High school biology teacher Kelly Chavis knew smartphones were a problem in her class. But not even the students realized how much of a problem the devices were until Chavis did an inclass experiment.
For one class period, students used a whiteboard to count every Snapchat, Instagram, text, call that appeared on their phones.Chavis is among a growing number of teachers, parents and health experts who believe that smartphones are now partly to blame for increasing the levels of student anxiety.“One girl, just during the one hour, got close to 150 Snapchat notifications.150!” she said.
Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University in California, said it is not a coincidence that youth mental health issues have risen with the number of phones.“This use of phones has led to a loss of sleep and facetoface interactions necessary for their growth,” she said.
Researchers are still not sure whether phones cause student depression or depression causes phone use.But nearly 60 percent of parents said they worry about the influence of social media on their child's physical and mental health.
Both schools and parents are starting to take steps to deal with the problem. Many public schools pay outside companies to watch students' social media activity for signs of anxiety.Other schools invite in yoga teachers and comfort dogs to help calm students.

Young sunflowers turn and swing every day.New findings add to evidence that the plants are animallike.
Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun.He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way.The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day, or on the other side at night.A plant growthregulating hormone, called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures (成熟) and its flowers open up.At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flowers.” Hanner said, adding that the bees are cold blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said “We're currently testing this idea.”

It is National Sleep Awareness Week and reflecting on the importance of this basic act is timely. As a preventive cardiologist(心脏病医生), I work with
patients who want to improve their health and lengthen their lives. Many of them have major risk factors for heart disease;others already have heart disease or have experienced a heart attack.
Traditionally, patients who want to improve their heart health have received four main suggestions from their doctors: eat a healthy diet, get more exercise, quit smoking, and enjoy proper amounts of alcohol.Plenty of research backs up these four pieces of advice: Large studies have found that making improvements in these four areas lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 67 percent.
But lately, researchers are starting to recognize that there should be five recommendations on that list, not just four. They are discovering that getting enough sleep is a powerful health protector as well. When researchers include enough sleep in their studies as a fifth cardiopreventive behavior change, they find that it lowers the chance of dying of heart disease even more: adding a good seven hours of sleep a night in addition to making positive changes in diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol intake lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 83 percent.
When that news started coming out, doctors began tagging sleep onto their list of recommended health behavior changes. But I don't think sleep belongs at the bottom of the list.I think it should be at the top! I believe that getting enough sleep—at least seven to eight hours per night for most people—is the most important health behavior change you can make to improve the health of your heart and your overall health.
Sure, I'd prefer that everyone make all of the big five lifestyle changes, but if I could only choose one, I'd pick sleep because when you are wellrested, you have more power to make the right choices about what you eat and drink, and you have more energy to exercise and you have the resilience you need to kick bad habits such as smoking and overeating. But when you're exhausted, everything in life is more difficult.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall.I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me.She replied, still all smiles, “I'm sorry sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nicelooking teenage boy coming toward me.Remembering my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me.It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me.Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front.I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face.I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

Paragraph 1:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids. I thought that a beautiful woman with charming blue eyes must be willing to help me.So, with great expectation, I trotted briskly towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested courteously if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me.However, what I saw was a woman's face disfigured by frowns and what I heard was a sound of dismay and suspicion under her breath.Without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer.I stood there, motionless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
Paragraph 2:
Finally a man wearing a cheap Tshirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me.I squeezed a smile though it failed to mask my weariness, and requested him the same thing.Unexpectedly, he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation or any probing questions.Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to seek for so long. From that day on, I began helping other strangers in distress, just like the poorlooking but kind man, with the aim of passing kindness and melting the ice in many people's hearts.。
