外在美和内在美辩证关系英语作文
The Beauty Inside and Out
Beauty is a word we hear a lot, but what does it really mean? When we think of someone beautiful, we might first picture a person who is good looking on the outside. They have pretty facial features, nice hair, and maybe a slim, toned body. But is that all there is to true beauty? I don't think so.
There's an age-old saying that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This means that whether someone is beautiful or not is based on how the person looking at them sees and judges their appearance. And you know what? I think this saying is wise, because I've noticed that different people are attracted to different types of looks. My best friend thinks that tall, muscular guys with buzzcuts are super handsome. But my other friend crushes on guys with long, floppy hair and a slender build. To each their own, as they say!
Anyway, to me, focusing only on outer appearances is forgetting a huge part of what true beauty encompasses. Sure, being physically attractive can make someone appear beautiful at first glance. But true, lasting beauty has as much – if not more – to do with what's on the inside as the outside. You've probably
heard the term "inner beauty" before. This refers to a person's personality, character, values, and essence that radiates from within.
The way I see it, inner and outer beauty go hand-in-hand and are intricately connected. Having one while lacking the other makes the total beauty package incomplete. Let me give you some examples to illustrate what I mean.
We've all known those people who are absolutely gorgeous to look at, whether it's the most popular kid at school or a celebrity plastered everywhere. They could be sculpted like a Greek god or goddess. But if when you get to know them better, they turn out to be mean, selfish, arrogant jerks, that outward beauty fades pretty quickly in your eyes. Conversely, there are plenty of people who may not be absolute knockouts on the outside, but are some of the kindest, most caring, funny, generous souls you'll ever meet. The more you're around them, the more you see their inner beauty shine through, making their looks almost an afterthought.
I think society often puts way too much emphasis on just being pretty or handsome on a superficial, physical level. We are surrounded by images in the media of supposedly flawless, perfect people who have been digitally edited, photoshopped,
and airbrushed to look like impossible standards of beauty. It can make lots of people, especially kids going through awkward stages, feel seriously insecure and inadequate about their own looks.
But if you take a step back, many of the most inspiring, influential, and fondly remembered people in history were not considered conventional paragons of beauty based on their outward appearances alone. I'm talking about amazing, revolutionary figures like Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and so many others. Their insides were overflowing with such compassion, courage, wisdom, and strength of character that it made whatever they looked like on the outside pale in comparison to their integrity as human beings.
My parents always tell me that inner beauty is what leaves the most lasting, positive impression on others. They say attributes like kindness, confidence, generosity, a positive spirit, intellectual curiosity, humor, hard work, determination, and authenticity are the qualities that draw people to someone and make them beautiful. They've noticed that some of the most magnetic, charming people they know might be considered fairly
ordinary looking, but have such vibrant personalities that you can't help but be drawn to them.
Likewise, they've encountered plenty of modeling-level gorgeous people who were nasty, shallow, and treated others terribly – instantly making them rotten on the inside, no matter how amazing their exterior packaging looked. As my dad says, "Having good looks is no guarantee of being a good, beautiful person. Sooner or later, your character will shine through and show your true colors." My mom always chimes in, "This is why it's so important to be beautiful on the inside, because that's the kind of beauty that never fades and only grows more stunning with time."
I try to always keep their words of wisdom in mind. Because here's the thing: Our bodies and looks are always going to change over the years. No matter how perfect someone's face and body may appear now during the prime of youth, one day wrinkles will form, hair will gray, and age will inevitably come for every single one of us. But what's inside – if it's cultivated, nurtured, and genuine – has the ability to become more beautiful and radiant by the day. That's the kind of beauty that never goes out of style and is worth more than a million supermodel looks.
So while I definitely care about taking care of my appearance and don't want to look like a total slob, I try not to get too hung up on my physical attractiveness. I figure as long as I stay relatively neat, clean, healthy, and put-together on the outside, the most important work is on polishing and beautifying my inner qualities. That way, no matter what kind of looks I'm born with, I'll be able to walk through life glowing with authentic beauty, confidence, and light from the inside out. Because to me, that's what true, timeless beauty is all about.。
