Chapter 4 Kat’s Farewell Party---After you.---Thank you.---You know. I just realize that I’m gonna miss you guys so much.---aww.---Everyone has been so nice since I turned in my two weeks notice. Actually, when is that new temp coming in?---What? How can you replace me that fast? I had no idea I was that disposable.---You are the one who is deserting us for bigger and better things. Speaking of which…---Well, yes and no. I don’t really know what to wear. I ‘m really worried about the dress code. Should I go with casual, business casual or formal.---Em, that’s a tough call. Every office has s different dress code. If I were you, I will probably go with business casual.---Yea.---You can put your belongings in here.---Thanks. Looks like I’m going to have to go shopping. Very painful, very painful. But really, I actually really do need to upgrade my wardrobe. You would not believe some of the things I have in my closet.---Wanna come with?---I really really…do, but…---I’m sorry, 100 dollars. How do you only have 100 dollars?---Well, I mean, with taxes, rent and student loans, things are really tight these days. ---Oh, honey, you know I’ve never been able to say no to your sad face. How about you coming by my new office next week and I will treat you to lunch.Chapter 10 The Lady---What’s up, Sasha?---Come in.---Okay.---I have very good news for you.---Really? What is it?---Oh my gosh! She’s my all time idol! Oh Gosh! Where is Mike? Mike come here! ---All right. Now you have half-strand me. Would you please tell me what we are doing here?---Okay Okay Okay. Are you ready? Are you ready for this?---Oh,yes. I’m all ears.---Okay, so my idol, my role model. And my all-time hero Aung San Sun Kyi. She’s coming to the building right now. And she can be arriving at any moment. Isn’t this exciting?---Wo wo wo Wait a second. Aung San Sun Kyi, as in Noble Laureate.---Exactly!---Wow.---I’m so stoked to finally meet her. I’ve been following her in the news for a long time.---I mean she’s totally a household name in Burma.---Yeah. I can’t even imagine going through some of the things that she has experienced.---That’s definitely true.---Like how hard would that kind of decision be?---That would be totally catch-22 either she leaves Burma but probably won’t be able to return or her husband has to die alone and never goes to see his wife again.---I know, that’s why I admire her I mean, when she leaves political life. Someone has some really big shoes to fill.---Totally agree with that. You know for once and only once we see eye to eye on something.---That’s true. Wow, she is coming.---Dibs.---You can shake mine, because I shake hers.---seriously?Chapter 28 The Ex’s Plant---Oh, Mike. Why are you being so nice? What did you do wrong?---I have done nothing wrong. Today’s Yang Lin’s first day back from China. I’m so glad that she has come back. Because trying to get her work done and my work done has been killed me. Oh, crap!---What?---I forgot to water Yang Lin’s plant! She asked me to take care of it. While she was gone. Oh, I’m dead. Just a bunch of green leaves. Not a big deal, right? Wrong! That plant was given to Yang Lin by her ex who she clearly is not over yet.---You take care.---You’re sick, Xiaobei! That plant is all that’s left of their relationship and I killed it. I’m not gonna get off the hook this time.---Oh come on, come back to life.---What’s up? I just got back!---How’s everything?---Coffee. Come on, please.---Hey, Mike!---Hey! Good to see you! You are home.---Thanks for minding the store while I was away. In order to show my appreciation I got you a gift.---Thank you so much! This is really cool.---Yeah, I know you ‘ll like it. I remember you always want one of those, right?---Thank you so much for your remembering.---Of course. That’s just part of being good friends.---Yeah, being…---So, how’s life?---It’s good. Life is good. So, how was your trip?---Oh, my gosh. Too short. I need to warn you I’m a little bit depressed now since I’m an ocean away from my family again. Be aware, the smallest thing could tick me off. ---Oh, just kidding. Lighten up! I just need sometime to adjust. That’s all.---Post trip syndrome. I totally, totally get that. But you know, now it’s time to get back into work mode.---Speaking of which, the first thing on my to-do list is to pick a bone with my neighbor. I told her to get my mail for me but when I got back my mailbox was flooded! I hate it when people don’t follow through on their promises.---Yeah, that really stinks. What are you gonna say to her when you see her next?---I’m not gonna speak to her again. I’m just gonna leave a note telling her I’m not gonna talk to her ever again.---Sure, I mean it was irresponsible, untrustworthy, really insensitive of her, and she probably doesn’t deserve your gift. I mean, your thanks, but…don’t you think she deserves, you know, a second chance? I’m sure she has done all kinds of wonderful things for you. Oh, come on, doesn’t she deserve…you know?---Why are you so concerned? Why do you care? You don’t even know her. And bythe way, don’t you need to go back to your desk? We can catch up over lunch.---OK, Yang Lin, I have something to show you. That could potentially make you very angry. So if you could just remain calm, keep breathing and not kill me before I have time to explain.---Oh my gosh is that…? That’s my plant.---Look, |I did water it. I even put it in the window everyday, so it is can get sunlight. I have no idea why it died? Maybe it was the radiation from your computer that killed it? OK, I lied. I didn’t take care of it. I totally forgot. Your words went one ear and our the other. I know what this plant meant to you. I’m so sorry. I’ll do whatever it takes to make it up to you. Whatever it takes.---That feels good.---What are you doing?---Just some house cleaning. I should be doing a long time ago.---Isn’t it from the ex-boyfriend. You’ve never gotten over.---If I have learned anything during this trip. It’s that there are plenty of fish in the sea. I’m ready to let go. Seriously, what took me so long, right?---So, you are not gonna kill me.---Nuh-uh.---So we are still friends?---Of course.---Well, I don’t mean to pry. But…,who gave you the statue?Chapter 29 Missing Home---Yang Lin, wake up!---Were you seriously ordering Chinese food?---Oh my gosh. I just had the best dream ever. I was in Beijing and my parents had taken me to my favorite hotpot restaurant and my mom was telling me that I was too skinny and I need to eat up!---And that is how we know it was a dream.---And just when they were going to bring out the shrimp---I woke up…to you---Life is so unfair! I really miss my parents---Well, I’m sure they miss you too. With you gone---They are the most loving parents in the whole world---They never rally buy expensive stuff. They saved up and sent me to college and to the U.S. Even now that I’m self-sufficient when I go back home. They still gave me a fat wad of cash and went.---My parents are the exact same way. They invested so much into giving me opportunities so I can have a happy and successful future---That’s true. But sometimes they are a little bit too much and then they turn into the overprotective types---English please---Honey, you need to bundle up. It’s freezing outside. Look at your dad, this is theway to go. I hate to see you get sick---Right .besides, don’t you think your skirt is a little too short?---Too short, too short---You are just asking for trouble going out like that---You know how many perverts are out there?---Exactly, listen to your dad---It’s not just the way I dress. It is EVERYTHING. My hairstyle, my makeup, even my text messages. They want to comment on all of them. I love my parents, but they just want to control everything. It is suffocating!---I know. It’s like parents can’t bring themselves to accept the fact that you are an adult!---Do you believe that even now I have a curfew? If I’m not home by 10pm. My dad would text me every 5 minutes to check---Ok, I’m sorry I know I shouldn’t laugh but that’s crazy---And of course they both nag me … my mom’s worst nightmare is that I would be a leftover lady!---Honey, you should start dating. See this cute boy? Remember? Uncle Zhang’s son! He used to be your playmate! Mom has set up a date for you tomorrow afternoon. Go have fun!---Don’t listen to your mom. You can’t date this guy. Because you two are living in two different countries. Here, I’ve got an email address for you. Remember the dating show? And you said you liked guy No.1 because he’s studying in the U.S.? haha, I wrote an email for you. You just copy and paste and send it to him---Don’t listen to your dad. You should see him.---My mom told me I need to bring home a boy in a year---I could pretend to be your boyfriend for a small free---Keep dreaming. My parents forbid me from dating a foreigner---Oh my mom---Hello, hello!---Hey mom---You don’t need to say hello on wechat. Just speak up.---OK,OK. Hi sweetheart. How are you? Mom misses you.---My little pumpkin. Daddy bought you a new dresser. It’s much bigger than the old one. So you can buy more clothes---Exactly .And do you have enough money? Are you buying enough things to eat? You are already too skinny. Don’t starve yourself, OK?---Hey mom, are you OK?---I’m OK, honey. It’s just a little cold. I’ll get over it. Getting sick more often is just part of getting old.---OK, hmm…my little pumpkin. We are having dinner now. your mom made some of your favorite dishes. Daddy will eat them all up just for you, OK? Bye Bye!---Bye bye! Eat more, bye bye!---Hmm, bye bye!---Hey Mom, everything is fine, I just wanted to call and say…I miss you, and youknow I might be coming home this weekend just for a visit. OK, love you too, momChapter 48 New Name---What about Emily?---It’s totally a girl next door’s name.---Emily stole my boyfriend.---I hate that name.---I have one. Heather.---Heather is my cat’s name.---She’s always in heat.---What about Polin?---No, that is not an entertainment show host name.---Sara is too plain.---You want something with spice in it.---Chatrise.---Lemonjello.---No.---What about Diana?---She’s dead.---No.---Yeah, she’s dead.---There’s only one Diana dude.---You know she lived her life…---Ok, that’s it. We need some new ideas.---Kevin, you wanted to see me?---Thank god you are here.---Please, pull up a chair.---We need to pick your brain.---My brain?---So, they wanted me to host a new show called U.S. Entertainment Today.---What? That’s great news.---But in order to get the position. I need a new English name.---And we’ve been at this for 4 HOURS.---Just… pick a name!---Faith, Destiny, Candy, Sugar…---We’ve been through all that. Why don’t you just pick…Miranda! That’s pretty Hmm… that’s a nice name!---No…Yang Lin looks nothing like a Miranda. Mirandas have long blond hair. They wear jeans and boots all the time. Live out in the country and work on a farm---Don’t mess with Texas. Yeehaw!---Kewin, you got to stop watching westerns.---Mirandas are like…---It’s like a professional salsa dancer’s name.---Mirandas are totally into the latest fashion.---They have fiery personalities.---What are YOU looking at?---My sister is the stereotypical Miranda.---Oh wait---So people associate names with certain physical and personality traits?---Yeah, I think Christine would fit you really perfectly---That’s a nice name---Christine is the complete opposite of Yang Lin---A Christine is someone who has lots and lots of ambition. Is always professional but also has a punk rocker side---Yeah, I have to agree Christine is a bad fit. They are kind of …hmm... control freaks---Ugh… that’s not me---Highstrung---Yeah---I still think Jody is the best name that we’ve come up with---Nah…do you remember that intern?---Classic Jody. She was tall and delicate blazing her own trail. not comforming to society---See they just can’t see eye to eye---We are helpless---Ok, I think maybe we just needed a new strategy here---Here, follow me---Let’s try this instead---We will all write down the names that we liked the most, ok?---And Yang Lin will just pick one at random---Yes!---No no no… what if I don’t like the name?---We’ve spent way too much time on this already---You guys have to promise you write good names---No… that’s old!---You know Kevin, what we should do is we should blindfold Yang Lin---And spin her around a couple of times---That’s such a good idea---What is this name?---Yang Lin, come here---I need to see this---One-a-spin-a two-a-spin-a three-a-spin-a---Now do it---That’s … yeah---It’s … it’s not…---Sunshine---Or sunset!---Are you guys serious?---It has a nice ring to it ---It gives you a visual ---That fits you perfectly ---Look at the time---Yeah I got a thing---Seriously?---Holy crap。

In this article, we will delve into the disparities between American English and British English while exploring the historical and cultural factors that shaped these differences.Historical BackgroundThe roots of American and British English can be traced back to the British colonization of North America in the 17th century. At that time, English settlers brought their language to the NewWorld, which eventually evolved into what we now know as American English. Meanwhile, in Britain, English underwent its own transformation, influenced by factors such as the Medieval Norman Invasion and the Great Vowel Shift. These linguistic events led to the development of modern British English.Spelling DifferencesOne of the most noticeable distinctions between American English and British English is in spelling. Certain words are spelled differently, such as "color" (American) vs. "colour" (British), "center" (American) vs. "centre" (British), and "organize" (American) vs. "organise" (British). These discrepancies can be attributed to the efforts of reformers like Noah Webster in the early 19th century, who aimed to simplify and standardize the American variant.Vocabulary VariationsApart from spelling, vocabulary divergence plays a significant rolein distinguishing American and British English. This variation is often the result of cultural, historical, and practical influences. For instance, the British use "lorry" for what Americans refer to as "truck," "biscuit" instead of "cookie," and "lift" instead of "elevator." The term "apartment" is used in America, while the British prefer "flat." These differences reflect the unique cultural contexts of each nation over time.Pronunciation DistinctionsPronunciation is another vital component that sets American and British English apart. Differences are observed in the pronunciation of certain vowels and consonants. For example, the /r/ sound is pronounced more prominently in American English than in British English. The accent patterns and intonations also differ, with American English featuring a more rhotic sound. Phonological variations can be attributed to the geographic expansion of English-speaking settlers across the vast areas of North America, leading to linguistic isolation and regional dialect formation.Grammar DissimilaritiesAlthough American and British English share the same grammatical foundation, a few variances can still be identified. One significant difference lies in the use of verb forms. For instance, while British English prefers the past tense "learned," American English favors "learnt." Additionally, the present perfect tense is used more frequently in British English compared to American English. These differences mainly stem from the transformation of language over time and the influence of various regional dialects.Cultural ImpactThe cultural divide between America and Britain has played a crucial role in shaping the linguistic differences between American English and British English. Historical events, geographical separation, social interactions, and exposure to different languages and cultures have shaped the unique characteristics of these language variations. While the English language remains acommon thread, the divergence highlights the individual identities and cultural nuances of each nation.ConclusionAmerican English and British English exhibit significant disparities in spelling, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. These differences are rooted in historical events, cultural influences, and geographical isolation. Understanding the distinctions between American English and British English can enhance cross-cultural communication and contribute to a deeper appreciation of the diversity within the English language. Regardless of these distinctions, both variations of the language are celebrated for their rich histories and global influence.。

In order to meet the demands of the 21st century, an effective and practical English oral communication course is essential. This article will explore the key components and strategies of a modern and practical English oral communication course.1. IntroductionIn the introduction section of the course, students should be provided with an overview of the importance of English oral communication skills in the current society. This can include discussions on the advantages of being proficient in English, such as enhanced career opportunities, improved intercultural communication, and broader access to information and knowledge.2. Communication StrategiesThe course should focus on equipping students with various communication strategies that will enable them to effectively express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions in English. These strategies can include active listening, asking for clarification, using body language and facial expressions, and adapting speech to different contexts. By practicing these strategies, students will develop the necessary skills to navigate real-life English conversations.3. Practical Vocabulary and ExpressionsAn essential aspect of any English oral communication course is the acquisition of practical vocabulary and expressions. Students should learn commonly used English phrases, idioms, and colloquial speech that will greatly enhance their ability to communicate with native English speakers. This can be achieved through exercises, role-plays, and discussions that incorporate everyday scenarios.4. Pronunciation and IntonationClear and accurate pronunciation is crucial for effective oral communication. This can be achieved through extensive practice in correct pronunciation, emphasis on stress and intonation patterns, and the use of audio and video materials for modeling and imitation.5. Authentic MaterialsTo expose students to real-life English conversations, the course should incorporate authentic materials such as videos, podcasts, interviews, and dialogues. 黑人英语会话通野为范

黑人英语会话通野为范Black English Vernacular, also known as African American Vernacular English (AAVE), is a distinct dialect of the English language that has been developed and used by African Americans for centuries. This dialect has its own unique grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, which sets it apart from Standard American English. Despite the widespread perception that AAVE is a "substandard" or "incorrect" form of English, it is a legitimate and valuable language variety that deserves recognition and respect. The origins of AAVE can be traced back to the transatlantic slave trade, when enslaved Africans were brought to the United States and forced to adapt to the English language. As they learned English, they incorporated elements of their native languages and developed a distinct way of speaking that reflected their cultural and social experiences. Over time, this dialect evolved and became a central part of African American identity and culture. One of the most distinctive features of AAVE is its grammar. AAVE often uses the verb "be" differently than Standard English, such as inthe phrase "She be working late." This usage of "be" is not a mistake, but rather a grammatical construct that expresses a habitual or ongoing action. Similarly, AAVE may use the pronoun "they" to refer to a singular subject, as in "They house is nice." These grammatical differences are not signs of linguistic inferiority, but rather evidence of the richness and complexity of AAVE.AAVE also has its own unique vocabulary, which often reflects the cultural experiences and perspectives of African Americans. For example, the word "ain't" is a common feature of AAVE, and is used to negate a verb or adjective. The word "finna," which is derived from the phrase "fixing to," is used to indicate an immediate future action. These words and phrases are not simply slang or incorrect usage, but rather integral parts of the AAVE dialect. Moreover, AAVE has its own distinctive pronunciation patterns, such as the dropping of the "g" at the end of words (e.g., "walkin'"), the use of the "th" sound as "f" or "v" (e.g., "bafroom"), and the use of "ax" instead of "ask." These pronunciation patterns are not signs of linguistic deficiency, but rather reflect the unique cultural and historical experiences of African Americans.Despite the richness and complexity of AAVE, it has often been stigmatized and dismissed as a "substandard" or "incorrect" form of English. This attitude is rooted in a long history of linguisticdiscrimination and racism, which has perpetuated the myth that AAVE is a "broken" or "inferior" language. This myth has had far-reaching consequences, as it has contributed to the marginalization and oppression of African Americans, both in educational and social settings. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the legitimacy and value of AAVE. Linguists and scholars have increasingly acknowledged the structural coherence and grammatical complexity of AAVE, and have argued that it should be treated as a valid and valuable language variety, rather than a deviation from Standard English. This recognition has led to a greater appreciation for the cultural and linguistic diversity of African Americans, and has challenged the long-held assumption that AAVE is a "substandard" form of English.Furthermore, the use of AAVE has become increasingly prevalent in popular culture, particularly in music, literature, and film. Many African American artists and writers have embraced AAVE as a means of expressing their cultural identity and experiences, and have used it to challenge dominant narratives and power structures. This has contributed to the growing acceptance and legitimacy of AAVE as a valuable and influential language variety. In conclusion, Black English Vernacular is a legitimate and valuablelanguage variety that deserves recognition and respect. It is a rich and complex dialect that reflects the unique cultural and historical experiences of African Americans, and has played a significant role in shaping the language and culture of the United States. By acknowledging the value and legitimacy of AAVE, we can challenge the long-held myths of linguistic inferiority and discrimination, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.。
