PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system capable of preventing the leakage of information used in authenticating an article.
SOLUTION: A magnetic characteristic detection means 3 detects magnetic
characteristic from a data carrier having a layer of magnetic material having magnetic characteristics and a magnetic recording layer recording the data imparted, and a data reading means 4 reads an ID. When a terminal 2 sends the detected magnetic characteristic and the read ID to an authentication server 1, the authentication server 1 compares the magnetic characteristic with a previously stored magnetic characteristic to authenticate the data carrier. When the data carrier is the true one, related data corresponding to the ID are sent to the terminal 2. The terminal 2 displays the related data received to allow authentication, and enables the user to obtain the data related to the data carrier.
