Dear editor(编辑),
I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city. There are so many colorful peacocks(孔雀)here.
The peacocks mostly live on the grass land of Dongfeng Square(广场). They are given food freely by visitors. They usually throw food to them, and don't think about at all whether the food is right or not Some of the peacocks became ill , some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.
I'm sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds, but don't realize(意识到)that they may be doing them harm(伤害).
The visitors should be told that what they have done is very harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening.
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it's our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully.
Yours,
Sun Yan

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a
balance exists between all forms of life . No living thing can exist by itself. It is a part of a system (体系) in which all forms of life are joined together . If we change one part of the nature order, this will in its turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part .
The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the wide spread poisoning animals and birds . The throwing of waste products into the ocean does harm to life in the sea , while waste gases change the chemical balance of the atmosphere .
And so we could go on , adding more examples , until in despair (绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities . Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs , but not so clever at looking far ahead , or thinking about what the future of his action might be .

To find out whether bees can see colours, the following experiment is made. A table is put in a garden, and on the table is a blue card with some sugar on it. As soon as one bee finds the sugar, many more come to it one after another in a short time. It seems that one bee is able to tell the news of food to the other bees in their “home”. After a moment, the blue card with sugar on it is taken away. Instead of this card, another blue card is now put on the left side of the first feeding place and a red to its right. Nothing can be seen on the two cards. Very soon bees arrive again, and fly towards the blue card. No bees go to the red card.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on the roads and streets and millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans workers at putting together the parts of the cars, driving trucks, building roads, or filling with gas, Americans won’t live without cars! Most Americans would find it hard to think what life could look like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of the air pollution caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.
One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do, but to build a clean car is easier said than done.
Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.
To prevent the world from being polluted by car, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and to go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily—a large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment( 失业).
Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.
( )41. How many Americans have something to do with cars?
A. twenty per cent of Americans
B. less than ten per cent of Americans
C. first sixth of Americans
D. one sixth of the whole population of America
( )42. What are Americans worried about ? They are worried about 。

A. the number of cars is increasing every year.
B. Americans can’t live without cars.
C. The air pollution caused by cars.
D. What life will look like without cars.
( )43. How many ways of making the air clear are suggested in this passage?
A. One
B. Two
C. Three
D. Four
( ) 44. Which of the following is wrong according to the passage?
A. The large factories are trying to make a car that doesn’t cause pollution.
B. Great progress has been made in making the air clean.
C. It’s very difficult to get rid of air pollution.
D. Americans are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle.
( )45. What conclusion does the write make in the passage?
A. Although cars make Americans live a better life, they cause serious problem of the air pollution .
B. Cars are important and necessary to Americans.
C. In order to get rid of the air pollution Americans should go to work by bicycle.
D. Many makers are sure to make a car that pleases Americans.

Pollution
The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modem traffic and modern communication means (通讯设备). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution (污染). To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, Man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is
now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules (法规) to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal (煤) in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air.
Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused (引起) by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in population at the same time.
( )61. Our world is becoming much smaller ___.
A. because the earth is being polluted day and night.
B. thanks to science development
C. because of the rise in population
( )62. Thousands of years ago, life was ____ it is today.
A. much easier than
B. as easy as
C. much harder than
( )63. Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here "it" means ____.
A. water pollution
B. air pollution
C. noise pollution
( )64. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because ____.
A. it's bad for all living things in the world
B. it makes much noise
C. it makes us angry more easily
( )65. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world's population does.
B. If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2.
C. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.

The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70% of the earth’s surface (表面) is covered with water. But about 97% of that is sea water,or salt water. Man can only use the other 3%---the fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources(源泉). And we can not even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been made dirty.
However, as things stand today, this fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly---- almost day by day. We should take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world---wide water shortage(缺乏) later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting(浪费) our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop (开发) ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道). From there it returns to sea or runs into underground places. But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to remove the salt. If we take these we will be in no danger of drying up.

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. The first important way is that they provide man with food, wood and other products. Trees provide not only with food but also many animals with food. Without trees many animals could not live on the earth. It’s not easy for man to live on the earth, either.
The second important way is that trees give us shade. On a hot summer day, people are eager to have a rest under the shade of a tree after they have walked a long way. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and to animals.
The third important way is that trees help to prevent drought(干旱) and floods. However, in many parts of the world, man has not realized the third important way. He has cut trees down in large numbers. In the end he finds that he has lost the best friends he had.

Bamboo is one of nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.
Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist reported one bamboo plant which grew 1.5 metres(4 feet) in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except in Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo.
Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeter wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters(1 foot) across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to green to black.
Bamboo has been used to make things such as hats and kitchen tools. Because it is strong, bamboo is also used to build buildings.
Many Asia countries have used bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for buildings and supporting new buildings and bridges while they are being built.
In Africa, poor farmers are taught how to find water using bamboo. These African countries need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and water. Bamboo pipes(管子) help poor farmers bring water to their thirsty fields without spending a lot of money.

Many of the world’s pollution problems have been 1 by the crowding of large groups of people into cities. Supply for the 2 of the people leads to 3 pollution by industry. If the 4 increase in human population 5 at the present rate (比率), there may be much greater harm. Some scientists speak of the 6 in number of people as “population pollution.”
About 2000 years ago, the world 7 was probably about 250 million. 8 reached a billion in 1850. By1930 the population was two billion. It is 9 three and a half billion. 6.
Forests have always been useful and important to man who makes use of them in many ways. Every day trees serve man everywhere. Trees supply man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats, bridges and so on. Furniture, such as desks, chairs and beds, is made of wood. Trees can stop man from terrible heat. They are also useful in stopping good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains.
If there were no trees, heavy rains would wash away the rich surface soil that is so important to plants. The result is that the land will become a desert. There are plenty of desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas used to be very rich areas, but man in the past had not enough knowledge about science of nature, and cut down too many trees in the area where they lived and never planted new ones. Soon the rich surface soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the rich land changed into useless deserts where nothing could grow.
