For example, the average height of a man could possibly have been a unit of measurement. In fact, some of the units used today in English-speaking countries are based on such things as the distance from a man’s elbow to the tip of his middle finger or the weight of a grain of wheat.Because there have been so many differences in weights and measures used in different countries, an international system has been urged. One such system has been used by all countries of the world, it is the metric system. This is a system worked out by a committee of scientists appointed in France in l789. The English-speaking countries are almost the only ones that do not use the metric system in their measures. However it is used in scientific work even in those countries. The metric system is based on a measure of length called the “meter”. This is approximately (近似) one ten-millionth of the distance on the Earth’s surface from pole to equator, which is about 3937 miles. The metric system is based on 10 as is our number system so that each unit of length is 10 times as large as the next smaller unit. There are square and cubic units for measuring area and volume which correspond to the units of length. The unit of weight is the gram, which is the weight of a cubic centimeter of pure water. The liter is a measure used as the quart is used, but it is a little larger. The hectare, which is10, 000 square meters, is used as the acre in Britain, but is 2.471 acres. The metric system is more convenient to use than the English system because its plan is the same as that of our number system. Here are some equivalents for the metric and English systems:one foot equals 0.305 meter; one inch equals 2.540 centimeters; one mile equals 1.609 kilometers; one quart(liquid)equals 0.946 liter.36. Metric system should be used in the world because _______.A. man measured the distance which is based on the distance from a man’s elbow to the tip ofhis middle fingerB. the English-speaking countries used their own measurementC. scientific work needs a unit of measurementD. it is based on the weight of a grain of wheat an informal measure of weight is used today37. Yet, with dark glasses or not, they find themselves suffering from headaches and watering eyes, and even snow blindness, when exposed to several hours of “snow light”.The United States army has now determined that glare from snow does not cause snow blindness in troops in a snow-covered country. Rather, a man’s eyes often find nothing to focus on in a broad space of snow-covered without-grass land. So his gaze continually moves and jumps back and forth over the entire landscape in search of something to look at. Finding something, hour after hour, the eyes never stop searching and the eyeballs become tired and the eye muscles ache. Nature makes up for this discomfort by producing more and more fluid (液体) which covers the eyeball. The fluid covers the eyeball in increasing quantity until it makes eyes difficult to see clearly, and the result is total, even though for a short time, snow blindness.Experiments lead the Army to a simple method of overcoming this problem. Scouts (侦察员) ahead of the troops are trained to shake snow from evergreen bushes, creating a dotted line as they cross completely snow-covered landscape. Even the scouts themselves throw lightweight, dark-colored objects ahead on which they can focus too. The men following can then see something. Their gaze is arrested. Their eyes focus on a bush and having found something to see, stop searching the snow-blanketed landscape. By focusing their attention on one object at a time, the men can cross the snow without becoming hopelessly snow-blind or lost. In this way the problem of crossing a continuous white land is overcome.40. Deserts are becoming hot spots for solar thermal (热的) power in which futuristic troughs (低谷期) pay more attention to the sun's rays and create steam to run power-producing turbines (涡轮机) at power plants.Tiny experimental plants built in the 1980s in California ran into problems when energy prices dropped. But as oil, natural gas and electricity costs soar, companies are racing to build commercial solar thermal plants that are the size of power plants.Limits on emissions (释放) of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels have also promoted the new technology. Utah-based International Automated Systems Inc. signed an agreement to build a $150 million, 100-megawatt power plant for Solar Renewable Energy in Nevada. And North Carolina-based Solargenix will break ground on a 64 MW, $100 million solar thermal plant called Nevada Solar One.Currently, all the types of solar energy provide only about 1 percent of U. S. power. One problem is price. Solar thermal at present costs about 12 to 15 cents per kilowatt hour, Westerholt said, compared with natural gas power which costs 10 cents per KWH. But as production grows, solar companies expect costs to slip to 8 cents per KHW in five years.Solar thermal is expensive compared with wind energy and fuels. But it does have advantages. Power from the desert sun is more reliable than wind power during the day. And unlike fuels, it has no greenhouse gases. And solar thermal is growing globally. A white paper says that by 2040 solar power could satisfy more than 5 percent of the world's electricity demand. The best places for it are Australia, the United States, Spain, the Middle East and North Africa, which could export power from the sun to Europe on high-tech power lines.40. Marla Olmstead, from Binghampton, in New York state, has been painting since just before she was two years old.Using brushes, spatulas, her fingers and even ketchup bottles, she is creating canvases (画布) of six by six foot. The prodigy (神童) has already sold about 25 paintings, raising $ 40,000 and a new exhibition opens this week.Father Mark, speaking to reporters while on a trip to New York city to do television interviews, said, “She does her own thing, she uses a lot of paint but is oblivious (不在意) to the whole thing.” He said she had first started painting shortly before her second birthday as her father tried to stop her distracting him from his own amateur art.“She went at it with all colors. At first she directed me, and then it evolved to the canvas. I’m her assistant, I hand her the brushes. Or have you ever received a telephone call from a retailer asking you whether an item you purchased a month before was meeting your needs? No doubt you noticed these gracious acts.Business firms in this highly competitive decade are quick to institute programs designed to ensure product and service quality. But it's often the ''little things'' that help build a permanent tie between seller and buyer. If you want to make those ''little things'' a high customer service priority, here are a few tips for you to follow.Make a list of the simple, but gracious acts you can perform for your customers. It might include handing out key chains or other small gifts to customers after a purchase, or extending delivery service to elderly customers.Just be sure every item is realistic, economical and easy to carry out.Training in the ''little things'' helps your people learn skills and attitudes. If you want your people to hand out small gifts of your business, be sure they're kept in stock. If you want your people to take extra time with customers, be sure you schedule enough staffing during peak business hours. If you want your people to follow up with customers on the telephone at the end of each month, be sure you drop the sales load a bit at that time.Training in the ''little things'' doesn't end with a single activity. It must become part of everyday life in your business.Emphasize the importance of the ''little things'' by word and deed.Be sure everyone visibly practices the art of customer courtesy each day.Announce the power of the ''little things'' through every possible means. The more cheer leading you do about this topic, the more it will become deeply fixed in the workplace.56. The underlined word ''gracious'' can most likely be replaced by _______.A.surprising B.warmhearted C.interesting D.kind57. If you want your people to accompany customers much longer,_______.A.be sure little things are kept in stockB.be sure enough assistants are available during rush business hoursC.be sure you drop the sales load a bit at that timeD.be sure to let them follow up with you58. The main idea of this passage is ________A.how to train the employees in the business firmB.the importance of ''little things'' in today's businessC.the necessity of giving away little thingsD.praising employees who show courtesy to customersBApparently, we are safe neither at home nor in the business office. We use water in both places, but the research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. They are released from water by daily actions like water running out of tap, spraying from garden pipes, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is moving, these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health.Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of coal, cooking oil, or even candles release carbon monoxide and particulates such as cigarette ashes which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near heavy traffic. New tugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell〞, which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly applied paint, newly purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (通风), these chemicals can build up to become health problems. Their poisonous effects are only now being slowly recognized. These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise warning. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well while in the garage. We need further research to understand better other potential health dangers, too. For example, the effects of overcrowding of schools (carbon dioxide build-up ), the factory work environment ( an endless list of potentially dangerous substances), and even home heating and cooling (the air conditioner may be our enemies, not our friends) have only recently started to come to light. Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home.〞59. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. The air we breathe in is harmful.B. Chemicals are released in the running water.C. Chemicals are added to the drinking water.D. The water in everyday use is unsafe.60. In Paragraph 2, the underlined sentence means that ___________________________.A. homes and offices should be aired oftenB. any pollution should be taken into considerationC. bathing should be done with cautionD. we should prevent any pollution from doing harm to us61. What is the purpose of the passage?A. To call on us to guard our water.B. To show us that no place is like home.C. To make us aware of the pollution around us.D. To argue that neither homes nor offices are safe.CTOKYO --- The number of domestic infections cases of influenza A/H1N1 in Japan hits 42 on Sunday after a total of 34 people in Osaka and Hyogo counties were confirmed to have been infected, local media reported. The total number of the infection in the country now stands at 46, including the first four cases contracted abroad. Now a new study dispels a common belief about why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out〔不及格〕.Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy, and perhaps not too bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who’d quit school about why they left.“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.〞 John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic〔美籍西班牙的〕students will receive a diploma, and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So, if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit, what does? Again, John Bridgeland: "The most dependable finding was that they were bored.〞“They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.〞The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US, only one state, New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions. Another researcher says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.“As these dropouts look back, they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out and stick it through to the end, is probably helpful measure.〞New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its school attendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point-the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant. And to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.67. Most high school students drop out of school because__.A. they have failing gradesB. they take no interest in classesC. they are discriminated againstD. they are lazy and not intelligent68. According to the passage, which state has a law requiring school attendance untilthey graduate?A. New Hampshire.B. Utah.C. New Mexico.D. The District of Columbia.69. The underlined words “stick it out〞 probably means “___________〞.A plete schooling B.solve the problem C.love having classes D.believe inthemselves70. In the last paragraph, the writer is trying to____________.A. analyze the reason why students quit schoolB. suggest raising the compulsory attendance ageC. raise awareness of reforming high school educationD. wish to make laws to guarantee no educationII卷〔共35分〕第一节任务型阅读〔共10小题,总分值5分〕The latest scientific studies show that the sun and the oceans have far more important influences on the world's climate than human activity. The head of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), Professor Fred Singer, put forward a suggestion to the UN-sponsored IPCC. He said, “We donated our time and best efforts to produce this report out of concern that the IPCC gave us an incorrect reason for global-warming based on incomplete and faulty science.〞“Global-warming news has led to the demand for unrealistic efficiency standards for cars, the construction of uneconomic wind and solar energy stations, the establishment of large production facilities for uneconomic fuels such as ethanol(乙醇) from corn, requirements that electric companies buy expensive power from so-called‘renewable’energy sources, and plans to reduce, at considerable expense, carbon dioxide from power plants.“While it is absolutely nothing wrong to increase energy efficiency, they cannot be regarded as a realistic means to control climate. In addition, policies have been developed that try to hide the huge cost of greenhouse gas controls.“Seeing science clearly misused to shape public policies that have the potential to cause serious economic harm, particularly on low-income groups, we choose to speak up for science at a time when too few people outside the scientific community know what is happening, and too few scientists who know the truth have to speak out against the IPCC.〞NIPCC is what its name suggests: an international organization of non-governmental scientists and scholars who have come together to understand the causes and consequences of climate change.“Because we don't believe climate change is caused by human greenhouse gas, we are able to look at evidence the IPCC ignores. Because we do not work for any governments, we can make our research more scientific and fairer.〞第二节单词拼写(共10小题,总分值5分)1. The event did not live up to e___________________________.2. Rather than push through up again and rejoin the path on the far side of the bushes. As I climbed down into the valley a bird flew off h rock on which I had put my hand. On looking at the spot from which the bird had risen, I saw two eggs. They were the kind that I did not have in my collection, so I placed them carefully in my bag, wrapped in a little dry grass. As we went further down the valley the sides became steeper and not far from where I had entered. It came to drop of about twelve to fourteen feet. The water that rushed down all these small valleys in the rainy season had worn the rock as glass. As it was too deep to climb down, I handed my gun to one of the men and slid down it. My feet had hardly touched the sandy bottom when the two men jumped down, one on each side of me. They quickly gave me the gun and asked me if I had heard the tiger. In fact, I had heard nothing; possibly because of the noise I made sliding down the rock. The men said they had heard a tiger growling somewhere nearby, but they did not know from which direction the noise had come.36. The vehicle maker notes the special paint adds about $100 US to the price of a car.It plans to use its new chemical mixture only on its X-Trail SUVs in Japan for now, as it looks for a more widespread presentation.
