Many expensive nutrition additives (添加剂) advertised on TV say they can improve your memory. But only ordinary food and healthy habits have been shown to work.
A research team from UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) has designed a four-step plan to improve your memory in just 14 days.
"It sounds like another advertisement, but it really works," says UCLA psychiatry (精神病学) professor Gary Small.
The team found the four-step plan improved memory function (功能) in teenagers under stress and older people. After a two-week study that included brain-teasers (脑筋急转弯), exercise and diet changes, test subjects' memories worked more efficiently.
Here's the programme:
Memory training: Train yourself with brain-teasers, crossword puzzles and memory exercises that train verbal (文字上的) skills throughout the day.
Healthy diet: Eat five rather than three meals a day. The food should be rich in omega-3 fats (omega-3脂肪), such as whole grains and vegetables that contain antioxidants (抗氧化剂). Having frequent meals helps increase blood glucose (血糖), the primary energy source for the brain.
Physical fitness: Have regular physical exercise such as walking, basketball or running, every day.
Stress reduction (减少): Perform stretching and relaxation exercises. Stress causes the body to release a chemical that can shrink (使缩小) the memory centres in the brain.
Before-and-after brain scans showed that test subjects experienced on average a 5 per cent increase in working memory. This suggests they were using their brains more efficiently. They also performed better on a cognitive (认知的) test.
A control group that didn't follow the plan showed no big changes.
"We've known for years that diet and exercise can help people keep their physical health, which is a key part of healthy aging," said Small. "But keeping mental health is just as important. Now we have evidence that people can improve their memories
through a programme of memory exercises and stress reduction."
61. Why did Small say " It sounds like another advertisement, but it really works"?
A. He is satisfied with his programme.
B. He is working at another advertisement.
C. He wants to advertise his program.
D. He wants to improve his memory.
62. Which of the following is NOT helpful to the memory?
A. Crossword puzzles.
B. Nutrition additives.
C. Grains and vegetables.
D. Playing basketball and running.
63. Which of the following is Small's conclusion from the program?
A. Diet and exercise can help people keep their physical health.
B. Eating three meals a day can help people improve their memories.
C. Ordinary food had nothing to do with people's memories.
D. People's memories can be improved through memory exercises.
64. A research team from UCLA started the programme with the purpose of ____________.
A. improving your memory by eating healthy food in just 14 days
B. advertising nutrition additives on TV
C. proving many nutrition additive advertisement are false
D. showing the relationship between memories and memory exercises

The 16-year-old girl Jessica Watson is said to be the youngest person to sail non-stop alone around the world. But her record has been questioned because someone thought that she has not sailed far enough. She will also not be recognized by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, as it was too dangerous for someone under 18 years old.
Ms Watson sailed into Sydney port on Saturday, seven months after leaving on a hard voyage. Family, friends and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd have gathered to greet her. Thousands of well-wishers waited at the port and watched from boats as Ms Watson sailed her pink, 10m boat over the finishing line. Many more Australians watched the event broadcast live on television. Watson said she was just an “ordinary girl who believed in her dream”.
Ms Watson left Sydney on 18 October, despite that some people disagreed to her plan. Watson traveled northeast through the South Pacific and across the equator (赤道), south to Cape Horn at the tip of South America, across the Atlantic Ocean to South Africa, through the Indian Ocean and around southern Australia. The route took her through some of the world’s most changeful waters, an d she battled through huge storms and suffered seven accidents of her boat.
People around the world have followed Ms Watson’s adventures on her blog, which she has daily updated (更新). On her blog, she wrote down beautiful sunrise over seas, the excitement of meeting a blue whale and the bright, terrible sight of a shooting star flying across the night sky above her boat. Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判) and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn’t seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities can’t be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.
Grown-ups can hardly find children’s games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, where it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.
It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has
a chance to win.
69. What is TRUE about children when they play games?
A. They can stop playing any time they like.
B. They can test their personal abilities.
C. They want to pick a better team.
D. They don’t need rules.
70. One of the reasons that a child likes playing games is that __________.
A. he can be someone other than himself
B. he can become popular among friends
C. he finds he is always lucky in games
D. he likes the place where he plays a game
71. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE about children who play games?
A. They have equal chances to win.
B. Everyone obeys the rules.
C. They are afraid of their partners.
D. The situation they think of is in their control.
72. The writer believes that __________.
A. children should make better rules for their games
B. children should invite grown-ups to play with them
C. children’s games can benefit them a lot
D. children play games without reasons
D
How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again! Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in their useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities for them to make a living. If a child has good parents, he is well fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always giving new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too common for them. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society just as he used to break the rules of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
73. According to paragraph 2, the writer thinks that ______________.
A. life for a child is fairly easy
B. only children are interested in life
C. a child is always loved whatever he does
D. if much is given to a child, he must do something to pay back
74. A young man ___________ if he expects to live in the way he wants.
A. should lose his heart to his work
B. should try to keep out of trouble
C. should spend most of his time enjoying himself
D. should build up his own position in society for himself
75. The main idea of the passage is that ______________.
A. children's time is the most enjoyable in one's life
B. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
C. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
D. one can enjoy what each age gives him though there are some pains
E
When I asked my daughter which item she would keep; the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said“the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?
Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,”says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救护车) to her rescue.
Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are , where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near——but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”
Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously ( 同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(存取) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.
76..How do you understand‘Point 1 —The telephone creates the need to communicate,6…’?
A. People don’t communicate without telephone.
B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.
C. People communicate more since telephone has been created.
D. People communicate more because of more traffic.
77 . Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones?
A. Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.
B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well as little secret to people.
C. Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.
D. Mobile phones are part of people’s life.
78.. Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people’s life?
a. Point 1.
b. Point2.
c. Point3.
d. Point 4.
e. Point 5.
A. c, d
B. a, e
C. a, c

Dear editor,
Last week, two students of our school suffered from stomachache because they ate some poisonous fried food outside campus. Nowadays in our country, some business people care little about people’s health and safety as long as they can make money. Some even sell polluted or poisonous food to consumers and this often leads to serious health problems. In order to prevent such tragedy happening again, we students should try to avoid buying food from the stores or stalls out of the school, and have meals in school dining rooms. Only in this way can we protect ourselves. Besides, the local government and the schoo l should take practical measures to ensure students’ health and life security .I’m expecting your advice and ideas.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua。
