2018-2019学年高二上学期期末教学质量监测英语试卷2018-2019学年高二上学期期末教学质量监测英语试卷一、阅读理解I first began experiencing anxiety and depression at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first anxiety and depression would come and go, it eventually became a constant part of my life.I was so eager to find the solution to overcoming my anxiety and depression that I tried everything from when I was in college to graduate school: mood-changing medication, special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Despite this, I still felt I hadn’t even come close to managing the problem. But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine I was reading that talked about how dogs were able to help people with anxiety and depression. The very next day, I decided to get a dog—a corgi. When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home. I didn’t realize how much he would change my life. It didn’t happen right away, howe ver.Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my anxiety and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feeling again. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and give up. That’s when I saw Buddy.Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, “There’s no time to be sad; the world is amazing!” And for the first time in my life, my life was changing. I really was a new person. This was my new beginning. It’s been more than a year since that day, and I’ve never spent another morning unable to get out of bed. I’ve not cried myself to sleep or spent my days stuck with fear and regret. Sure, I still have days when I feel sad or anxious. But with Buddy, my best friend, by my side, I’ve finally learned how to manage these feelings and emotions.1.According to the first two paragraphs, the author ________.A. has been a school bully for yearsB. suffered from depression since collegeC. tried many ways to fight depression but nothing workedD. felt less depressed after taking medication and doing yoga2.How did the author know having a dog might help with her depressionA. a doctor put it forward to her.B. She read it in an article by chance.C. She heard it from some other depression sufferers.D. She found out herself after spending some time with a corgi.3.How does the author feel in the last paragraphA. hopefulB. AnxiousC. ConfusedD. DoubtfulBritish scientists have discovered the willow trees planted at an angle could increase sugars for biofuel production.Willow is a fast-growing species. It is already used to produce fuels for the renewable heating and power market. In future it could also help to produce biofuel to power vehicles. It has been known that when willows growing in the wild are blown sideways, they tend to produce more sugars. But for a while it has not been known why this happens.Researchers at Imperial College London, led by Dr NicholasBrereton and Dr Michael Ray of the Department of Life Sciences, have now solved the mystery. When the tree is blown sideways, its genes (基因) produce large numbers of sugar molecules (分子) to straighten the tree upwards.“This is an important breakthrough. Our stud y now shows that natural genetic changes are related to these differences. And this could well be the key to unlocking the future for green energy from willow,” said Dr Brereton. The research was carried out under lab conditions. The willows were grown at an angle of 45 degrees. They were compared to willows which grow naturally straight upwards. The team then looked for the same effect among the willows growing on the Isle of Orkney where strong winds cause the trees to bend at extreme angles. They discovered that the Orkney trees produce five times the amount of sugars found in willows grown in sheltered conditions.Willow is widely planted across the UK. The results show that biofuel crops such as willows could be grown in climatically changeable conditions where chances of growing food crops are limited. The study is published in Biotechnology for Biofuels.1.What may happen when willows are planted in strong windsA. They stop growing.B. Few sugars are produced.C. They try to grow sideways.D. Changes in genes take place.2.The Orkney willows ________.A. are unusually rich in sugarsB. grow naturally straight upwardC. look taller than ordinary willowsD. are stronger than those growing in labs3.Farmers living in changeable climate _______.A. use biofuel for heating and powerB. are encouraged to grow biofuel cropsC. can plant different kinds of food cropsD. should make their willows grow straight4.Where does this passage most probably come fromA. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name—phubbers (低头族).Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. a doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfe in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone, a chain of similar events eventually leads to a series of destruction.Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.Your health is the first to bear the consequence (后果) of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your ce ll phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “The neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report. But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported. It can also cost you your life. Patience is a word that has appeared in many forms over the past two months.I don’t see myself as being the most patient person i n the world but there was something that struck me on my first week of work. I had just finished a session with two students and just as they were leaving the classroom, one of the students turned back and said, “Thank you for your patience.” That was an e arly reminder of the importance of being patient as a teacher. It also made me reflect on the language teachers that I have had over the years, ones that demonstrated a high level of patience and understanding that has shaped my language learning path. Moreover, it helped me to realize the importance of demonstrating patience in the classroom as it can be the difference between building someone’s confidence in a language or breaking down their confidence entirely.Living my life constantly in French is not easy but the people of Quebec are very patient. They repeat things several times and they are more than happy to wait while I find the correct words to express myself and find the correct word order. It’s a learningprocess but with the patience of others, the process is slightly less nervous. At the end of the day, making mistakes shows you are trying and I think that is greatly appreciated by Quebecers. When I first arrived in Matane I kept getting headaches from having to concentrate all the time due to the language and even overhearing other people’s conversations was hard work! I had to keep reminding myself that it would take time, and two months later the headaches are a distant memory and my ears have become more tuned to their accent. The key is to be patient with yourself.1.According to Paragraph 2, what does the writer think is important as a teacherA. Understanding.B. Patience.C. Confidence.D. Help.2.In a small town called Matane, which language do the local people speakA. English.B. Spanish.C. French.D. Italian.3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passageA. The writer first noticed the importance of patience on hearing a student’s appreciation.4.What is the best title for the passageA. Patience Brings a SurpriseB. Attractions of QuebecC. My Work Experience in QuebecD. Learn a Foreign Language with PatienceThese days, it seems like everything is going digital. You can find almost everything on the Internet. Many people find this way of life more convenient, because they can complete their daily chores(琐事) from the comfort of their own home.Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful than hitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or boring long queues. With online shopping, it’s just you and your computer. It’s like you have the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don’t have opening and closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. If you want to, you can even place an online shopping order at three o’clock in the morning! In the busy modern world, there are clearly many advantages to online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several cons… With online shopping, you can’t try before you buy, and that’s a definite disadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find they do n’t fit very well. It’s always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or when sleeves are too short… Sometimes, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A piece of clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in real life.In these cases, you want to return the item, but here lies the biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay for your order’s delivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges are often very expensive, which suddenly make online shopp ing seem a little less convenient… That’s why I don’t choose to shop online very frequently. For now, I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, whereI know exactly what I’m buying!1.What’s the main idea of the third paragraphA. The differences among online stores.B. The methods of online shopping.C. The opening time of online stores.D. The advantages of online shopping.2.Which word can replace the underlined word“cons”in the fourth paragraphA. Comparisons.B. Concentration.C. Disadvantages.D. Disagreements.3.According to the author, what is the biggest problem with online shoppingA. The waste of time and electricity.B. The expensive charges for the returned item.C. The disadvantages of not trying before you buy.D. The lost experience of walking in a real shop.4.What’s the author’s attitude towards online shoppingA. Disapproval.B. Doubtful.C. Curious.D. Favorable. Are you a morning person You might not like the findings in this new research. From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling on the red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list: seriously messed-up biological clocks. One day on Mars - which scientists refer to as the solar day, or“sol”- is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of European scientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.Circadian rhythms are the body’s natural cycles of rest and waking, which tend to follow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These natural rhythms - which play a role in biological functions including brain wave activity and hormone production - can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差)and night shift work. For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy, 24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to have shorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks were more likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clocks were more likely to die off. What does this all have to do with space travel Since the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clocks could suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational speed of the red planet.Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the new conditions or“learn”to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained,“Learning is not a likely option.”In other words: Sorry, super-early risers - NASA might not want you for the next Mars mission.1.From the passage, people can face the following troubles living on Mars EXCEPT ______.A. absence of airB. a lot of fierce creaturesC. lack of drinking waterD. messed-up biological clocks2.According to scientists, how long does one day on Mars lastA. 24 hours.B. 23 hours and 23 minutes.C. 24 hours and 37 minutes.D. 12 hours and 37 minutes.3.How did the researchers study what effect living on Mars has on sleepA. By comparing different mice.B. By analyzing computer data.C. By experiments in spaceships.D. By observing and judging.4.Life on Mars would seriously mess with your sleep because ________.A. the brain wave activity will be interruptedB. the body’s natural cycles can be shortenedC. hormone production will hurt biological functionsD. the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth二、七选五Most successful people attach importance to why learning from mistakes is important. Students of English as a foreign language often ask teachers this question. They naturally suppose that reading an English newspaper will be a good way of improving their knowledge of the language. But they are frequently disappointed because they cannot understand popular newspapers and think"quality new spapers, the Times, the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, will be even more difficult. In fact, the opposite is usually the case. Popular newspapers are written for people who haven't much time for reading and who, perhaps, do not read as fast or enjoy re ading as much as people who buy"quality""newspapers. So the editors try to attract the readers attention with shocking headlines in big black type. The headlines do not expl ain the content of the news item underneath. On the contrary, they are often designed to puzzle the readers so that they will be persuaded to read the item to find out the mean ing of the headline.Editors are also afraid that readers will not be patient enough to read a long paragraph . Therefore almost every sentence becomes a paragraph in itself. but the reporters wh o write for these newspapers must provide a lot of background information in these sente nces so they often state facts about a person's age, job, looks and recent career in one long phrase, instead of dealing with each in turn. The result is that the first paragraph about a visiting politician may begin: "Handsome, grey-haired, 53-year-old Ruritanian Foreign Minister, Janos Kopp, recently arrived in London, and said yesterda y……"Some sociologists believe that ordinary people do not really prefer these attempts to make reading easy for them to the more informative style of"quality "newspapers. Peo ple who are seriously interested in the world affairs and such things as economics, poli tics and art like to read long, well-informed articles about them. These same features are the reason why" newspapers are much more suitable as models for foreign students of English.【答案】One possible versionForeign students of English often take it for granted that"quality "newspapers are much harde r to follow than popular newspapers 【高分句型一】(要点1)Actually, the editors of popular newspapers usually create shocking headlines and one-sente nce paragraphs to attract the readers, which turns out to be confusing.【高分句型二】(要点2、3)Different from popular newspapers, "quality" newspapers contain more information. So th ey are better choices for the students who want to improve their knowledge of English.(要点4)【解析】高分句型一:Foreign students of English often take it for granted that"quality "newspapers are much harde r to follow than popular newspapers译文:学英语的外国学生常常想当然地认为,"高质量"的报纸比流行的报纸更难阅读.分析:这句话使用it作形式宾语,that引导宾语从句.高分句型二:Actually, the editors of popular newspapers usually create shocking headlines and one-sente nce paragraphs to attract the readers, which turns out to be confusing.

Doctors ar e starting to find more and more information that suggests a c onnection between exercise and brain development. Judy Ca meron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, s tudies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully devel oped. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercis e to think better. As she says, “while we already know that ex ercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physi cal changes in the brain.”The effects of exercise on brain development can even be se en in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of mov ement and physical activity show greater brain development t han babies who are less physically active. Even a little move ment can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many l earning disabilities that children have in primary school or hig h school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babi es need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and m emory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to con nect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret. Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell Univers ity studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very di fficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just lik e the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not b e too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as wit h yoga or tai-chi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not h ave been used for a long time. For most people, any type of p hysical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The ma in aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain c an benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a we ek.8. What is the main idea of this passage?A. How exercise makes people strong.B. How to get good scores on a test.C. How exercise helps the brain.D. How the brain can change.9. According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?A. Ariana caught another whiff(难闻的味道) and tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Ashley only moved closer and continued talking. Ariana felt trapped. She wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn’t smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting her feelings? Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw in the trash, thankful for the excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley’s hair was tangled(乱糟糟的) , and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her seat, vowing(发誓) that she would not sit with Ashley tomorrow. When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mother, “There’s a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”“She’s probably having a tough day,” said her mother.“No, it’s not just one day. She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”“I don’t think you understand Ashley’s situation, so let me ask you this...,” Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school?”“You do,” answered Ariana.“Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day? And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed?”“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.“Do you live in a nice home? Do you have enough to eat?”Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley couldn’t help her situation because she was only seven years old—the same age as Ariana. Grown-ups are supposed to take care of kids.“Why doesn’t her family take better care of her?” Ariana asked.“Not all children live in the best situation,” her mother said. “The best thing you can do for Ashley is to treat her with kindness and sympathy.”注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

AMagazine sales have generally been falling since the day the inventor of the Internet said, “Hey, why don’t I invent the Internet?”But the latest ABC figures, released this week, show that sales of certain titles are actually going up. News and current affairs magazines are becoming more popular—but celebrity (名人), gossip and fashion publications are still struggling.“Gossip and celebrit y news is rarely something that requires detailed analysis—so it’s best suited to bite-sized content on social media,” says Ian Burrell, media columnist for The Drum. “Once it’s out there, it’s quickly shared and readers move on to the next star. No one wa nts to wait a week to read about it in a print magazine.”Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, wrote this week: “There’s now too much writing online, and in an era of fake news, where you get your analysis from has never been more important. As newspapers and magazines are finding out, if you can publish writing that is consistently better than what can be found online, people will pay.”But many editors are struggling to strike the right balance between physical and digital content. They are faced with the choice of either posting all their articles online for free so the magazine stays relevant, or charging readers money to protect the financial future of the brand. As Burrell points out, most readers are hungry for a deeper understanding of the fast-moving changes in global news and politics rather than seeking to escape from it by burying their heads in celebrity gossip and entertainment stories.Serious times call for serious journalism. While general-interest daily news has been turned into an almost universally available commodity (商品) by the Internet, specialist journalism is still a service people value and think they can’t get elsewhere.21. What does Ian Burrell think of celebrity news?A. It isn’t worth reading.B. It isn’t worth analyzing.C. It should be read carefully.D. It should appear on magazines.22. What did Fraser Nelson mainly stress?A. The importance of news sources.B. The significance of current affairs.C. The value of newspapers and magazines.D. The balance between physical and digital content.23. What can be inferred from Burrell’s opinion in Paragraph 6?A. Most readers are fond of rapid changes.B. Most readers tend to escape from reality.C. Most readers like entertainment news best.D. Most readers show great interest in global news and politics.24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Where Magazines Will Go in the Future.B. What Makes Some Magazines Disappear.C. How Magazines Are Surviving the Digital Age.D. Why People Are Still Reading Fashion Publications.BIt’s exciting to imagine how future humans will have solved the problems we have now, or what amazing new inventions will make our lives more convenient and interesting. We asked top scientists to share their predictions on what the world will be like in a century. Ifthey’re right, the 2114 is going to be really cool.1. Robots will do your chores and more.Robots will be doing most of our jobs, from building homes to teaching math. There are already robots that clean floors and pump gas. In the future they will be more complicated and useful. Unfortunately, with robots taking all the jobs, unemployment will be high.2. You will read minds.Speaking of being social, we will communicate in an entirely different way. Forget texts and emails. Mindreading technology will allow us to send thoughts to each other without speaking a word. We will also be able to send thoughts to objects around us.(Instead of pressing “start” on the microwave, you could just think “start”.) Meanwhile, chips implanted(植入) in our brains will improve memory and intelligence.3. Your car will drive you.Today, around 30,000 Americans die in car accidents each year. One hundred years from now, accidents will be a thing of the past. According to Mark Safford, consultant or the U.S. department of Transportation, future cars will drive themselves. These electric cars will communicate with other cars on the road to travel safely in close formation at high speeds.4. You will eat fake meat.Raising animals is not an efficient way to produce food, and it harms the environment. Cows, chickens, and pigs eat a lot, and then we have to deal with all that poop(粪便). What’s more, that poop can poison lakes, rivers, and streams. Today, scient ists can “grow” meat in a lab from animal cells, but it’s expensive and not very delicious. In the future, they will have perfected the process. You’ll order hamburgers that come from factories, not cows. Scientists may even find ways to make lab grown meat tastier and healthier than the real thing.25.According to the passage, what is likely to happen when robots become more common in the future?A. People will be much lazier.B. More people will lose their jobs.C. People may become physically weaker.D. More people may become less intelligent.26. Mind-reading technology will help people to ________.A. have a good memoryB. talk to other creaturesC. read books efficientlyD. convey messages silently 27. According to the passage, in the future cars will be ________.A. less popularB. more expensiveC. much easier to operateD. much smaller and lighter28. Future meat will be ________.A. much more harmlessB. less tasty but healthierC. more organic and deliciousD. more environmentally friendlyCThe days of having to carry a phone charger everywhere could soon be over. Michigan researchers have revealed a major breakthrough in harvesting energy from human motion. They say it could lead to smart phones powered for a week by the motion of a swipe (重击).Michigan State University’s low-cost device, known as a nano generator, has already been tested. Scientists’ success fully operated an LED touch screen, a bank of 20 LED lights and a flexible keyboard, all with a simple touching or pressing motion and without the aid of a battery. The groundbreaking findings, published in the journal Nano Energy, suggest “We’re on the path toward wearable devices powered by human motion,” said Nelson Sepulveda, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and lead researcher of the project.“What I foresee, relatively soon, is the capability of not having to charge your cellphone for an entire week, for example, because that energy will be produced by your movement,” said Sepulveda, whose research is funded by the National Science Foundation.Electrical energy is created when the device is compressed by human motion. The completed device is as thin as a sheet of paper. The device used to power the LED lights was palm-sized, while the device used to power the touch screen was as small as a finger. Advantages such as being lightweight, flexible and low -cost could make it a promising and alternative method in the field of Mechanical-energy harvesting. The device also becomes more powerful when folded. Sepulveda said, “You can start with a large device, but when you fold it once again and again, it’s much smaller and has more energy. Now it may be small enough to put in a specially made heel of your shoe so it creates power each time your heel strikes the ground.”Sepulveda and his team are also developing technology that would transmit the power generated by the heel strike to, say, a wireless headset.29. The underlined word “device” in the second p aragraph probably refers to .A. a piece of equipmentB. a special kind of smart phoneC. a touch screenD. a flexible keyboard30. What can we learn about Nelson Sepulveda in the passage?A. He works as a journalist writing for Nano Energy.B. He plays a major role in the project of the nano generator.C. He invented a type of battery-free smart phone.D. He collects funds for the National Science Foundation.31. From the passage we know that the nano generator .A. becomes more powerful when kept flatB. has already come into market in the USAC. is light weight and flexible though expensiveD. makes it possible to produce power by walking32. The purpose of the passage is to.A. persuade people to buy the deviceB. bring in a new way to save energyC. introduce a breakthrough in scienceD. honor Nelson Sepulveda for his contributionsDPurpose of the WolfpacketThe Wolfpacket aims to inform students of current and relevant events and issues.
