets for other minority businesses.[C] Attempt to maintain a specified rate of growth in the minority business sector.[D] Rely on the participation of large corporations to finance minority businesses.3.Which of the following statements about the SBA program can be inferred from the passage?[A] The maximum term for loans made to recipient businesses was 15 years. Business loans were considered to be more useful to recipient businesses than was management and technical assistance.[C] The anticipated failure rate for recipient businesses was significantly lower than the rate that actually resulted.[D] Recipient businesses were encouraged to relocate to areas more favorable for business development.4.The author refers to the ‘financial and operating problems’ encountered by MESBIC’s primarily in order to[A] broaden the scope of the discussion to include the legal considerations of funding MESBIC’s through sponsoring companies.call attention to the fact that MESBIC’s must receive adequate funding in order to function effectively.[C] show that sponsoring companies were willing to invest only $500,000 of government-sponsored venture capi tal in the original MESBIC’s.[D] Compare SBA and MESBIC limits on minimum funding.5.It can be inferred from the passage that the attitude of some MESBIC staff member toward the investments preferred by some MESBIC directors can be best described as [A] disappointing.Indifferent.[C] Shocked.[D] Defensive. 1. Even 15 years after the program was implemented minority business receipts were not quite two percent of the national economy’s total receipts.【参考译文】甚至在这个计划执行后15年,少数民族工业的收入还不到全国总收入的2%。

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis's Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack's dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name? ”“Are you sure you want to hear it? It's a scary story,” warned Jack.“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If th ere were anything to be scared of, you wouldn't have chosen this place!”“OK, but don't say I didn't warn you,” said Jack, and he began his tale.“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different—it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen t o advice.”“‘You are clearing too much land’,warned one old man. ‘The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it.’‘Silly fool’,said Dennis to himself. ‘If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous!’”“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”“What happened? ” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.“The land hit back—just as the old man warned, ” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the riverand dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”“What a stupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants can't…” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Tom's face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.56.The underlined word “dare” in Paragraph 1 is c losest in meaning to ________.A. courageB. assistanceC. instructionD. challenge57. What would you do if you were lost in the dark forest at night? The first sensible lesson is that you shouldn’t bother trying to find your way in the dark at all, but just stay put until dawn. Be cause then you won’t trip over things? No, mainly because yo u’ll have an idea of direction. The sun rises in the east. But yo u will be amazed at how many people forget they know that. A pparently, the area underneath a holly bush provides a good makeshift shelter — they are thick, and evergreen. The next t hing to do — or rather not to do — is panic, for the obvious re ason that unless there is someone there to hear you scream, i t will get you nowhere. Just try to think of nice, happy things. There is always a point in films when a person who is lost in t he desert or the snow, dehydrated(脱水的) and exhausted, comes across a set of their own footprints and realizes they have just walked in a huge, round circle. It is wrong to owe it to the unequal strengths or different lengths o f your legs. Experiments prove that, without the sun or the mo on (or landmarks) as a fixed guide, lots of small errors add upover time so the brain can’t correctly identify the “straight ahe ad” direction. To just get out of somewhere, pick a spot on the horizon and just head for it.There are several ways to find directions in the dark, and by f ar the best is to establish north using the stars. Most people c an identify the Plough, which is part of Ursa Major. It looks a l ot like a saucepan. The Plough rotates through the sky, but let ’s imagine the saucepan lying horizontally (水平地), with its handle on the left. You need to trace a line from th e star at the right-hand base of the pan, through the star at the right-hand rim (边沿), and follow it upwards; the north star is roughly five times t he distance between those two “pointer” stars. Then drop a ve rtical line from the North Star to the horizon and that’s north.“Tonight is very cloudy and I can’t see the Plough.” Maybe luc kily, it is quite windy. Keep in mind that almost all of our weath er comes from a south-westerly direction. (This only works if you are in the British Isl es). To find the direction, you can throw light bits of dried-out grass in the air and see which way they blow; or, if there a re clouds and patches of clear sky, see which way they blow across the stars. You can also get an idea of direction from leggy plants. If they look as if they have been blown over, they will probably be pointing north-east. If they are simply leaning in one direction as they grow, t here’s a good chance that is south (they will be reaching towa rds the sun). The last thing to do is to judge your direction and off you go.12. What might be the best title of the passage ?A. How to survive in the forestB. How to protect yourself in the forestC. How to direct your way out of the wildD. What to do if you are lost13. Which of the following pictures matches the description of the position of the north star?14. Why will people often walk in a circle if they are lost in the desert or the snow?A. Because without anything to refer to for directions, the brai n will be confused by errors.B. Because one of the legs is longer and stronger than the other.C. Because the desert or the snow usually covers a large are a for people to get across.D. Because people usually feel dehydrated and exhausted in t he desert or the snow.15. If you were lost in Taklimakan Desert in , _________ would NOT be dependable for you to identify the directions.A. the sunB. the North StarC. windD. the moon阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

(The Most Important of All Human Qualities is a Sense of Humor)Biologically, there is only one quality which distinguishes us from animals: the ability to laugh. In a universe which appears to be utterly devoid of humor, we enjoy this supreme luxury. And it is a luxury, for unlike any other bodily process, laughter does not seem to serve a biologically useful purpose. In a divide world, laughter is a unifying force. Human beings oppose each other on a great many issues. Nations may disagree about systems of government and human relations may be plagued by ideological factions and political camps, but we all share the ability to laugh. And laughter, in turn, depends on that most complex and subtle of all human qualities: a sense of humor Certain comic stereotypes have a universal appeal. This can best be seen from the world-wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin’s early films. The little man at odds with society never fails to amuse no matter which country we come from. As that great commentator on human affairs, Dr. Samuel Johnson, once remarked, ‘Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have always laughed in the same way.’A sense of humor may take various forms and laughter may be anything from a refined tingle to an earth quaking roar, but the effect is always the same. Humor helps us to maintain a correct sense of values. It is the one quality which political fanatics appear to lack. If we can see the funny side, we never make the mistake of taking ourselves too seriously. We are always reminded that tragedy is not really far removed from comedy, so we never get a lop sided view of things. This is one of the chief functions of satire and irony. Human pain and suffering are so grim; we hover so often on the brink of war; political realities are usually enough to plunge us into total despair. In such circumstances, cartoons and satirical accounts of somber political events redress the balance. They take thewind out of pompous and arrogant politicians who have lost their sense of proportion. They enable us to see that many of our most profound actions are merely comic or absurd. We laugh when a great satirist like Swift writes about war in Gulliver’s Travels. The Lilliputians and their neighbors att ack each other because they can’t agree which end to break an egg. We laugh because we meant to laugh; but we are meant to weep too. It is too powerful a weapon to be allowed to flourish. The sense of humor must be singled out as man’s most important quality because it is associated with laughter. And laughter, in turn, is associated with happiness. Courage, determination, initiative – these are qualities we share with other forms of life. But the sense of humor is uniquely human. If happiness is one of the great goals of life, then it is the sense of humor that provides the key.1.The most important of all human qualities is[A] a sense of humor.A sense of satire.[C] A sense of laughter.[D] A sense of history.2.The author mentions about Charlie C haplin’s early films because[A] they can amuse people.Human beings are different from animals.[C] They show that certain comic stereotypes have a universal appeal.[D] They show that people have the same ability to laugh.3.One of the chief functions of irony and satire is[A] to show absurdity of actions.to redress balance.[C] to take the wind out of politicians.[D] to show too much grimness in the world.4.What do we learn from the sentence ‘it is too powerful a weapon to be allowed to flourish in t otalitarian regimes?’[A] It can reveal the truth of political events with satire. It can arouse people to riot.[C] It shows tragedy and comedy are related.[D] It can make people laugh.5.Who is Swift?[A] A novelist.A poet.[C] A dramatist.[D] A essayist.Vocabulary1.devoid 没有,缺乏2.plague n. 1.In a divided world, laughter is a unifying force.【参考译文】在分裂的世界中,笑是一种促成一致〔团结〕的力量。

Nowadays some students in middle school date with their classmates.According to a new study from the University of Georgia, those students have much worse study skills and are four times more likely to stop schooling. They use twice as much alcohol and tobacco than their single classmates."Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development of these relationships," said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and Head of the department of Health Promotion and Behaviour.Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grades. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviours, including the use of drugs and alcohol.Their teachers completed questionnaires about the students7 academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers.Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school."At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and students with highest dating as havingthe worst study skills," according to the journal article.Study skills refer to behaviours that lead to academic success such as doing homework for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters."Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications (并发症)of dating a co-worker," Orpinas said."When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner (前伴侣)dating someone else.It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and distract (分散注意力)them from studying.""Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school," Orpinas concluded.1.We can learn from the passage that students who date in middle school may _____.A.be less likely to use alcohol and 真题典例【2011·广东卷】ln the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people.I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others.Often, we try every waypossible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the ki ndness that’s in them.Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual.People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me.At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in twentyfour years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to the other dr ivers, “I have a problem here.I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood.Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way.But those are few and far between.More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we’re brave when we’re scared.( )1.The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ________. 语鹅市安置阳光实验学校2016高考英语阅读理解(二轮)训练(1)写人记事(阅读理解)Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road,I came to a crossing with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but as I drove near the light,it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left, right and behindme.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that n ight, the question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract (契约)we all have with each other. It’s not only the law,but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don’t go through red lights.Trust is our first inclination (倾向).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on mutual (相互)trust, not distrust. We do what we say we’ll do; we show up when we say we’ll show up; and we pay when we say we’ll pay.We trust each other in these matters, and we’re angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.1.Why did the author get impatient while driving?( )A.He was lonely on the road.B.He was slowed down by a truck.C.He got tired of driving too long.D.He came across too many traffic lights.2.What was the author’s immediate action when the traffic light turned red?( )A.Stopping still.B.Driving through it.C.Looking around for other cars.D.Checking out for traffic police.3.The event made the author strongly believe that .A.traffic rules may be unnecessaryB.doubting others is human natureC.patience is important to driversD.a society needs mutual trust4.Why was the author proud of himself?( )A He kept his promise.B.He held back his anger.C.He followed his inclination.D.He made a right decision.语篇解读:本文为记叙文,题材属于人物故事类。

A recent study of ancient and modern elephants has come up with the unexpected conclusion that the African elephant is divided into two distinct (不同的) species. The discovery was made by researchers at York and Harvard Universities when they were examining the genetic relationship between the ancient woolly mammoth and mastodon to modern elephants—the Asian elephant, African forest elephant, and African savanna elephant.Once they obtained DNA sequences (序列) from two fossils (化石), mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths. The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the African forest elephant have been distinct species for several million years. The divergence of the two species took place around the time of the divergence of Asian elephants and woolly mammoths. This result amazed all the scientists. There has long been debate in the scientific community that the two might be separate species, but this is the most convincing scientific evidence so far that they are indeed different species.Previously, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African forest elephants were two populations of the same species, despite the elephants’ significant size differences. The savanna elephant has an average shoulder height of 3. 5 metres while the forest elephant has an average shoulder height of 2. 5 metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tons, roughly double the weight of the forest elephant. But the fact that they look so different does not necessarily mean they are different species. However the proof lay in the analysis of the DNA.Alfred Roca, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, said, “We now have to treat the forest and savanna elephants as two different units for conservation purposes. Since 1950, all African elephants have been conserved as one species. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority (优先) for conservation purposes.”1. 【2014高考英语二模试题】A good reader becomes sooner or later a good book buyer. The sooner, the better。
The reading done in a book drawn from a library can not be so pleasant at the moment nor so permanently useful as the reading done in our own copy.A book which is worth reading is likely to be read more than once, and at each reading some idea or some statement makes such an impression that we wish to refer to it again. Some readers underline the page as they read, but I find that a page which I have underlined can not give me so many fresh impressions as one which has no marks on it.My habit is to make my own index(索引)of a book as I read.I put down the number of the page and a word or two to identify the thought or the fact which I get from it.On a second or third reading I am likely to double or triple the size of this index. This is my substitute for underlining. Most of the books in my library are so indexed that I can find quickly the passage which from time to time I wish to look up.To use a book in this way, organizing it for continued usefulness year after year,we must,of course,do our reading in a copy which belongs to us.The books I buy are chiefly those of less expensive editions. As I have grown older and the number of books on my shelves has increased,I appre—ciate editions which do not take much room.By careful and continuous selection I keep my librarv down to ten thousand books. This would be,of course, too large a number for any but a professional scholar or writer. But my advice to a book lover is to weed but his library at least once every two years, giving away the books which are not likely to be read again。

阅读理解(4)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Further, since potential markets for the minority businesses already exist through the sponsoring companies, the minority businesses face considerably less risk in terms of location and market fluctuation. Following early financial and operating problems, sponsoring corporations began to capitalize MESBIC’s far ab ove the legal minimum of $500,000 in order to generate sufficient income and to sustain the quality of management needed. These staff members believe their point of view is closer to the original philosophy of MESBIC’s and they are concerned that, unless a more prudent course if followed, MESBIC directors may revert to policies likely to re-create the disappointing results of the original SBA approach.1.Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?[A] The use of MESBIC’s for aiding minority entrepreneurs s eems to have greater potential for success than does the original SBA approach. There is a crucial difference in point of view between the staff and directors of some MESBIC’s.[C] After initial problems with management and marketing, minority businesses have begun to expand at a steady rate.[D] Minority entrepreneurs wishing to form new businesses now have several equally successful federal programs on which to rely.2.According to the passage, the MESBIC approach differ s from the SBA approach in that ME SBIC’s[A] seek federal contracts to provide market for minority businesses.Encourage minority businesses to provide markets for other minority businesses.[C] Attempt to maintain a specified rate of growth in the minority business sector.[D] Rely on the participation of large corporations to finance minority businesses.3.Which of the following statements about the SBA program can be inferred from the passage?[A] The maximum term for loans made to recipient businesses was 15 years. Business loans were considered to be more useful to recipient businesses than was management and technical assistance.[C] The anticipated failure rate for recipient businesses was significantly lower than the rate that actually resulted.[D] Recipient businesses were encouraged to relocate to areas more favorable for business development.4.The author refers to the ‘financial and operating problems’ encountered by MESBIC’s primarily in order to[A] broaden the scope of the discussion to include the legal considerations of funding MESBIC’s through sponsoring companies.call attention to the fact that MESBIC’s must receive adequate funding in order to function effectively.[C] show that sponsoring companies were willing to invest only $500,000 of government-sponsored venture cap ital in the original MESBIC’s.[D] Compare SBA and MESBIC limits on minimum funding.5.It can be inferred from the passage that the attitude of some MESBIC staff member toward the investments preferred by some MESBIC directors can be best described as [A] disappointing.Indifferent.[C] Shocked.[D] Defensive. 1. Even 15 years after the program was implemented minority business receipts were not quite two percent of the national economy’s total receipts.【参考译文】甚至在这个计划执行后15年,少数民族工业的收入还不到全国总收入的2%。
