This date was the old midwinter festival in preChristian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day. Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions.Shops can make about 60 percent of their year’s income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macy’s, a famous shop in New York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve (24th December).By midDecember, almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD. In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bag of toys. Young children are told that he lives in the north of Finland and makes toys for them. By tradition, he brings the toys to children at midnight, on the night before Christmas. On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas. Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends; they also love the traditions. Scientists have isolated the antibiotics from microbes(微生物) found either from these insects or in soil particles trapped with them when they were caught by sticky tree risen up to 130 million years ago.Present-day antibiotics have nearly all been isolated from microbes that use them as a form of defense against their enemies and competitors. But since the introduction of antibiotics into medicine 50 years ago, an alarming number have become ineffective because many bacteria have developed resistance to the drugs. Research over the past two years has uncovered at least four antibiotics from the microbes and one has been able to kill modern drug-resistant bacteria that can cause potentially deadly diseases in humans.Raul Cano, who has pioneered the research at the California Polytechnic State University, said the ancient antibiotics had been successful in fighting drug-resistant strains of staphylococcus (葡萄球菌),a “superbug” that had threatened the health of patients in hospitals across the globe. He now intends to establish whether the antibiotics might have side effects. “The problem is how toxic they are to other cells and how easy they are to purify”,said Cano.Cano's findings have been acknowledged as a breakthrough. A biotechnology company, Ambergene, has been set up to develop the antibiotics into drugs. If any ancient microbes are revived (复活) that resemble present-day disease, they will be destroyed in case they escape and cause new epidemics. Drug companies will be anxious to study the chemical structures of the prehistoric antibiotics to see how they differ from modern drugs. They hope that one ancient molecule could be used as a basis to produce a range of drugs. However, even the use of ancient antibiotics may not stop the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. Stuart Levy warned that the bacteria would eventually evolve to fight back against the new drugs. “There might also be an enzyme already out there that can degrade it. So the only way to keep the life of that antibiotic going is to use it sensibly and not excessively,” he said.28. What problem has man faced since the use of antibiotics as medicineaccording to the passage?A. Antibiotics are very difficult to purify.B. Antibiotics do harm to human health.C. Antibiotics resemble some disease-causing bacteria.D. Antibiotics are becoming ineffective in fighting against bacteria.29. Why are Cano's findings considered as a breakthrough in science?A. His discoveries will help revive ancient microbes.B. His discoveries will put an end to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria.C. The company Ambergene has applied the prehistoric antibiotics to drugs.D. The prehistoric antibiotics proved more deadly against drug-resistant modern bacteria.30.According to the last paragraph, what is Stuart Levy's attitude towards the use of ancient antibiotics ?A. Cautious.B. Contradictory.C. Confident.D. Critical.31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Antibiotics-Dangerous or Not?B. Biotechnology Revealed Prehistoric SecretsC. Insect Antibiotics and Bacteria EvolutionD. Prehistoric Insects Might Help Invent New DrugsDNext week California will try to take cell phones from the hands of drivers, telling everyone from millionaires to workers that conversations behind the wheel must be on an earphone.Californians interviewed by Reuters mostly supported the law requiring hands-free phones in cars and banning cell phones entirely fordrivers under 18, which will take effect on Tuesday, though they were puzzled by a loophole(漏洞) that allows seemingly more dangerous text messaging. Some were doubtful about lawmakers, who they blamed for failing to build more freeways or public transportation in the face of increasingly crowded roads in the nation’s most populous stat e and said hands-free conversations were not safer.KFI-AM radio talk-show host John Kobylt told Reuters. “It's stupid because we’ve one over about seven different studies and each one of them says it’s the conversation that distracts you, not holding the phone.”State Senator Joe Simitian, who introduced the bill, said keeping both hands on the wheel was always safer. He expected his law to save hundreds of lives. The Democratic lawmaker was considering introducing a new law to ban text messaging in the ca r, which he said wasn’t an issue when he began working on the first one in 2001.Connecticut, New Jersey and New York have already banned drivers from talking on hand-held cell phones. In New Jersey, police have issued 35,000 tickets for using a hand-held phone or texting while driving since the law went into effect on March 1.But Californians interviewed by Reuters expressed ambivalence.“On the one hand I don’t want to see people crash into each other, but I'm not going to get an ear thing.” 38-year-old bank employee Jason Fischer said in Los Angeles.32. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that______.A. most Californians hate to use an earphone while making a call in the carB. public transportation in California isn’t developed enoughC. in New Jersey few people use a hand-held phoneD.most of Californians are probably against the new law33. According to John Kobylt,_________.A. all the lawmakers are stupidB. holding the phone is safer than using an earphoneC. it isn’t dangerous to make a phone call while drivingD. it is the phone conversation while driving that is really dangerous34. What will State Senator Joe Simitian probably do in the future?A. He will suggest a law to forbid text messaging while rivingB. He will conduct a new survey among CaliforniansC. He will suggest building more roads in CaliforniaD. He will suggest a law to completely ban cell phones while driving.35. The underlined word “ambivalence” in the last paragraph probably refers to__.A. a positive attitudeB. a negative attitudeC. a confused feelingD. an excited feeling第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Unit1 单元综合拓展训练一、阅读理解Cinco de Mayo is probably the holiday most often celebrated that no one understands.Literally(根据字面意思)“Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1861, France sent a big army to invade Mexico, as they wanted to collect some war debts. The French army was much larger, better trained and equipped than the Mexicans struggling to defend (保卫)the road to Mexico City. The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was short-lived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth.Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16,because it was on that day in 1810 that Father Miguel Hidalgo invited his people to take up arms and join him in fighting against Spanish rulers. Independence Day is a much more important holiday in Mexico. For some reason, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States of America, by Mexicans and Americans alike, than it is in Mexico. One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. It was ignored in Mexico after a while but still celebrated in the north of the border, which never got out of the habit of remembering the famous battle. In Puebla and in many American cities with large Mexican populations, there are parades, dancing and festivals. Traditional Mexican food is often served or sold. Mariachi (街头音乐)bands fill town squares, and a lot of beers are served. It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 155 years ago. In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. All over the world, Mexican restaurants bring in mariachi bands and offer specials for what’s almost certain to be a packed house.1. According to the text, people celebrate Cinco de Mayo because_______.A. Mexicans paid off their war debtsB. Mexicans succeeded in defending Mexico CityC. Mexicans gained independence from SpanishD. Mexicans defeated the French army in Puebla2. Why do more Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?A. Because some American areas once belonged to Mexico.B. Because Americans are influenced by Mexican culture.C. Because Mexicans don’t form the habit of having a holiday.D. Because many Mexicans value Independence Day,3. How can schoolchildren celebrate Cinco de Mayo?A. By performing music at restaurants.B. By trying making some Mexican food.C. By turning the classroom into a battlefield.D. By offering special gifts to their teachers.4. By celebrating Cinco de Mayo, people mainly showA. where the history is honored mostB. what special customs they haveC. how Mexicans gained their independenceD. who should be remembered forever二、七选五[2017四川广元中学期中考试]We always make ourselves believe that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, and then another. He always gives me some advice, but I seldom took them seriously. One day he encouraged me to participate a speech competition.
