第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)The secret to living longer could be as simple as picking up your walking pace, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that walking at a brisk(快的) or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent for any cause of death.
This effect was even more obvious in older age group, with fast walkers over the age of 60 reducing their risk of death by a surprising 53 percent. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who led the study, explained, “A fast pace is generally five to six kilometers per hour, but it really depends on a walker’s fitness levels; an alternatives indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty.”
In the study, the researchers looked at the results of 4 surveys from 1224 to 2001, in which participants recorded their walking pace, as well as age, sex and BMI. The analysis showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for all-cause mortality(死亡率) compared with walking at a slow pace, while walking at a brisk or fast pace was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent.
The researchers hope the findings will encourage the development of public health message about the benefits of walking pace. Professor Stamatakis added, “These analyses suggest that increasing walking pace may be a straightforward way for people to improve heart health and risk for premature mortality--- providing a simple message for public health campaigns to promote.
“Especially in situations when walking more isn’t possible due to time pressures or a less walking-friendly environment, walking faster may be a good option to get the heart rate up--- one that most people can easily add to their lives.”
1、Who benefit most from walking fast?
A.Cancer sufferers. B.The elderly.
C.Those who have heart problems. D.Those who have high BMI.
2、What decides how fast a person can walk according to Professor Stamatakis? A.His/Her fitness levels. B.His/Her ages.
C.His/Her will. D.His/Her BMI.
3、Why can walking fast reduce death rate?
A.Most people like doing it. B.It benefits the heart.
C.It reduces cancer mortality. D.Most people can do it easily.
4、What is the main idea of the text?
A.Walking is easy exercise for people to do.
B.Walking has received little attention until now.
C.More and more people are walking fast for health.
D.A fast walking pace can benefit peop le’s health.
22.(8分)Russian police have started a new attempt to get drivers to slow down at zebra crossings by having painted horses as zebras walk across on the busiest streets in some of the big cities in an attempt to improve road safety and raise awareness among Russia’s notoriously (臭名昭著地) careless drivers.
The light grey horses, painted with black stripes, carried signs on their backs reading: “Careful, children are on their way to school.” The police sent the “zebras” to several different locations in the Russian capital, where officials in orange vests walked them over zebra crossings and handed out leaflets (传单) to passing drivers.
Some held up rainbow-coloured umbrellas over the painted animals to protect them from the rain. Russian roads are notoriously dangerous and drivers still rarely take the initiative (主动采取措施) to avoid pedestrians. Nearly half of all traffic accidents in the country’s big cities are caused by cars hitting pedestrians, and a third of those occur on crossings, according to traffic police figures published last month.
In the first six months of this year, 378 people were killed and more than 6, 600 injured on pedestrian crossings in Russia, according to police. In Moscow alone, 43 people were killed, including two children.
Though police officials said that only safe paint would be used on the animals, animal rights activists still disagreed with the idea, accusing the police of “treating animals like garbage”.
“Children understand that paints are bad for animals,” the Interf ax news agency
quoted president of Vita animal rights group Irina Novozhilova as saying.
Let’s hope this part of the campaign is over and animals are left out of future attempts to raise pedestrians’ awareness.
1、Why do Moscow police have “zebras” walk acr oss on the busiest streets?
A.To make a call on protecting animals.
B.To remind people zebras are in danger of extinction.
C.To tell people it is dangerous to cross streets.
D.To raise drivers’ awareness of road safety.
2、What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The zebras. B.The horses.
C.The policemen. D.The drivers.
3、From the text we can learn that ________.
A.most Russian drivers have realized the seriousness of the problem
B.Russian drivers often ignore traffic lights
C.Russian drivers seldom give way to pedestrians
D.the driving skills of Russian drivers are bad
4、What do animal rights activists think of the new attempt?
A.Drivers must slow down at pedestrian crossings.
B.These animals are ill-treated by the police.
C.The paints used on the horses are safe.
D.Road safety should be improved.
5、Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards the campaign? A.Critical. B.Reserved.
C.Doubtful. D.Positive.
23.(8分)The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.
Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.”
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultura l traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London, agrees that medi cinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

24.(8分)Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.
Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run - this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.
A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in oneself, Glenn
Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.
1、The first paragraph is intended to ________

D.Glenn organized a track team in college.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?

25.(10分)As any plane passenger will confirm, a crying baby is almost impossible to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Now scientists believe they may have worked out why. A baby’s cry pulls at the heartstrings(扣人心弦)in a way while other cries don’t, researchers found.
Researchers found that a baby’s cry ca n trigger unique emotional responses in the brain, making it impossible for us to ignore them—whether we are parents or not. Other types of cries, including calls of animals in great pain, fail to get the same response…suggesting the brain is programmed to respond specifically to a baby’s cry.
A team of Oxford University scientists scanned the brains of 28 men and women as
they listened to a variety of calls and cries. After 100 milliseconds --- roughly the time it takes to blink (眨眼) —two parts of the brain that respond to emotion lit up. Their response to a baby’s cry was particularly strong. The response was seen in both men and women—even if they had no children.
Researcher Dr Christine Parsons said, “You might read that men should just notice a baby and step over it and not see it, but it’s not true. There is a special processing in men and women, which makes sense from an evolutionary(演化的)view that both men and women would be responding to these cries.” The study was in people who were not parents, yet they are all responding at 100ms to these particular cries, so this might be a fundamental response present in all of us regardless of parental status.
Fellow researcher Katie Young said it may take a bit longer for someone to recognize their own child’s cries because they need to do more “fine-grained analysis”. The team had previously found that our reactions speed up when we hear a baby crying. Adults performed better on computer games when they heard the sound of a baby crying than after they heard recordings of adults crying.
1、A baby’s cry is difficult to ignore because it.
A.keeps on crying B.cries harder than adults
C.causes people great pain D.makes people feel strong emotions
2、The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 probably means “”A.remove B.avoid
C.cause D.cure
3、What may Christine Parsons agree to?
A.Almost everyone makes certain response to a baby’s cry.
B.A crying baby makes no sense to people without children.
C.Men pay less attention to a crying baby than women.
D.Parents can hardly recognize their own babies’ cries.
4、What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Why you can’t get a baby’s cry out of your head.
B.How to recognize different babies’ cries.
C.Why a baby is easy and likely to cry.
D.How to prevent a baby crying.

With the development of modern technology, there are a plenty of ways for us to contact people. WeChat is probably our favorite, mainly because of its convenient. We can keep in contact with friends whenever it is and wherever we are as long as Wi-Fi is available.
Another advantage is it is a relative cheap and quick way of communication. As messages get send and received instantly, the cost of making phone calls is cut down. Besides, music as well as pictures and videos are often downloaded through WeChat, but it is now a useful entertainment tool. However, problems exist at the meanwhile. For example, your identity can be easily revealed, so we should pay attention to protect our personal information.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student from Changsha, Hunan Province. This summer vacation I returned my hometown to visit my grandparents. To my surprise, I found out a number of factories took the place of the mountains that were once a beautiful landscape. The young villagers were employed earning several times more than before. But at the same time, the price is that rivers in my hometown are also polluted and people's health is damaged.
In my opinion, I think we should protect the environment while developing the economy. And As for how to protect the environment, I think we should stick to environment-friendly industries. Second, the government should play a supervisory role in heavily polluting industries.
I hope I can see the beautiful scenery of my hometown again one day.
Yours,
Li Hua。
