My 12-year-old son and I ride bikes to and from his school every day. I accompany him on the 20-minute ride through Manhattan, drop him off and return at the end of day to pick him up. We always ride together; sometimes he leads; sometimes I do. And as we ride, we communicate the ways to minimize the dangers: Don’t go too fast, and watch out for doors suddenly swinging out from parked cars and jaywalking pedestrians, etc. Some friends worry about the risk of riding in traffic, but is there a better way to let my son know how to deal with traffic dangers?
But recently he requested me to start hanging back a half block or so. This way he could enjoy the feeling of riding on his own, with the security of knowing that I was nearby in case he needed me. This is healthy, of course, as my son needs space to develop independence in preparation for his inevitable departure from home. However, that means soon he will want to ride to school on his own, and I will no longer have this wonderful routine. “Let your childre n go if you want to keep them.” I understand this and am trying to let my son go in age-appropriate phases, but I still suffer. It’s one of the most troubling experiences of parenthood — recognizing that your presence is becoming less welcome.
My dilemma as a husband mirrors the concern I feel as a parent. My wife has just left on a six-month mission to cover the situation in Libya. In the days leading up to her departure, we spoke openly about the possibility, however unlikely, that she might be killed. But while I influence her decisions, I do not control t hem. Finally, it was her decision.
I know that letting go is the wisest path in this case too. As we travel through life’s phases, we must let go of so much. And I don’t think it gets easier with practi ce. But maybe just accepting that eventually we will have to let go is the secret to living a full life.
36. The writer keeps his son company on his daily ride to school to________.
A .build up his strength B. teach his son to ride in traffic

jobless man applied for the position of "office boy" at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched hi m cleaning the floor as a test.
"You are employed," he said. "Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start."
The man replied, "But I don't have a computer, neither an e-mail."
"I'm sorry," said the HR manager. "If you don't have an e-mail, that means you do not exist. And whoever doesn't exist cannot have the job."
The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only ten dollars in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to do or. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his
capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars.
The man realized that he can survive in this way, and started to go every day earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US.
He started to plan his family's future and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker and chose a protection plan.
When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his e-mail. The man replied, "I don't have an e-mail."
The broker answered curiously, "You don't have an e-mail, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail?" The man thought for a while and replied, "Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!"

Environmentalists said our planet was doomed to die. Now one man says they are wrong.
Everyone knows the planet is in bad shape," thundered a magazine article last year. Species are being driven to die out at record rates, and the rivers are so poisonous that fish are floating on the surface, dead.
But there's a growing belief that what everyone takes for granted is wrong: things are actually getting better. A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world's environment. Rivers, seas, rain and the atmosphere are all getting cleaner. The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg, professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, is an attack on the misleading claims of environmental groups, and the "bad news" culture that makes people believe everything is getting worse.
Now the attacks are increasingly coming from left-wing environmentalists suc h as Lomborg, a former member of Greenpeace. The accusation is that, although the environment is improving, green groups-with profits of hundreds of mil-lions of pounds a year - are using scare tactics(谋略)to gain donations. Lomborg's book doesn't deny global warming - probably the biggest environmental threat - but destroys almost every other environmental claim with many official statistics.
The Worldwatch Institute claims that "deforestation(沙漠化) has been accelerating over the last 30 years". But Lomborg says that is simply rubbish. Since the dawn of agriculture the world has lost about 20 per cent of its forest cover, but in recent decades the forest area's depleting has come to a stop. According to UN figures, the area of forests has remained almost steady, at about 30 per cent of total land area, since the 1940s. Forests in countries such as the US, the UK and Canada have actually been expanding over the past 40 years. Despite all the warnings the Amazon rainforest has only shrunk by about 15 per cent.
Nor are all our species dying out. Some campaigners claim that 50 per cent of all species will have died out within 50 years. But other studies show only 0.08 per cent of species are dying out each year. Conservation efforts have been successful. Whales are no longer threatened and the bald eagle is off the endangered list.
Environmental groups claim that many of the improvements are the results of the success of their campaigns. Stephen Tindale, director of Greenpeace UK, said, "There
are important examples, such as acid rain and ozone, where things aren't as bad as predicted, and that's because behavior has changed."
48. In his book,The Skeptical Environmentalist, what is Lomborg's main argument
A. Our planet is in bad shape.
B Conservation efforts have been successful.
C. The total amount of forests in the world is not declining.
D. The world's environment is improving.
49. What is Lomborg's main accusation of environmentalists?
A. They scared people into making donations.
B. They overturned our basic assumptions about the world's environment.
C. They changed their behavior toward the environment.
D. They only told people bad news about the environment.
50. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. The total area of forests in the world has increased significantly.
B. The effects of global warming are not as bad as first expected.
C. In the last 50 years the number of whales has increased.
D. It appears that the bald eagle will now survive

It is said that there are about 40,000 different kinds of jobs in the
world. 51 “Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job which they are not suitable for. 52 Here are a few steps to help you think abut jobs which you might enjoy doing after school or university.
First, it is important to realize what kind of person you are, which special qualities make you different from everyone else and what you are interested in. 53 If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse instead of a big dog, that is a skill.
Then ask yourself this question: in the following three areas—skills with people, skills with information and skills with things—which are your best skills?
After examining your skill, the next step is research. To find out as many different
kinds of jobs as possible, go to the library and read books, magazines and
newspapers. 54
Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking! 55
A. We must know what our ideal jobs are.
B. There is a difference between an interest and a skill.
C. It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing
D. Choosing the right one itself is a difficult job.
E. “Chance” may play a more important part in that “decision”
F. Ask your friends about the work they do
G. Your parents may also give you some useful advice.

Until I was ten years old I was the same like everyone else. I used to climb tree, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly represent my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker . In the end I went into hospital for medical tests, I stayed for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, include one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at them under a microscope. Even after all that, nobody could give my disease the name and it is difficult to know what the future holds.
One problem is what I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after run a short way or had to stop and rest on halfway up the stairs.
